Thaddeus will happily draw his dagger for Kiari to touch. “Thank you my dear. Some light to help watch our backs is good.”
As the ground shakes, Thaddeus licks his lips nervously. Sweat begins forming on his head. At Cales barking order he begins pushing forward with the others, moving quickly with the group, eyes nervously darting about the tunnel. “Hold it together old boy, he murmurs to himself.
Travis pauses for just a moment as the ground trembles around them. "That must be that damned dragon,"he mutters. "Like he said, let's move." He keeps trudging ahead down the passageway.
Kirari lights Thaddeus' dagger, then agreeing with Cale and echoed by Travis, picks up speed and touching Travis lightly on the shoulder. "Quickly and safely my friend."
She continues forward analyzing the structure about them trying to determine if it will hold. It's held for many years so far, and she expects it will but thinks back to days of underground archaeological study to remember lessens learned.
Inglenook stretches his arms out wide and above his head as he walks down the tunnel at the rear of the pack. He takes out a fist sized stone from a pocket in his backpack and whispers into it, it's not bright but the glow allows him to see immediately in front of him to avoid tripping or bumping into the others.
Soil beings to drop on his head when the tunnel shakes, "I hope that's one of you lot making that noise?!"
The party makes it to the end of the tunnel and Kiari would clearly see an iron gate with a similar lock to the one she unlocked with the key in the keep. If she were to peer out of the gate, she sees she is on the edge of the stream that runs through the south part of town.
Kirari moves forward quickly unlocking the gate and looking about the exit to make sure its clear of unfriendlies, then motions the group out relocking the tunnel if its clear.
@DM is it too late say I relocked the other end too?
Travis steps aside as Kirari works the door, also looking for any sign of enemies nearby. He then leads the way through the gate, looking around to take stock of the situation.
"As soon as this gate is open I will dart ahead and check it's clear"says Cale. He doesn't particularly fancy being first into danger, but knows he is best equipped to do it. He will hug the stream's banks and look for cover as he goes, scanning the surroundings for danger.
The professor waits behind the others in the tunnel. He’s not afraid of going out exactly, but knows that the more stealthy and armored units should be out scouting or forming a defensive perimeter before the vulnerable units... such as himself, should step out of cover. He feels excited about his first “adventure” even though it’s dangerous.
Travis doesn't notice it, but there is some motion at the other side of the stream. Cale picks it up, and he sees it is Beatrice, the guard who helped get the group started on the adventure! She is matching Cale's course on the other bank but does not seem to notice him due to his stealth. She does see the rest of the group come out of the tunnel, and she crouches in the foliage to stop and wait for the group to come out.
@Kiari, let's consider the door on the tower side is still unlocked but closed. Do you want to lock the grate that is on the bank of the stream?
Trying to think of a way to get the soldier's attention without spooking her and causing an 'accident', Cale tries to say at just the right volume (and with no emotion), "Beatrice. We've come to get you any remaining folk to the safety of the keep"
Kirari closes and locks the exit to the tunnel for now, not wishing to provide the raiders an alternate avenue to get into the keep. Whispering to the others, "I should have locked the other end. Hopefully this won't present a problem.." She then looks towards where they spotted Beatrice and waves, trying to make her way towards the soldier carefully. Taking her cue and crouching and traveling as quietly as she can manage. stealth10
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
There does not seem to be anyone else around other than Beatrice (at least none that the party notices), and while the group is doing its best to be stealthy, the occasional twig snaps or toad croaks in surprise as they move along the bank. This and Cale's greeting alert Beatrice, and she smiles recognizing the group from the prior afternoon. She lowers her hands as to signal to "stay low" and she wades across the stream. At its deepest part, the water comes up to just above her waist.
She greets the party and in a hushed tone and says, "I was coming for the gate to try and get into the keep. I have put out a few fires in the south, but I am sure Escobert and Nighthill need my help." Her face falls as she mentions the dragon by saying, "We lost many good guards today, and I think I saw 5 of my compatriots fall off the ramparts when the dragon spit its foul lighting at the keep. If you have just come from the keep, how fares the folks there? Did Escobert or Nighthill send you back out here??"
Kirari speaks up, "We spoke with Escobert upon arriving and advised of your injured status and what you'd mentioned to me earlier about what you'd encountered. After we left you, we started running into raiding parties. The first were setting upon a family who we saw to shelter in a neighbor's cellar. Oh these maps and pendants were on them." She says producing a crumpled paper and a cultist necklace, "I have a copy of each. When he heard that we wanted to check on you and see the family and others to safety he passed us the key to the Sally Port. The gates were shut and people sheltered when we left." Then she looks to the others to see if there is anything they can add to the information.
Travis nods at Beatrice. "I am glad to see that you are all right," he says. "We are also looking to capture a cultist and bring them in for questioning, so if you have any information on where we might find one, preferably a solo straggler, that would be helpful, too."
“Hello, you must be this Beatrice I’ve heard about?” The professor speaks quietly as he smiles warmly and sticks his free hand out. “The others have spoken a bit about their adventures getting to the keep. My name is Professor Thaddeus Holis. Nighthill suggested I join these fellows and offer what assistance I can. Pleased to meet you.”
”Can you tell us anything about the enemy positions or movement? We have a rough plan of attacking them in the rear as they advance on the keep.”
Inglenook stays away from the water fearing it would be way over his head, plus he doesn't fancy getting wet right now.
"Hi Beatrice, I am glad that you are ok. We are heading to help a family who we left hiding in a basement over in that direction." He points his finger to the area roughly of where they are hiding. " I am hoping we do not meet too many obstructions on the way"
Beatrice nods as she listens to the updates from the group. "Thanks to the healing and the time I was able to rest, I feel much better than when you first found me," she says. "I want to help rescue this family and get them back to the Sally Port here. I am ready to follow you all to the cellar." She brushes the water away from her scabbard and sees that her shortsword is still in good shape.
