(Sorry folks, been a busy couple of days. I should have just posted my action at the same time. I will act assuming that I haven't seen Blackberry's fireball hit which would be after Naraeld's turn).
Again the half-elven, half goliath stands looking down at the frostmaiden's tool, he whirls his stave around himself defensively, readying it to parry any of the mercenaries strikes. His steps have him circle Sephek anticlockwise as Naraeld knows Sabetha is all too ready to close into melee range with her blinding pace.
Naraeld let's a wry smile creep across his face, "Ah I forgot to mention that I brought friends with me this time. A murderous bastard like yourself can appreciate some underhanded play though, I'm sure. The Frostmaiden shall not have Elk Running today, nor any day. She is protected!"
Action: Dodge
Movement: 10ft North, to create a better flanking angle if Sabetha engages in melee.
Padding the ground like a predator, Eva weaves through the undergrowth and emerges from the trees. [Movement: 10 feet diagonally to the NE through difficult terrain = 20 feet).
Venom in her eyes and streaking forth from her fingers, she directs a green beam of energy at Zara. [Action: ray of sickness ranged spell attack with advantage: 7 or 17: 9poison damage. Zara must make a Constitution saving throw, DC 13. On a failed save, she is also poisoned until the end of Eva's next turn. A poisoned creature has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks.]
Nodding toward the cat, Eva telepathically commands Ténèbre to try again to hide [on Teb’s turn, the familiar should take the hide action, Dexterity (Stealth) check: 22, and move 5 feet north through difficult terrain = 10 feet].
Thereafter, Eva retreats around the north side of the trees. [Movement: 5 feet diagonally to the NW, 5 feet diagonally to the SW = 10 feet, hopefully giving her total cover vis-a-vis Zara and total to half cover vis-à-vis Zara’s bandits and Jotann, depending on their position.]
Naraeldtaunts Sephekas he dodges and dances around his foe, trying to keep the killer's focus on him. Sabetha'sarrow flies true, striking Sephekin the back, but Sephek'sfocus is entirely on Naraeld, looking for an opening in his movement. He finds none. Both blows fail to find purchase as Naraeldsmoothly slips out of the way.
Map!
Band(it) camp:
Zaraand Jotann'sthugs march forward and, raising their maces, brutalize the remaining bandits from Dougan's Hole. Half of the Dougan's Hole contingent go down and the remaining members are gravely injured.
Tebquietly moves forward. As she does, a small bird that had been hiding in the bush suddenly bolts from the shrub, disturbed by her passing.
After the first round of fighting, the remaining Dougan's Hole bandits decide that the fight is too dangerous for them. They Disengage and run for the cover of the trees, moving toward Mallifyrand Eva.
Jotann'seyes flash as he follows the fleeing men and he raises his hand, once again sheath in white-hot flames. With a loud, low boom, a fireball erupts between the two bandits who fled in a more southerly direction. Unfortunately, the explosion catches Eva as well. (Eva, roll a DEX saving throw, please). Screaming in pain, both of the bandits die.
Naraeld sways easily and again taunts his foe, "You have one last chance to surrender. You're outnumbered, and it looks like you can't handle the heat." Hold his staff loosely Naraeld keeps a wary distance, all too aware of what happened last time they faced off. Knowing that Sephek is under more pressure this fight though, he bides his time and waits for Sabetha to close in.
Having stowed her longbow already, Sabetha draws her dwarven longsword. Without turning her head as she lopes forty feet east then southeast towards Sephek Kaltro, she exhorts Blackberry and Aubin: "Nice shooting! Don't let up with the ranged attacks."
When she arrives in a flanking position opposite Naraeld in melee with Sephek, she has no taunts for the ice man. Only a suggestion.
"Tell me true, Sephek. I doubt the Frostmaiden cares whether we know. Torrga and Shander arranged for the raiders to shake down Good Mead, did they not? So Shander could look good standing up to them. What person or group is backing this? Why not tell us? It does not really matter if we know."
Again, the bolts of Aubin and Blackberry fly true, striking Sephek. His attention is divided and he is moving awkwardly, although you don't notice any blood. But he does hear Sabetha's question. He barks a hard laugh. "You seek justice in the wild, little girlie. Justice is a man-thing. It is devoured by the beasts of the wild out here."
Then Sabetha strikes. Using the distraction of the other's attacks and Naraeld's defensive maneuvering, she sees an opening and takes it, striking out with a kick that doubles him over, then swinging around with her long-sword two-handed, cleaning decapitating him. The head rolls on the ground, finally resting with the face up. Sabetha can see the eyes turn to her, not in fear, but in satisfaction and possibly welcome. Then the cold blue eyes flash once and Sephek's whole body begins to rapidly disintegrate. Even the cold does not seem able to stem its dissolution. Dust mixes with the snow and disappears, leaving only a few rags of old, rotten clothing.
Greth'g'karee and Eva:
Unable to escape the fireball, Eva takes the full brunt of it. 31 points of fire damage. (Unless there is something I don't know about, Eva is permadead, which is an interesting prospect for a Reborn.)
That said, Eva also had 16 flasks of oil on her person. The resulting secondary explosion is enormous. Everyone, for two miles around, can hear and see it (this includes anyone outside in Good Mead). All people within 50 ft of Eva take 20 points of fiery oil damage this round (another 20 next round) and 3d10 wooden shrapnel piercing damage. Half if they succeed on a DC 12 Dex save.
Greth'g'kareelooks down at the aftermath of the explosion. Most of Jotann'smen are badly burned and on fire currently, bits and pieces of wood sticking out of them. They are currently screaming in pain and panic. The exception is Zara, who lies still on the ground, where a large limb has impaled her. There is no visible sign of Eva or Teb. He can, just, make out Mallifyrlying unconscious where she stood. Only Jotann, the two children, and one of his men escaped the explosion entirely)
[Eva has 8 temp HP + 14 HP = 22 HP. She takes 31 fire damage from the fireball, 20 X 2 = 40 fire damage from the explosion and subsequent round of burning, & 18 piercing damage from the shrapnel = 89 total damage. Over and out.]
(Vos, I think we cross-posted and there was some internal discussion of a ret-con (due to my poor reading skills) but all has been resolved, I believe.)
Sabetha has almost no reaction to Sephek's final words, facial expression and eventual destruction, her scarf still as black as ink.
((Did Sephek's decapitated head also crumble to dust, or only his body? Could not tell from post 1160.))
WasSephek under the silly delusion that I seek justice? Yesterday, perhaps, but no longer. Mead Hall has taught me well. Ruthless annihilation of wrongdoers is the only way forward. There is never justice, not here in the frozen wilds, nor in the "wilds" of Waterdeep which I fled.
Aloud she responds to Aubin "Undead possibly. Certainly a thrall of the Frostmaiden, animated by her power. If his corpse had not crumbled, we would have needed to burn him to ensure that he does not return. The Frostmaiden delights in preservation, it seems."
She runs towards the dog sled and Elk Running to check on the Eladrin's condition, not having seen her since returning from the Vebeeg cave.
"After Mead Hall, I would not blame any of you for not listening to me. But I suggest we check all the tents quickly in case there is anyone hiding or imprisoned there. But also to investigate whether Torrga has any communications indicating who is the backer for the political power play she and Shander are making. Blackberry, Aubin, Naraeld? I will look after Elk Running. We must act quickly as Torrga and her thugs may arrive soon."
If she finds Elk Running in the same stable condition she had reportedly been in before, Sabetha attempts to take control of the dog sled since that will be he easiest way to transport the Eladrin back to safety. ((Is an Animal Handling check is required?))
