The joyous and energetic atmosphere of the first floor is shattered by panicked shouting.
“That trunk!” a young elf screams, pointing toward the stacks as she runs by. “That trunk has teeth! Please, anyone, stop it!”
Chaos erupts in the library as students stream in all directions, their books and papers flying as they shout in fear. In the Western Stacks study area where the Live-Action Role Play Guild was working on monster costumes, one of the costume trunks has come to life and is tearing through the Guild's assembled materials. Its hinged lid clamps down like a jaw as it tears off a table leg with razor sharp... teeth? The only faculty mages in sight are trying to deal with panicked students. You can’t just let some monster ruin your big day, especially one that's only 30 feet away! Time to step up!
18 - Aelyn, Ambre, and Aklokloysius all act at the same time

12 - Arvol
10 - Trunk with Teeth
Top of the first round of the first combat of our campaign...
Aelyn, Ambre, and Aklokloysius are up! Aithne is on deck.
Aklokolysius, Klok as his friends call him, hears the screams and comes lumbering in. At 7'7, lumbering is what Klok does. He sees this trunk that has come alive and calmly says "Classmates please come to me, this way, this way. Exit behind me in an orderly fashion, yes, yes this way." He brushes the dirt and soil off his green robes and takes out his yew wand. He belts out in druidic casting Thorn Whip on the trunk.
(OOC: 13 hits - roll for damage! For future reference, if you use the dice tool you can pick a combat roll option that rolls your attack and damage for you automatically!)
Trunk strength save: 5
A tangle of magic thorns grow from Klok's yew wand and wrap around the trunk, piercing it with sharp needles and yanking it closer toward him and away from the Live-Action Roleplaying Guild's supplies.
"Great job!" Aelyn shouts to the Loxodon, sprinting by it on its left side and flanking the toothy trunk to the left. "Arvol, attack from the right, I'll distract it for you." He shouts and draws his rapier and switftly curses the abomination (Hex, dex) ready to strike as soon as Arvol is in position. Rapier attack: 23 (rolled with advantage for flanking, otherwise go with first roll ) Piercing: 6 Necrotic: 1
As a reaction if the toothy trunk takes a bite, Aelyn will cast Silvery Barbs giving advantage to the whip-wielding Loxodon. (Owl - Is it less than 10 minutes since Aelyn inspired Arvol, Ambre and Aithne?)
Ambre appears to be both surprised and in awe of a chest with teeth, but shakes herself out of it. Shaking herself out of it (and finally feeling the expresso kicking in), she pulls a heavily modified crossbow. She flicks a switch near the handle, aims, then fires. Rather than the loaded crossbow bolt, a bolt of fire launches from the end instead.
"Oh, lady of the scribes..." Having just come through the doorway into the library and taking in the chaotic scene, Aithne was tempted to follow the path of the fleeing students. Surely the teachers could handle this? She was a scholar! Not some... some... warrior mage! The most combat experience she had was shooing rats out of the pantry. But she wasn't going to run if it meant leaving her classmates in danger. She was inexperienced, not cowardly. Gathering her scrambled thoughts, she began moving her fingers through a series of rapid spell signs. The light surrounding her bent, creeping shadows extending as she forged the stolen illumination into a lance of energy and threw it at the attacking creature.
Sacred Flame; Attack: Dexterity Save 13, Damage: 8
The Trunk narrowly avoids Aithne's radiant spell in its newborn frenzy, but the same cannot be said for the attacks inflicted on it by Arvol, Aelyn, and Ambre. The monster gurgles and growls as it sloppily tries to hit Aelyn with its sticky, slobbery pseudopod tongue. Before it can, though, the bard whispers under his breath and brilliant, sharp thorns of silver energy surrounds the Trunk with Teeth.
(Fun fact: This creature has disadvantage on all of its attack rolls, but now thanks to Silvery Barbs it basically has double disadvantage - it has to roll THREE times and take the lowest result!)
Trunk Attack: 10 Damage: 10
Third disadvantage roll Attack: 13 Damage: 11
Aelyn deftly pirouettes out of the way of the creature's attack, avoiding any harm. The silvery barbs then dissipate around Klok, filling them with inspiration.
It is now Klok's turn! (Keep in mind that thanks to Silvery Barbs, you have advantage on your next ability check, attack roll, or saving throw you make in the next minute.)

"Hah, eat this!"Aelyn says and moves to finally flank properly with Arvol, thrusting his rapier into the maw of the aberration. Rapier: 20 Piercing: 4 Necrotic: 4
Seeing that her attack had no effect, Aithne dropped her focus on the spell and stepped back, searching for any students that remained in the creature's path. She directed those that remained out of the library and held position at the doorway, preventing any curious individuals from entering. "Please stay back." She cautioned, shooing at students gathering to watch, ensuring they stayed far enough away that they weren't in danger.

Arvol now seems to catch on to Aelyn's plan and moves a bit right to flank the living trunk, then lunges with his sword. (Rapier Attack: 26 Damage: 9) (Sneak Attack Damage: 6)
As Aithne keeps the remaining students and bystanders out of the line of fire, the efforts of Klok, Aelyn, Ambre, and Arvol bring the strange Trunk with Teeth to heel! Arvol strikes it with one last thrust of his rapier, right through the hinged lid. The Trunk gurgles and growls as it rocks back and forth in agony, then suddenly stills as the pseudopod tongue and razor-sharp teeth slowly fade away... the Trunk has once again become a normal trunk! The students around you murmur with curiosity, some even clap and cheer for your courage. Soon, the flapping of wings fills your ears as a familiar face lands amongst you - Professor Mavinda Sharpbeak, your guidance counselor.
“Students, well done!” Professor Sharpbeak exclaims, ruffling her feathers with pride. “Such bravery in this incoming class! And what a bizarre occurrence. I can’t remember any of those old costume trunks ever bearing a hint of magic—let alone that manner of transmutation. I will be having a word with the equipment managers over at the Rose Stage. They’re supposed to keep this sort of thing from happening! Are you all alright?”
Arvol glances around as he sheathes his rapier. "I'm ok," he says quickly, looking around at his companions. "Aelyn? Ambre? Where's..." He turns and then sees Aithne. He looks relieved. "There you are too, Aithine." Lastly he looks up at the Loxodon that was fighting with them. "Nice job getting folks to safety and fighting that thing off! Glad you were here too. I'm Arvol Flintwind."
Klok sheathes his scimitar and bows to the group. “Hello! Hello! Thank you all for helping me subdue this tainted trunk. My name is Aklokolysius but if we are to be friends, you may call me Klok. I heard the commotion coming in from gardening. I am happy to make your acquaintances"

"Oh I dont act," Ambre say as she collects her lantern. "But if you need something built I'll help."
At the sound of the screams Ambre looks over in that direction. "Well, that doesnt sound good."
