As Torrgais preparing the sled to leave with the party members, Aubinwalks out of her tent, holding the cage. Torrgalooks back at Aubin, frowning. "Well, that's Screecher's cage? Why were you in my tent?" Spinning to look at Sabetha, she asks, "What have you been up to?"
Band Camp:
Greth'g'kareefires two arrows into one of the fleeing bandits. He falls to the ground. The other two do their best to hide among the trees, but they keep running. (Half cover).
"I was searching for any other clues related to Sephek. I know this marking as Zhentarim. What is your connection and I also heard you know more about the raiders who barged in the meadhall"says Aubin
Torrgaclimbs down from the sled. "Oi! Those are my things and if you don't get your grubby mitts off them, we are going to have a problem." She begins to walk toward Aubin, fingering a scimitar at her side.
"Think before your act. As you are surrounded. I think it would be better to explain your connections to these dangerous groups."says Aubin. He lets our a small crackle of red eldritch energy in his hand.
It takes all of Sabetha's will power, already ground down to a nub, not to shout wordlessly in frustration. Recriminations spin in her mind.
Why?! Why in the world are we provoking another fight, hurt and depleted as we are? We were forced to kill Sephek while we could, for our mission, to save Elk Running, and in self-defense as he had attacked Naraeld. I had set it up so Aubin and Blackberry could freely search the tents and waltz away while Torrga gave me, Naraeld and Elk Running a ride back to Tond's, none the wiser. For once it was going to work out well for us!! Now Aubin has given all that away and we are in no man's land. Torrga is almost certainly guilty as sin, but presents no immediate threat, and we have no proof! Working for the Zhentarim is not in itself a crime. Though it should be. And if she takes orders from the Black Network, if that is who is backing her and Shander, then we are in bigger trouble than I thought. Though deep down I think I should have known all along from experience with my faction in Waterdeep...
Grimly, almost vindictively, Sabetha harbors a lingering thought that if it were Aubin alone, she might just take the dog sled with Naraeld and Elk Running and leave Aubin and Torrga to have at it. But Blackberry is in that tent as well, and him, I will never leave to die. That I promise.
Aloud she only replies to Torrga accusation with a non-committal half-truth, looking puzzled that Aubin has appeared: "Don't look at me Torrga. Unlike you, Zhentarim lackey that you are, none of my companions work for me. But if he fights you, he won't fight alone. You said yourself enough blood has been spilt today." Sabetha specifically avoids giving away Blackberry's location. With Torrga walking towards Aubin, Sabetha walks to the front of the dog sled, ready to take the reins, as if to ride away. Trying to distract and discombobulate Torrga and, despite herself, helpAubin in his Intimidation attempt.
She is ready for a fight if needed, and also looks around once more at the surrounding woods for any of Torrga's thugs, come to support her.
If Blackberry can hear what's going on outside the tent, he will search for a way out the back, out of Torrga's view, cutting an opening with his knife if necessary.
Torrga'sface darkens. "I work for no-one but myself. If I contract out for work from someone or another, that is my business, not yours. You've got no proof of anything. Give me the cage and I'll take you and your friends to the healer's hut. My men will be here soon and you don't want to be here when they arrive."
(Sabetha, you see some movement in the tents behind Aubin)
The child with the knife snorts in derision. "I won't kill 'im. I'm just gonna hurt him a bit." He then attempts to plunge the knife into one of the bandit's legs. The bandit rolls out of the way, manages to scramble to his feet, and runs to Mallifyr, attempting to physically hide behind her. "Don't let them near me! I'll tell you anything!"
Aubin can't seem to read Torgga. He then hands the cage to Torgga "Well your rat is dead, must have died from the cold" says Aubin. Lets see what she does with the cage.
An arrow hits the ground between the children and the two bandits. Greth'g'kareecalls down in a cold monotone voice. "They aren't the ones you have to worry about. They can only hurt you if they can reach you. I can reach you anywhere."
To the children he calls, "I am a traveler, now of the band that served Olivessa. I will bring you home safely. Begin to remove all intact belongings from the corpses. All of it. We must not leave any supplies to the enemy who ran, as they will almost certainly return to this place. Gather it in one spot and we will make use of these two prisoners to carry it all."
He then calls to the two 'prisoners' once more, "I will say this only once, I am unharmed and prepared to die for this fight. You either surrender, or we continue the dance until it is done." As he speaks, he pulls his bow to full taught, aiming for the two who are now so nicely lined up.
Amidst the carnage of the mead hall slaughter, through the fight with Sephek and those moments after, Naraeld has lost himself. Twice tonight had he been as close to death as any moment before. His surety in doggedly following what he thought was right, trying to hold to the ideal that justice exists in the wastes, away from the eyes of the larger settlements of Ten Towns. The concept of greater good is something that these very wastes, that the nature of this place seems to fight against.
He mentally recounts the moments of selfish motivation that led them here - Sabetha's provocation at the hall, Aubin ignoring Jotann's threat, Naraeld's own departure to protect Elk Running. It was only when they all saw a need to chase down Sephek that they took a collective action, though he sorely doubted that their reasons were all for Elk Running's benefit. There was no way they could carry on like this - though perhaps that is too farsighted a thought. They were after all only following this path to curry favour with Sheriff Southwell, a means to an end for some, a two-fold duty for himself.
Naraeld stands up, grimacing as he does so, using the sled for support as he hovers protectively near Elk Running's unconscious form. Still harbouring a resentment for Aubin after his flagrant disregard for Mishann's well-being, Naraeld has no intention of putting anyone else at risk. "Aubin, put Torgga's property down and climb aboard the sled. You would do well to think what you are risking should you do something stupid here, and heaven knows what the explosion was. Not only your rabbit skin is on the line, and I for one am too god-damned tired to get into another fight right now. Get aboard and let's hope we can meet up with all our friends back at Tond's." He makes sure to stress the words that might tell Blackberry what is going on and to make his own way back to town, hating to leave one of the more selfless members of the group behind, yet trusting that the harengon will be able to make it back safely.
Aubin gets on the sled. For Pete's sake let the women die. I wonder is rest all they want. From the beginning they seem ready to let anyone go just for rest. Oh well. They are just tools to be used.
Glad to hear Naraeld speak up, Sabetha tries not to let the relief on her face show as Aubin grudgingly boards the sled.
If there is room left on the sled, she will of course stay aboard. If no room left, she will volunteer to lope along beside it, falling behind inevitably. In this specific eventuality, if the sled disappears from sight, Sabetha would stealthily double back through the trees to make sure Blackberry is all right. Otherwise, she can only hope that her harengon friend is able to make it out of Torrga's camp before any of Torrga's thugs return.
As the bandit attempts to hide behind her, Mallifyr whirls around him to stave off potential trickery or deceit, such as a hidden knife to her throat. They engage in a kind of tussle—the bandit desperately trying to evade the advancing children, Mallifyr thwarting the bandit. Whereupon Greth'g'karee’s menacing words reverberate from above, amplified by the snowy basin below.
“But you saw me shoot Jotann…” she calls out to Greth'g'karee as he takes aim at her. “…shut up, Mallifyr!” Mallifyr commands Mallifyr, the second voice uncannily familiar.
Mallifyr falls prone and rolls quickly to the right, arming and aiming her hand crossbow as she does so. [Let me know if I have to roll a Dexterity Acrobatics check or anything else; at the very least, she should fall prone and roll onto her back.] She aims first at the goliath, then at the bandit. She’s in a tussle with herself now.
“Greth'g'karee of the Denna Clan, hunter of the great bear Oyaminartok, have you forgotten me so quickly?” [Hopefully, she won’t have an arrow in her gut before she finishes speaking, as Greth is adept at rolling criticals!] “Hold your fire. I am your ally, and this thug can lead us to whom you were seeking—to the ringleader of these raiders who have manipulated the people of Dougan’s Hole to fall upon the people of Good Mead.”
Torrga accepts the cage from Aubin and her monkey comes running from the tents to leap up on her shoulder. Once Aubin settles himself on the sled, Torrga turns to Sabetha and sneers, “You’ll have to run aside, girl.” She then cracks the whip and the dogs tear off through the snow. Sabetha begins to run after. About two-thirds of the way to Tond’s, there is a large explosion in the woods to the southwest of town. Sabetha is just at the edge of vision from the sled when the explosion happens.
Assuming he exited the back of the tent, Blackberry will dive for cover when the sled goes by. As soon as it disappears from view, he will rapidly (as in 1 minute per tent) look for anything else of value or import in the remaining tents, and then head back to the village. When the explosion occurs, he stops, wondering whether to rendezvous with the others, or investigate the source. Finally, he decides that in his weakened state of health, it would be unwise to go off exploring on his own, and he continues back to town, staying just off the sled path and taking cover if he sees Torrga or any of her band approaching.
As the sled disappears from vision and she hears the explosion, Sabetha is uncertain. What in the world could that have been? It sounded much further off than Torrga's camp. I hope that Jotann did not return to hurl more fireballs at the people or structures of Good Mead, but in truth it sounded further off still. I hope that Eva and Greth'g'karee are all right.Sabetha thinks for a moment.
She finds a spot where there are multiple tracks crossing if she can, then uses them to veer off the path and double back towards the camp, moving well of the path, parallel to it, trying to be stealthy and stay out of view (let me know if rolls are required for any of this). Her goal is to arrive back within eyeshot of Torrga's camp to try to check on Blackberry's well being, though of course she cuts it short if she sees the harengon before that.
Sabetha remains well off the path so (she hopes), she does not meet Torrga on her way back from dropping off the others.
(Blackberry would keep rummaging about while Aubin engaged with the dwarf. And try to be done and out of camp before she returned.)
Torrga's camp:
