Chadderlay follows on the heels of his companions. Once two members or more of the party have gone through the portal he figures everyone will and doesn't want to be left behind or leave the fate of those already gone through undecided.
"Wait for me!"
(When asked for a memory.):
A much younger Chadderlay Wittmoore sits in a chair as his aunt Morwena shaves his head.
"Explain to me once again why Swass Tam is permitted to continue his unholy existence? I mean really, when has summoning an army of undead ever worked out for a necromancer?"
"Well, while some upstarts have devoted their plans to foolishly challenging him and utterly failing, many others have realized that he is a great distraction for others looking at Thay and that leaves us free to pursue our plans." Morwena takes her time and shaves with care, not wanting to leave any unsightly scars.
"I guess, I mean it is a clever ruse."
"Change of topic, have you given any thought about what style of tattoos you might adorn your scalp with?" and with Morwena's change of topic the memory ends.

"A rightful place awaits you in the Realms Above, in the Land of the Great Light. Come in peace, and live beneath the sun again, where trees and flowers grow."
— The message of Eilistraee to all decent drow.
"Run thy sword across my chains, Silver Lady, that I may join your dance.”
Morwena enters, looking behind her to see she isn't followed, "i wasnt sure how wed deal with those wretched, -" she pauses as she turns to see the creepy cabin, "things."
upon hearing the hags' offer, she accepts the terms and a memory is revealed. She sits in conversation with Chadderlay
"Besides," Morwena notes, "Necromancy is the backbone of the Thayan economy. Without it how could we stay competitive with Aglorand?"
The scene jump curs to her standing beside D'arlon Ma, a broken woman, distraught. As Ma reveals to her the undead messenger sent from the embassy. The remembered event was plainly years ago and in Thay. On sight of the undead messenger, the sobbing Morwena's lip trembles as she utters the name of her late lover in a whisper, echoed by a pained howl filled with anguish and primal rage: "T-Taiss? Taiss! Nooo-ho-haaah-ah-ah-ah!"
In the cabin, a cold expression remains in the red wizard's face. "Two for the price of one. A bargain in kind for your generosity."

As always, combat us an option, though you are free to leave. The fiends are obviously evil and I've described all the treasure they have around the room, plus you csn assume anything else a night hag would have on them. They are obviously a coven. You got what you came for, namely the second step in opening barrier around the spire of Iriolarthas.

Angus wonders aloud, "So... the three of you just wait for eons in this cramped demiplane hoping somebody wanders in? I mean, how long has it been? That city looked pretty deserted, I can't imagine you have many visitors. What the blazes do you spend all your free time doing, carving gourds? Speaking of which, do tell, what is the significance of that particular carving?"

"I'll have you know, young man, this coven frequently leaves its den to roam the Ethereal Plane in search of treasure chests tucked away using the Leomund’s secret chest spell. Why, just yesterday we returned from our latest jaunt."

"That?" Auntie Pillage gestures to the inscription, " 'twas here long before we made this forsaken place our home. Perhaps you shoukd inquire with the locals, a fair number of the little buggers still scurrying about the place, always prattlimg some incessant madness."
"Now," rises Auntie Pinch, approaching the door, "our business done, you should see yourselves out."
"Unless," calls the sing song voice of Auntie Plunder, "you'd like to stay for a while." She grins, a sinister smile creeping across her face.
also, seeing the sign in draconic, Tetrevess uses prestidigitation to summon a flame into his hand.
You also discern that the trio of Pinch, Pillage and Plunder are theives.
In response to the fire, Auntie Pillage demands: "You got somwthing to say, sweetie? Or did you just want to help with the stew?" A bubbling kettle steams over the open fire in the fireplace.

I would guess the child was turned into a gourd and it was a frightening and or painful experience, hence the expression. In any event, it probably happened a century ago, far too late to do anything about it now. At this point, it's just an object, but that is its likely origin.
So, fight or flight? They said you can leave, having paid your debt for disturbing them and they seem impatient to conclude that business. On the other hand, they are evil theives with a bunch of loot. Of course, they are a coven of night hags, so maybe not worth the effort?
(Angus would be inclined to fight, but not alone. He has only about 3 level one slots left. What do the other party members think? I mean, he knows where they live, he can always return to fight later.)
(Tetrevess looks at angus, and silently says to the group - (through the telepathic bond they share) “I am in to fight them if you all are. These things are horrid. But it won’t be easy”.

(Actually Angus was asking about the gourd carved like a screaming child...)
"Who says it's carved?" Comes the reply.
That us the answer. It's loot, gotta claim it to find out.
(Am I to understand there is an actual child somehow attached to the gourd?)

Didn't we just take a long rest?
You did.
