Ky is going to go up to the ladder and investigate the entrance. She is trying to see how solid and thick the ice is that is covering the entrance, and what kind of entrance it is.
Climbing up and poking at it with a dagger, you are surprised by its resilience. It seems to be as hard as rock. Looking at its depth, it only appears to be about 2 inches thick. The ice seems to be magical in some way, to resist damage, or be extra hard.
In your estimation, it will be difficult, but not impossible to break through/melt it... it just depends on how long vs. How quiet you can be.
Cyrnair rolls his eyes at Ky's comment about his question to Ennis.
"That's why I asked Ennis if he can make you flight... Maybe it's surprising to you but I actually care about the others even if I don't need it. I can use my wings for the combat, I guess that the combat will end before I had to retract them. One way or another." he says explaining to her with a tired tone of voice, as if he is tired to explain the most obvious things to the elf, even if he is still whispering.
"I see... " he says to Ennis " Don't worry Ennis your magic will be useful anyway. Then we have to cripple its wings as soon as possible Flint. With all that we got... but let's see if we can enter the lair first. "
"What do you think of this.. " he says to the others. " Flint casts his silent magic. We take care of that ice, not with our most powerful magics, but as quickly as possible. Then Ky cast her spell again, to aid us to move unnoticed. Caradoc peeks out and then we follow, if we can we surround the dragon and aim for the shoulders trying to cripple his ability to fly. The ruins surely will provide us places to attack it even if it is flying and also to cover us from its breath weapon... What do you say?" he ask to the rest of the party.
Flint doesn't seem as concerned with the fact about the nature of the ice. "I can keep up quite as long as we need without expended much of my abilities. The only thing is the time that is going to take us to get through it. Might we consider another route. Also, I can provide us with some cover as well when we are wanting to try to remain unnoticed above...so, Lera doesn't have to expend any more of her powers." He flashes a smile to the wood elf.
"Cyrnair!" Caradoc hisses. "I said not now! We've got winged death lurking right up there and Ky has risked her life today just as much as any of us. Philosophize to your heart's content when we get home."
Caradoc nods at Flint. "I was thinking about another route as well - we could go see what was making the chittering and clanking noises in the building west of the tower. My gut says it's where the drakes are stabled, but who knows?"
"But, it looks like the dragon is pretty convinced that it has this entry closed off, so its attention will probably be focused on the other entries into the tower. So if we can sneak through where it thinks it is secure... how would you melt the ice, Flint? Can you make magical fire?"

Ky hears the tone but chooses to ignore it from Cyrnair, acting as if it did not phase her at all. "I wont need it. So long as it is within 600 feet, I have a chance to hit it. I would prefer it to be a bit closer, but it cant attack us either if it stays that far away."
Looking to Ennis, Ky says "I have seen you fight before. You have some fire magics if I remember correctly right. Maybe you can blast it a few times while it is silent, and we can get some of our stronger people to whack at it with their fire weapons?"
OOC: DM, you said the rubbery creatures were making chittering noises. Are they the same noises we heard in the building Carodoc is talking about?
"I can turn one or two of us invisible for scouting. Should help a bit, though I'd bet the dragon may have other ways to sense our presence."
"And your axe is good at melting things, isn't it?"

OOC: The chittering noise you heard earlier did sound very familiar to the Rubbery creature that is standing right next to you after leading you to this location.
OOC: Based on your investigations, you think the Firebrand Axe could chop through the ice in a reasonable amount of time, being magical and flaming itself. Sacred flame could also work in a reasonable amount of time. Other then that you are not sure how long it would take to break through the magical lair ice.
OOC: You have about 20 minutes left of PwaT
While you are discussing, you notice that the rubbery creature is sitting there behind you, chittering quietly to itself rubbing its fanged hands together also subconsciously. You also notice the eyestalk is staring at all of you, but the creature seems to be doing nothing else at the moment.
Giving a nod to the rest of the party, Flint kneels down some distance from the frozen hatch - as he doesn't wish his incantations to possibly be heard - and begins a ritual to bring about a sphere of silence around the hatch. After that is done, between Gelin's strikes with his flaming ax, the cleric begins a barrage of sacred flame.
While the Gelin and Flint work on the fire Cyrnair takes Caradoc apart were the others can't hear them.
"Just a second Caradoc, real quick." he says "Listen I am not going to argue with her but it's just that she seems to ignore whatever I say on porpouse. I asked twice Ennis if he can make the rest flight, twice... and she asks me why I ask for the fly spell? for Flint, Gelin and you of course! Have you heard her answer? " I don't need it..." She gets my out of myself I admit but as I said I am not going to argue with her when we are about to fight a dragon or something worse. We cannot fail Caradoc, not only Grundens Calling depend on us. I have the feeling that more innocent lifes are at stake here. So you don't have to worry about me. I will fight alongside her, defend her and die to protect her as I would do for any of you. And you be extra careful when you scout inside that lair... I have the feeling that we are walking into a trap."
He turns and walks away back where the rest of the party is taking out the ice trying to ignore the creature that had guided them there.
With the ritual cast of silence, Flint continues to summon radiant flames yo melt away the ice from the access hatch. It's an odd thing to see. There are bright flashes of light, and you feel the heat wash over you, but there is no sound.
After about 1 minute of continual casting, Flint looks winded but the ice looks thin, maybe a centimeter in thickness, and there is enough of a gap on the handle to try and force it opened.
Breathing heavily, Flint makes he way over to Cyrnair, who he notices appears to have finished a passionate with Caradoc. Saying nothing on that matter, he lays a hand on the paladin's arm, "I think you may be the better one to break the hatch free. We're going to need every bit of help, I feel, getting that open." He smiles and takes his hand away having given the paladin guidance.

Cyrnair nods and with a stern look walks over the the entrance and grabs the handle. He tries to open it breaking the ice but not open it all the way. The idea is that it would be Caradoc who open it trying to infiltrate not him forcing it.
(STR check: 18 (If athletics add 2 to that result) plus guidance: 2 )
Cyrnair climbs the ladder and gets a good grip on the ladder before heaving. He grunts with the strain, which makes no noise. It does not budge at first, but the ice fractures. Grunting again he throws his weight into it, feeling a small bruise form on his shoulder (but no damage, just flavor.)
(With a DC of 15, the athletics check of 20 total is easily enough.)
With the last heave, Cyrnair silently breaks through the ice. The access panel gives way, and flips opened under his pressure about a full foot before he remembers to be more stealthy and hangs on to the handle. Peaking out while pushing it opened (passive perception) Cyrnair sees a large empty room roughly 40x40 in a circle with 15 foot ceilings. There are portions of the falls to the north that are missing, and the entrance to the building to the south has a thick beam of wood leaning against it, but it is not locked, though the doors are closed.
There is a great deal of rubble laying about, and Looking up at the ceiling to this room, about 1/2 of it is missing. In its place looks like ice that has been formed to support the structure and complete the floor.
Other then that, you see nothing. It seems as if much of the guard force is outside of this keep.

Ennis nods.
"I have some fire magic, but it's not the most basic stuff to cast, so I can't use too much of it."
"All I have is a simple spell that produces the holy flames granted by Artemis."
(Sacred Flame)
Oh dear...do we seriously NOT have fire bolt at all to help get through this ice?
