Aubin takes off his hat. "I need to know the the whereabouts of Vaelish Gant and any information on Netherese Ruins you know of. It is of the utmost importance. If I can get the information I need then I would be willing to aid this town"

Netherese ruins? He is seeking knowledge of the ancient magocracy! This piques Eva's interest. As she too waits her turn, she makes a mental note of it.
Elk Running positions herself at the wall by the doorway, listening to Aubin's request. She produces a flute and soundlessly fingers the instrument in some unheard melody. The Netherese name is familiar, but her people never kept faith in mages, so the details matter little to her. The need for information about ruins and missing persons does dredge up old memories, and not all of them bad. Some, though, are dark as pitch.
Naraeld steps forward and salutes the sheriff, "A group that might be able to work for mutual benefit sir. I believe they each have their reasons for being here, some seek yourself, others the time of Speaker Shane, if you could aid us in getting an audience?" He steps back and allows the others who wish to each present their case to Markham.
The half-elf places his hand on Blackberry's shoulder and whispers to him as Sabetha offers the floor and Aubin asks his questions. "Looking at that queue, today might not be the best day to remind Markam of the lotteries we hold, unless you know of some practical, well-considered alternative."
Blackberry shivers or maybe cringes at the touch, but nods in response to Naraeld. He has no immediate need for the sheriff's attention, and is content to observe the proceedings and file the information away for later. He nervously turns his snow globe over and over in his forepaws.
Sheriff Southwell gives Aubin a surprised look. “You are not the first to ask about Gant today. And Netherese ruins? Are you with the Arcane Brotherhood? We want no part of your magical scheming here!”
He places his hand on the hilt of his sword, perhaps unconsciously, and casts a glance at Naraeld.
"No I am not with the arcane brotherhood. I seek Gant and any information of why he seeks the Netherese ruins. It would help if you share any information."says Aubin. He pauses a moment "Who else asked about Gant?"
He stands with his hands in clear view seeing the Sheriff's reaction
Naraeld shrugs silently at Markham's glance, as he grips his staff a little tighter - these folk all seemed sound enough, the Sheriff was his boss though and Naraeld wouldn't hesitate to vrain any of them with his staff should the need arise. After Aubin repeats his request, Naraeld injerjects, "Perhaps, Aubin, you could tell us why you seek these things? May be your interest would align with those of Bryn Shander."
"My interest in them has nothing to do with Bryn-Shander except this was the last place my quarry was seen. This is an urgent matter for me. I have staked my life on finding this man. I am a man of my word. If I get the information I need then I will help this town" says Aubin in a serious tone.
Sheriff Southwelllooks at Aubin for a long time and then, rubbing his eyes, says, “You are a bold man and appear to be no fool. Consider my perspective. There has been no summer for two years. My town is scared, paranoid, and on the brink of tearing itself apart. Rumors of all kinds are flying about, many with potential for harm. We are keeping order, but cracks keep appearing. And then a group of outsiders are brought to me, seeking information about a man who tried to seize power here 15 years ago and potentially very powerful magical artifacts. A group who refuse to explain their interest in either Gant or this legendary magical empire. Do you really expect me to help you without any explanation at all?”
Aubin says "I was hired to do a job and I will do it. Don't even ask who my client are, because I will not divulge who they are. I am sincere in helping this town if I get what I need. Tell me what is more important probing my reasons or helping the town of Bryn-Shander?"
"Aubin, you ask for information but provide very little ground to justify the sharing of it. Protecting Bryn Shander and understanding your reasons are currently one in the same.. Your silence about the arcane brotherhood does you no favour. If you are sincere, then sign a cobtract to serve Sheriff Southwell, the payment shall be sharing the information you seek."
"I know nothing of this Arcane Brotherhood beyond Gant was part of it."
(OOC Aubin will wait to see how the sheriff reacts to my persuasion check. If anyone wants to use insight on Aubin it will show he is sincere in what he says)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Sabetha quietly watches the conversation unfold. In fact sheriff Markham Southwell had already offered up some information - that this Vaelish Gant had tried to seize power in Bryn Shander 15 years ago along with powerful magical artifacts. And that someone else, possibly a wizard of the Arcane Brotherhood, had been asking about Gant and about Netherese ruins just earlier today...
Sabetha knows little about any of that, but he wonders if Aubin already was aware. And who he is working for to find his 'quarry'.
Sheriff Southwell says, “Your commitment to client discretion is admirable, although, I believe, a bit foolhardy in this case. It is the Speaker who can answer such questions for you. I can arrange a meeting, but, to be honest, I don’t trust you yet. You appear to be in earnest, but that does not mean you aren’t a threat.
I’ll make you a deal. We are trying to keep it quiet but I believe there is killer running amok in the Ten-Towns. I don’t have the manpower or jurisdiction to investigate, but you may be able to investigate if you are careful. There have been three deaths so far, one inTargos, one in Easthaven, and one here in town, a dwarf glassblower, three days ago. A friend of mine, Hlin Trollbane, has brought the matter to my attention.
Go to Hlin, gather her information, find the killer, bring them to me, and you will get your audience with the Speaker.
Now, is there anything else you need? I’m afraid I’m quite busy”
Aubin restrains from frowning. Another delay. "Do you know how long it would take to travel to the other towns from here? I am pressed for time. Also does Bryn-Shander have a cleric?"
Blackberry hops up and down in excitement. "Tracking down a killer? How thrilling! It's just like one of those detective stories I used to read back in... uh... back in that quite distant village I come from, which nobody's ever heard of, so don't ask. Anyway, I accept!"He holds his snowglobe up to one eye, the refraction of the liquid magnifying his red iris quite large. "Don't be such a grumpy-pants, Aubin, this will be fun. I'm ready to look for... clues!"
Aubin takes off his hat. "I need to know the the whereabouts of Vaelish Gant and any information on Netherese Ruins you know of. It is of the utmost importance. If I can get the information I need then I would be willing to aid this town"

Blackberry snorts under his breath. Humans! What will Auril do for fun if they all just kill each other? he thinks to himself.
