Bree stares intently at the key held in the mouth of the cared dragon, held in a place of honor above the head of the Kobold leader. It certainly looks like a real key, but it's hard to tell what - if anything - it might open.
Rantel approaches the cage and peers in at the humanoids. Are they in decent shape? Can he recognize anything about them? Anything to show they might be the two they're looking for? He gets out his waterskin and his rations and hands them through the bars.
"Might want to wait on that Rantel" zerxius says quietly eyes never leaving the kobald leade"You want your dragon i. Or we need more information. Both inregards to the dragon and those we are tasked to find"
As Rantel moves closer to the bars the rank smell of unwashed goblin makes his eyes tear up. There are four small creatures chained in this room, all of them covered in untreated injuries and open sores.
There are no signs of the two adventurers you seek here - all the gear is of goblin make and size.
The Kobold guard stand behind you but allow you to approach the bars and reach in with food and water.
The goblinkin look up, but are chained too far from the bars to have any hope of getting the desperately needed water from your hands. They look longingly at the canteen in your hand.
Yusdrayl sees you at the gate to the room 'Those? Are those what you seek? You want them? I will give them to you if you bring us back the dragon. It is decreed! Go now - this one' Yusdrayl waves dismissively at Meepo 'will guide you and bring Caltrax back to the clan and restore our honor - or won't return.' The last bit said in a menacing tone while staring down at the dragon keeper's prone form.
Having received his orders and dismissal, Meepo begins crawling backwards away from the makeshift throne, groveling and muttering thanks as he does. Once he is about 30 feet back from Yusdrayl, the small Kobold stands, and continues backing down the great hall, bowing and mumbling thanks the entire time. He gestures at you all to do the same.
Summary and Action
The kobolds believe they have resolved this situation and Meepo is ready to move on and lead you to the Goblins. How would you like to proceed?
(We are not seeing missing goblins, but rather humans? Or half-elves?)
Seeing their quarry not in the cage, Rantel makes a rueful look and throws four rations through the bars, but keeps his canteen. It more vegetable than they likely want, but it has some water in it.
He turns back. "These are not the ones we seek. Taller. Fancy adventurer folk. Probably human. You've seen anyone like that? About five, six weeks back?"
(You are indeed looking for Human or human-ish adventurers. These are definitely feral goblins)
As Meepo crawls away, Rantel calls out to Yusdrayl - his voice ringing through the hall. 'Ahhh you seek the young ones, haughty and confident. Yes, they came through here as well. They sought the Outcast, the goblin-master himself. They went to fight the goblins as well - but that was some time ago. We have not seen them since.'
Rantel gets the impression that Yusdrayl is being honest with them - at least about not having the adventurers in custody and his seeming disinterest in them in general.
Meepo backs out of the room and motions you all the follow him through a set of double doors at the opposite end of the hall. You enter a large room, dim with the smoke from numerous small campfires. Spits, tanning racks, and other implements of a primitive culture are visible through the haze. Several small figures busily work and play within the chamber.
Meepo makes his way over to a corner of the room and begins hurriedly gathering a long curved stick, up some supplies, pulling a bandolier with gourds of some sort strapped in place over his head and settling it across his meager chest, he turns back to you all and looks expectantly 'You all will help Meepo return dragon and Meepo will help you find your friends, agreed?'
Without waiting for positive confirmation, the scrawny Kobold turns and leads you all back through a series of chambers, using his staff to point out or disarm crude traps along the way. 'This is how the Goblins come, this is how we will go to bring back our Dragon.'
After no more than 10 minutes time, he brings you to a halt halfway down a long hallway. To the West is a single door that Meepo has stopped in front of, gesturing at it cautiously 'Goblins are here' he says, gesturing at the door with his staff.
To the north you see what appears to be a small altar against the far wall about 100-120 feet away. Several doors lead off the north-south passage, opening to the east and west.
In the room behind you (to the south) where the trailing edge of the party is stopped you see a room an ornate fountain is built into the eastern wall. Though cracked and stained, the fountain’s overarching carving of a diving dragon retains its beauty. A relief-carved stone door stands on the western wall.
Summary and Action
Ok adventurers, how would you like to proceed.
Meepo is pointing you towards a door to the West as the path towards the Goblins.
Investigation, Survival, Perception, Arcana, Religion checks all welcomed. Feel free to take Advantage if you roleplay who/how you get Help from a comrade.
Zerexius, trailing behind the rest of the party has his eye caught by the dry fountain.
A thin layer of scum coats the fountain’s basin, but it is otherwise dry. His keen eyes notice a mostly worn-away inscription in Draconic on the basin’s front. It reads, “Let there be fire.”
Further down the hallway, the monk notices some spikes driven into the floor at the far end of the hallway.
As Zerexius finishes reading the inscription, reddish liquid begins to well from the fountain, spurting out of a carved stone diving dragon’s mouth and begins slowly accumulating in the basin of the fountain.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Jane walks over to the fountain, curious about all the dragon motifs and the alters. There must be something to them, some reason that they are all here. "There sure are a lot of things about dragons in this place, but why here specifically, in these ruined towers and halls? Is anyone familiar with the symbolism, why there might be alters?
As the red liquid starts to fill the fountain she looks at it, smells the air near it, then sets down her shield and quarterstaff to start taking a torch out of her bag. "Fire you say? Do you think we should try lighting the fountain on fire?"
Jane and Zerexius examine the symbols and carving around the fountain, remembering the ornately carved dragon door they found earlier. Jane seems to recall an old story - almost a fairy tale about a lost citadel, one built and maintained by a dragon cult that valued privacy and defense. That fortress had been built in the light, on the surface - not here underground.
The cult’s name has vanished over time, though various sources believe that it was associated with the dragon Ashardalon. It appears that a cataclysm killed the cult members and sank the fortress at the same time. Perhaps because of some sort of residual enchantments, it seems much of the structure survived its descent into the earth.

Are you collecting the liquid? Give me an arcana check.
What are the rest of you doing?
Room ahead of you has some spikes set in the floor to the far north and doors to the East and West of the corridor between where you stand and where those spikes have been driven into the floor.
To your West is the door Meepo indicates is the entrance to the Goblin lair.
Bree raises an eyebrow at Meepo and then approaches the door he indicates they should enter. Leaning in close, she listens in to see if she can hear anything beyond it.
