You wander over to lane 2, where Flowerflash's owner directed you. A disheartened looking pixie stands holding the reins of a very sprightly looking giant snail, looking hopefully around for a racer. He spots you walking his way, and he seems relieved. "Hurry, my friend, the race is about to start. This is one important date you don't want to be late for." He gestures for your coin (eight silver pieces) and hurriedly offers to look after your things (you don't want any extra weight) and pushes you up onto the snail. "He'll take good care of you. Just don't let go!" he jests as he and another pixie tending Nimblefoot take their leave.
Wildred,
The little owner takes his eight silver and helps you up onto Flowerflash. "Hah!, Not done this before, lad?" he remarks, picking up on your uncertainty, "Here's the trick, keep your weight forward and be gentle on those reins, and she won't let you down." The snails looked large from the ground, but now you are up atop of one. You feel like it is a long way down.
Balliol & Wildred,
(ooc: please deduct 8 sp from your character sheet)
The race is about to start. All of the snail hands have vacated, and it is now just the eight racing snails and their mounts, and everyone is ready. The race caller's voice is heard echoing throughout the track. "Ladies and Gentleman, Pixies and Sprites, and fairgoers alike. The field is set for the Witchlight Carnivals most exciting race." The crowd cheers with jubilation. All of a sudden. You are alone. This is happening, and it is every racer for themself.
"Ready to race." You look at your steed and ahead towards the dusty, oval track. The sound of the crowd fades away until all you can hear is your breath and the snort of the giant snail beneath you.
You take in a deep breath. "Stand by for a start"...
Stalker, You stand back and watch from afar as Halei sits by the boy, and from what you can see, they chat a little, and both sit back to watch the singing bard. Viro seems comfortable with Halei.
You glance around the feasting orchard. Music and mirth radiate from this park. The heady scents of flowers, mead, and berry pie waft through the air. Stilt-walkers pluck fruit from trees; musicians drum, pipe, and strum; and everywhere there is singing, dancing, and an inordinate amount of custard.
Halei, You make your way over to Viro and are surprised to see him smile at you as he pats the ground next to him, encouraging you to sit with him. You ask about the gnomish woman who is playing such enchanting music. He answers you with a returned whisper, "They call her Tumblestrum! I like her singing", and he settles in to enjoy your company and Tumblestrums music.
As you sit and enjoy the tunes, Tumblestrum looks at you straight into your eyes as if she can see right inside your mind. She holds her gaze for quite some time and smiles right at you with a warm and lovely smile.
While Halei listens, our 'quarry caught' as it were, Stalker wanders over to the serving area. He flags down the oldest looking bartender/server and asks for a mead. He tips very well and asks the older server if they have heard of a person with a scar on their cheek named Zybilna.
Halei stiffens a little at Tumblestrum's warm but almost piercing gaze, and looks away after a few moments, as someone who usually is the one reading others she doesn't quite like being on the other end. She looks back down to the child, "so who is the big cat to you? Are they your caretaker?" she questions curiously.
Stalker wanders over casually to the Tumblestrum. He has a hand on a sword. He keeps a neutral face as Halei waits for an answer. He pulls a dragon piece from his chess set and puts it in his hand, tossing and catching it casually. He's not sure how he'll need to wade in, but looks about and assesses the situation: potential threats, potential escape routes. He pastes a slack smile on his face as if the mead is affecting him or he is just a fair going fool.
A wood-elf dressed in a white shirt, butterfly wings and a red and yellow striped kilt addresses your call, "One Mead, coming right up, Sir!" quite obviously delighted at your generous tip (please deduct 8 silver pieces from your character sheet). He pauses when you ask about a person with a scar? "Sir?" he questions, "There must be twenty folk feasting I can see with scars right now." The wood-elf gives you a slightly confused smile and jostles off through the crowd to get your mead.
Shortly after the wood-elf returns with your mead. "Here you are, Sir. Best mead you are going to taste today", and he runs off to answer the call of another thristy fairgoer.
You make your way over to where Halei is listening to Tumblestrum. You give your attention cautiously to the bard as she plays her lute. She holds her gaze for quite some time and smiles right at you with a warm and lovely smile. She watches amused as you play with your imaginary chess peice. There doesn't appear to be any immediate threat.
Halei
"Who, Dirla? Nobody, maybe? I dunno, Mother left us with him." Viro answers to your question.
Stalker walks over and stands beside where you and the boy sit and talk. He is sipping on a drink and cautiously investigating the bard and her music.
Viro continues, "She said she would return soon. I had better go back. Can you take me there please?" the boy asks politely and he grabs your hand and stands up.

The Witchlight Cup
Wildred & Balliol
... and with a crack and a fizz, fireworks sprout above the race track, the crowd goes absolutely wild with an unanimous cheer as the snails leap from the starting line. Much faster than you could possibly have expected.
"And they are racing in the Witchlight cup." the race caller's commentary echos throughout the track and stands.
"and Nimblefoot has defied his fiction. The not so slow and steady racer has taken the early lead. Followed closely by Queen's Majesty and a steady feel that follows."
Viro in hand, you wander back to the lost property caravan where Dirla gives you a look that defines relief. From the keg fastened around its neck the cat pours Viro a cup of toffee apple juice and asks the lad where he has been.
"Oh, we were just listening to Tumblestrums tales."
"Dear me. I have asked you to stay away from that planeswalker, Viro. Was she telling stories about Zybilna and Prismeer again." Dirla replies, this time with a gentler tone as not to frighten the boy off again."
Viro hides a shy smile, "She told me her lute has magic strings that whisper secrets in her ears as she plucks them."
"They are just stories, Viro. Pay her no attention. I told you it is best just to stay clear of her. Can I have the ball back now, please."
The big cat turns to you both and gratefully says "Thank you for bringing him back. Many years ago, my own cub, Star, vanished from the carnival without a trace. All I have to remember her by is this mirrored ball. It was her favorite toy." You can see the pain on its face as the feline is obviously distressed at loosing its own child.
"The Nimblefoot and the Harengon mount, continue to defy the knowledge as he holds lead with outstanding speed. Breakneck and Queen's Majesty foot to foot in 2nd and 3rd. And what's this, Flowerflash and the wizard, looks like a crowd favourite with the crowd cheering them on, how can they not help but be bolstered (extra 20' speed). Trailing is High Road and Wizzy as they head into the first corner."
"Oh, we need to go back and find her", Halei tells Stalker. "It was really no problem! Happy to help! Do people disappear often? And could you tell me more about Tumblestrum? We are actually looking for Zibilna!" Halei asks Dirla.
Bugs raced along on his giant snail. It was exhilarating! How could this thing be a snail?! They moved at an amazing pace and Bugs enjoyed every moment of the wind-whipping excitement. He'd heard the pixie commenting to Wildred about keeping his weight forward so he leaned into the beast and encouraged it to go faster! Nimblefoot indeed! This was truly a race he did not want to be late for! As he zipped past the other snails in the races early stages he shouted out, "No time to say 'hello, goodbye,' I'm late, I'm late, I'm late!" He clung to his mount and encouraged it in every way he thought a snail might take encouragement!
(OOC: Roll number 3 came up a 16. So far, so good.)
Stalker's offer to look for Star sparks up some excitement in the great cat and Dirla is now far less reticent.
"Yes, too many children and other things go missing at this carnival. I try not to speak of these things in front of the children, but rumours suggest that a dark force of some kind has menaced Zybilna and Prismeer. I fear my cub has been lured to Prismeer, some say there is a portal here, and the only people at this fair that would know are Mr Witch and Mr Light. I have approached them, but they say nothing. They are on edge about something, so I suggest a cautious approach if you plan to confront them. Perhaps your best action is to sneak into the staff area, behind the Big Top and spy on them." Dirla turns his attention to the two boys again. "Thank you!" he says sincerely. "Oh, did you say you are looking for a woman with a scar on her cheek? I have heard of a great and powerful witch, Natasha the Dark. She has a tattoo of a chicken's foot on her cheek. Could it be her that you seek? There is a wooden mannequin of her over by the Hall of Illusions." Again, distracted by Viro and Allowin, "I really must tend to these boys. I don't want to lose one again. Thank you and good luck."
"Take this," and Dirla hands you the mirrored ball. "Star will recognise this. Her favourite toy."
(Ooc: You both decide who takes the ball and let me know please.)
"...as they cross the half way mark, Queen's Majesty moves up on Nimblefoot, for an equal footing at this stage of the race. Neck and Neck is Flowerflash and Breakneck, both egged on by the crowd and gaining speed. The not so dizzy, Wizzy is tailing the line and holding the back of the pack."
Balliol adjusts his stance as he sees his first place position at risk. Now shared with Queen’s Majesty. Wildred has got the hang of this as Flowerflash makes a leap forward in the race now in equal second (courtesy of that roll).
"It's up to you if you want to take the ball or not, whichever you think it best, I don't mind either way. We should go look for the Staff Area and make a plan once we see what it looks like."
Why don't you take the ball - your persuasion abilities are much better than mine. Do you want to go right to the staff area or visit this 'Natasha the Dark' first? I'm okay with either.
"... a poor run into the final corner by Queen's Majesty puts Nimblefoot in the lead, but Queen's Majesty is still in with a chance in second with Flowerflush hot on her tail in third with..., what's this, Breakneck has lost a lot of speed (Nat 1), it could be an injury, hard to tell from here. High Road has made exceptional time (Nat 20) but it may be too little too late. Shellymoo and Whizzy tailing the line to see who will come in last. Let's see what the final corner and last straight has in store."
(ooc: You are currently both located near the lost property caravan, Please discuss and let me know where you are headed. Halei, I have added Star's mirrored ball to you inventory, in your backpack.)
