With her focus on tracking Sephek, based on the above Survival and Perception rolls, Sabetha attempts to discern (without getting too close) whether the fresh tracks she has been following from near Tond's house go to one of the tents, and whether any fresh tracks come back out.
“We have no time to lose, Greth'g'karee.Spurned, her sister dead by my hand, Mallifyr must not reach the rendezvous point before we do, lest she warn her compatriots. She carries a heavy load; we do not.” Eva hurries forward, as fast as her legs can take her, in pursuit of the bandits.
As the party approaches the tents, the sound of the dogs excitedly barking indicates activity that still isn't visible due to the tents. There does not appear to be any activity within the tents at this time and the tracks appear to go through the midst of them. Sabetha notices that the largest of the tents is emblazoned with a symbol that she saw on an amulet that was hanging from Torrga's neck. There are a few scattered and empty boxes, but the camp looks well-kept overall.
Using his devil sight, Aubin can see through the little gaps between the tents that Sephek, or someone about his size, is bent over, working on something. Perhaps tying some sort of bundle.
Blackberry is able to sneak among the tents without drawing Sephek's attention. From his vantage point, he can see Sephek tying a large bundle into a dog sled. The dogs are already attached.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Damn, I think I see Sephek tying something. Lets move closer. I will not let him get away"says Aubin angrily. He does his best using the tent as cover and stealthily moves closer
Sabetha's whisper sounds distant. Only a sliver of sadness and compassion remain in an idea that would have broken her heart just yesterday.
"Ambush starts as soon as we all have a shot. Remember, kill at range. He can teleport short distances as the fey and some mages do. If he closes with us instead of running, I am a little less wounded than Naraeld. Try to funnel him towards melee with me and I will dodge as long as I can. Though if he is hell bent on killing Naraeld," a flicker of surprise colors Sabetha's pale face at the unexpected thought, "then he and I flank."
Sabetha readies a longbow attack on Sephek for when she believes all four of them have a clear shot (roughly 120'), though if the dogs start pulling the sled with Elk Running's body, she will indeed suit action to words and shoot the innocent sled dogs to stop the Frostmaiden's thrall.
She moves forward as quietly as she can (40' movement) behind the cover of trees and tents, lining up her shot.
Blackberry will continue to sneak forward until he is within 90 feet of Sephek. He will then cast sleep in such a way that the human is within the spell's range but the dogs are not.
Spell roll: 20 (game log) If Sephek has 20 hp or less, he falls asleep.
Greth'g'karee acknowledge Eva's distress and shrugs. "We only need to shadow them for a brief moment to identify the leaders we seek. Once we do, we can then track their leader. Hidden and silent is best. If the woman did not lie then many of the enemy were mislead. It will be hard for the leaders to control them, and most will want to release the children for fear of being hunted for their part in this attack. They will also seek payment, if she was not lying. These things will afford us time. Even if the leader lures the many into a horrible trap of death to kill off many witnesses and not have to pay anyone, it will be easier still. Then we will only have to find a few tracks leading away, instead of a great many. Once we know where they sleep, we can gather the others and visit pain and eventual death upon them. So much of this seems like tribal politics to me though. It feels like someone else set these things into motion. Time will tell." As he talks he watches the woman and her dead sister slip further and further away, until he is fairly convinced they are out of sight. "Good. Now we go."
He will lead, using tracks other than those left by the women.
The companions follow the tracks out into the woods to the west of the village, generally heading in a southwestern direction. Eventually, about an hour our of town, they begin to hear the sound of many people arguing loudly. There is a rise in the terrain, creating a natural windbreak, and this is, apparently, the agreed-upon place to meet. From this distance, it is impossible to make out who is who, but there is clearly a crowd of people. From the sound of it, they are none too happy.
(Blackberry, please explain what you do to cast the sleep spell)
Blackberry will, using his tinker's tools as an arcane focus, remove a bit of wire from his pouch, twist it into the shape of a small insect, whispering to himself as he causes it to start vibrating at a frequency which will induce sleepy-time, and then release it to fly towards Sephek.
You see that Sephekis finishing up whatever he needs to do in order to prep the dogsled for leaving. He suddenly stops, stands up, and appears to be listening intently. Remaining motionless for a moment, he suddenly strikes out with his hands and appears to trap something in them (an insect? a snowflake? Only Sephekand Blackberryknow for sure). Looking at what remains in his hand, he looks around the tents and barrels, as a long, cold blade forms in his other.
First, as quietly and subtly as she is able, she makes some motions with her left hand and whispers, "Furantur ex manes in aere circa me et da mihi modicum vitae." [Eva casts false life for 8 temp HP. @LtG, there is an Audible Distance table on the official WotC DM's screen: "Trying to be quiet" = 2d6 X 5 feet and "Normal noise level" = 2d6 X 10 feet. Given that Eva has total cover from the trees and appears to be ~60 feet from the nearest bunny, er, I mean bandit, I hope she is able to cast the spell without attracting attention.]
Next, she opens her mind in search of Ténèbre, trying to contact the cat telepathically, if indeed her familiar still lives and has managed to keep up with the bandits. [Eva should be able to contact Teb if she is within 100 feet, see find familiar].
Eva is able to contact Teb, who shadowed the bandits and is currently hiding in the woods between you and the crowd. No-one appears to notice your casting.
