Ash looks about the library, annoyed and unaffected by what is going on, but clearly not understanding it. She turns to Merai and says loudly, “we’ll this just seems like it’s going to get sticky quickly,” her eyes darting to the excess eating and ears focusing on the loud love priestess. “Ugh, VERY sticky,” she corrected, annoyed plumes of smoke exiting her nostrils like an old man smoking his pipe.
Ash went to take Petal to the stables to brush her, feed her and say goodbye one last time. She was hoping by the time she got back things would be back to normal.
Merai is disturbed by all the odd behavior. She attends the canticle in hopes to talk to the Dean or cadderly about it. She also wants to ask cadderly about Danica.
pox thinks it’s great that people are acting a little less uptight. He thinks about getting back to the restricted sections of the library while maybe people were distracted, but then decides not to. He just explores around the library and tries to find out anything about what might have caused all this chaos..
The midday Canticle starts in the Great Hall. Those of the party who are in attendance note that there are about half of the normal attendees. Dean Tobius arrives from a side door with Newander and The Prince in tow, presumably after their meeting which must have been more of a quick exchange in the side hall rather than a formal engagement. The three hide try their best to hide their grim visages once in public view.
Brother Chaunticleer begins the midday canticle - the song prayer to the allied gods of the library. His falsetto echos across the great Hall and the Divine harmonies lift the spirits of those in attendance - Little Iron and Merai feel a warm calmness during this ritual to their deities. In this place of Knowledge, this institution and temple combined to two of of the Greater Deities make the troubles from the road seem far off.
Suddenly Brother Chaunticleer skips a few syllables, he sputters and fumbles over the words. Panic crosses his features, he smacks his forehead while shaking his head violently. He begins cursing, tears fall down his face.
"Damn it - the words - I've forgotten the words"
Gasps from the crowds and hushed murmurs fill the hall. In this History of the library - nearly 600 years, the midday canticle had been sung to near perfection - Brother Chancheeor himself doing it for the lat 20 years.
"I never wanted to be a priest" he bellows and runs through the crowd out the entrance doors to the library.
Dead silence fills the hall.
The Dean magically enhances his voice - it echos with the power of a thunderstorm.
"Disperse at once."
There is a Divine magical power laid onto the command and the hall quickly empties. He locks eyes with the party who were not compelled to leave - the Dean, Prince, Newander and party all frown at the party in the now empty Great Hall.
I am glad you brought your charges - but where is Miss Danica and Cadderly?
A look of horror passes on Merai’s face on hearing their companions were not at the library. “Danica was poisoned, Cadderly left us to return straight to the library because we had no means of treating her. But that was days ago. We need to find them- but I’m afraid that is not the most urgent crisis we face.
Dean Tobias- pardon my boldness in speaking to you this way, but we are under attack. Agents or followers of the goddess Talona appear to be actively looking to attack the library. We must figure out what we can do. And this odd behavior- many behaving strangely- This must be part of the attack. We need to secure the library and gather those who can still think clearly to cure this ailment and prepare for an assault or further action!”
"Yes the Prince has informed me as such. I will bolster our defenses - the library has never fallen in the 600 years it's stood, I shall not allow it to under my watch. I would prefer not to cause a panic though. My image is eve---"
The Dean shakes his head - alarmed at the wild tangent he was about to go on.
The Dean composes himself then casts a spell - Locate Creature.
His face is perplexed for a moment.
"Why it appears Miss Danica and Cadderally are in the dormitory wing - I assume in one of their chambers. I was unaware of their return. Could you please go check on them while I summon the senior priests to work on a defense strategy."
You knock on the door to Cadderly's chambers. It opens as it was not fully closed.
Cadderally is sitting crosslegged on the floor atop heaps of parchments. He in working with a partial alchemy set and filling hollow chambers in crossbow bolts with a liquid from a flask. A partially filled bandoleer of the finished bolts is laid on his bed.
More shockingly Miss Danica is laid unconscious over a large slab of granite that had been put into the room. Her head and the granite is caked with blood - large splits run down her forehead. A scroll of the Monk Master Miss Danica has been studying at the library is likewise caked with blood, but you can see the words Iron Skulltechnique.
Cadderally looks up at the party from his work.
"Why Hello there Merai and Pox, oh and various strangers!"
He looks at the rest of the party - a bit perplexed.
"Have we met before? You seem awfully familiar."
His face scrunches up as he attempts to grasp at the details. His eyes glaze over and he turns back to his work, fully engrossed and paying the group no attention.
Now overwhelmed with a sense to pursue a hunt, Pendergast becomes antsy, his attitude bordering on aggressive. After hearing his services would still be appreciated by Merai, the most he could muster in his state was a smile and nod. As everyone went about their business, the hunter paced through the courtyards and the halls; he knew he had no place in this lavish library, but he was here on invitation and goodwill which was the only reason he remained. Whilst he made his anxious rounds, he sipped on his wine fervently, hoping that it would take away whatever edge was there.
Some time passed and Pendergast's state continued, he'd just run out of wine when Merai gathered everyone together. The scene that unfolded in the room they entered was just enough to trigger some of the aggression stewing inside the surly hunter, he storms over to Cadderly and spits, "I don't know what madness has possessed you and all the folk here, but you need to answer for the lady laying unconscious over there. And if you don't, I will leave and take you with me."
As he bellows into Cadderly's face, it would be clear to the party that the foreign hunter is distraught and confused, this may be the only way he's ever known to handle a situation bordering into the truly peculiar.
Cadderally doesn't look up from his work, finishing filling another bolt with the strange liquid, he seems oblivious to the fact Pendergast is threatening him.
"She is training - the truest test of a disciple of Master P who she is studying is to break the stone with your bare head. It's called the Iron Skull, I percured her that scroll myself.
Cadderally says this all matter of factly - as if he is unaware of her current state. A soft groan escapes her lips. Those of you who saw her when she left with Cadderally, notice in her short training trousers (think leather gym shorts) that the bolt wound and black lacing poison seem to have been healed.
How Odd - that she received healing and the Dean did not know of their return.
Little Iron with your previous Very High Insight Check - you believe someone has tampered with Cadderally's memory (and potentially Danica's). He seems not to remember the new party members who departed the library.
Merai is very disturbed by the scene . (Pox is just curious about it, although worries for Danica). “Cadderly, I know you will find this very hard to believe, but you know I am always honest with you and am a trusted friend. You are not being yourself. You should recognize these companions as those who went with us to get the Prince, on the orders of rhe Dean. When last we saw you, you were bringing Danica back here to treat her poisoning from those ruffians on the road. Is it possible you are under the influence of some spell? we believe the library is under imminent threat of attack- and perhaps has already been attacked with some enchantment that makes people behave oddly. And what are these vials?”
she looks curiously at Pendergast on noting his strange behavior- he had seemed so on board with the group only recently… 7 insight or passive 14.
Little Iron wanders the library going from one event to another. His normal mode of information gathering based on how he can sequester knowledge of people and events to later be used to his own advantage. Tidbits of conversations, oddities in individual behaviors revealing underlying personality traits, mannerisms that betray inner emotions, even unconscious ticks that speak louder than words never passed without notice. Now all of these things were over saturating his senses. His characteristic smug smile transformed into a clenched jaw line, his dancing mustache now drooping over his upper lip. His darting eyes now narrowed, scrutinizing the nature of the activity.
Illusion? No, he thought not.
Compulsion? Perhaps, there seemed a certain struggle with some of these adherents, as if they acted against their better selves.
"Outside forces dictating the behaviors of so many, and some so powerful in their own right. This is beyond concerning my friends, it is alarming. Our resources are limited and woefully inadequate in the face of this." Little Iron says to Merai and Ash. "I fear the Dean may not be of service to us for much longer. And it is clear these two are not going to be of any help. Indeed they mean to harm each other all the more. We need to consult with the Prince and Newander. Is there anyone else in the library who maybe able to assist us with deciphering the sudden change that has overtaken this place?"
OOC - Little Iron will cast detect magic, evaluating his mental questions for illusion, compulsion etc looking for any signs of what may be causing the behaviors
"Why Merai yes we are more than just friends- we are scholars and worshippers of Deneir. However I have never felt more myself. Do you see these - (he holds up a crossbow bolt) Invention is one of the main tenants of our religion, the ever pursuit of knowledge. These bolts are filled with oil of impact an explosive alchemical ingredient I percured at no small expense."
"Poison, Ruffians, no that can't be. Danica and I have been holed up in here for the last few nights since the Dragonborn arrived at the library. we both decided to pursue our goals in solitude. Attack on the library? It's is the only home I have known, if that is the case then I shall work to invent more. He throws the bandolier containing crossbow bolts at Merai.
Dex Save Merai to catch 12
Cadderally goes back to his work, fully drawn into his project.
Merai catches the Bandolier and avoids a near catastrophe in the room. There are7 finished crossbow bolts, each filled with oil of impact. When the bolts hit a target the glass breaks and caused 2D6extra force damage.
Little Iron Casts Detect Magic. As you finish the prayer to enact the magics you are almost overcome with sensory overload as you open your eyes. A pink mist permeates everything - the room, the hall and outside the windows it swirls and dances like a pink animated fog. It appears to be thicker around Cadderally, Danica and Merai. You can see that the wisps of pink mist circling the party members like a predator. The spell informs you the mist belongs to the enchantment school of magic.
Cadderally looks up at hearing the name Newander.
"My friend is here! I haven't seen him since I was 15. I feel I was supposed to see him." Cadderally looks down at his hands which appear covered in blood as are large stains across his clothing. His voice goes grim and his skin turns white. "Wine, why is there wine on me. The cellar, the shadows, there was ---
Assuming Little Iron is concentrating on Detect Magic, you notice a magical effect activate as Cadderally tries to make sense of things. Visually it appears to be a sickly purple barbed wires wrapping around his head. As he pushed further down his train of thought the wires constrict, this is also an enchantment.
Merai takes the Bandolier and hands it to Pox, shaking her head at the near catastrophe. “Keep that safe..”. Pox looks absolutely thrilled with them.
”Cadderly.. you are not acting normally..Merai says. But I don’t know what to do about it here. I think maybe we should report this to the Dean. I have no means to dispel these magical effects” She looks at Danica to ensure the monk is not dying, but is stable. Then she says to the others, “let’s go, unless you have any ideas for what we can do to break this enchantment?”
”Cadderly- Good job on the bolts. keep making them, we will keep the ammunition safe, be careful not to drop any. We will return soon.” She says
Little Iron describes what he sees and informs the party members of the active enchantment. "Merai, it seems very thick around you, are you sure you're okay?"
Little Iron describes what he sees and informs the party members of the active enchantment. "Merai, it seems very thick around you, are you sure you're okay?"
A remove curse spell could do the trick. You are unsure if the Dean has that specific scroll, but a handful of mid-level priests create magical scrolls for sale as freelance work at the library. You would have to hunt one down.
Additionally if any Clerics have enough of their wits about them they could be potentially cast it for you. You know it would require somone of more experience than the average member of either order of Deneir or Ogmha.
Merai says "thanks Little Iron, it is some sort of magical curse or spell then. lets get back to the dean, and see about getting some remove curse spells cast. "
Pox is looking at the crossbow bolts with a sense of wonder. "I need to buy a crossbow.." Pox says.
