"I said poor, not destitute," Sam counters. "We're warriors. Without our tools we are nothing. I may as well pay you with my lifeblood as pay you with my arms or armor. But if you want nothing reasonable in exchange for your knowledge then we're just wasting each other's time..." With that Sam turns his attention to his animals, setting about seeing to their needs and such. Mostly he is acting as if he's totally dismissed the guard and truly has no use for him in order to give someone like Gerwyn or Elthana who is better at negotiations take over...
Muir steps forward "I am Muir. A keeper of the Woods and Loxodon. We are few in the world I come from, in fact I have not seen one of me in my travels but I hear we are out there somewhere. What is it you would like. Perhaps there is something we can get from our home and have it delivered here. Do you have a favorite food or perhaps you have a sweet tooth?"
"poor, destitute... We have both here, there's always something to give, I have no sweet tooth but I do like a drink, 'your world' you say? Definitely not from here then... Hmmm, then you must have something interesting on you" The captain leans against the wall and smiles a little at the incredulity of the situation. "Another world, I never thought I'd see the day, and warriors on a suicide mission nonetheless..." He stands in thought and then glares a little at Griff, "if I do this then I absolve any blame for their actions upon yourself and Akiin. If any of this gets back to Vox Tontritor, its on your head. Got it!?"
"We're responsible for our own actions, sellsword. Or is honor something you do not have here either?" Sam cannot help himself but turning from his animals and spitting out at the pathetic guard. "Help us and be a friend to me and my fellows or don't and don't. It is a simple enough choice."
Gewyn drops down and nearly puts a calming hand on Sam's shoulder, but pulls back. "Easy, easy. If you are in the mood for something a little exotic, an otherworldly brew you could accurately say, I may have something that sparks your interest here." Gewyn pulls out the stolen bottle from the treasury and rolls it over in his hands to display the label.
"Now, this could get you good and proper drunk. Or, it could be a bargaining tool. Now much as wine improves with age, if you hang onto this until we've accomplished our task here, racked up some exploits, left rumors in our wake, next thing you know you have a gift from some famed interplanar travelers on your hands... Sharing a drink with that much history is sure to make you friends. Or lady friends. Your call."
Vin watches the negotiations and smiles at the efforts of his friends as the guard appears to come around.
"I think you have made your choice", he says to the Captain. "And we appreciate it. You will certainly enjoy the wine I am sure. But I wonder how far you would be willing to go for us now, and whether your help is in an official capacity or not", he muses. "If you were to have one of the dragonfolk, they would be particularly grateful if we were to effect a release, for example. Would that be within the bounds of your help?", he asks staring up at Bullwing curiously.
Bullwing takes the bottle and holds it up to observe the liquid through the glass, "'sellsword' is an interesting word. Isn't that exactly what you were just offering Sam Hall..." He mutters as her takes the cork out and gives the bottle a sniff.
"Ooooh this is new! This will do very well than you, you've bought your information." He gives a greedy smile at Gewyn "There's a ruined healers house on the under side about an hour's walk from here, the locals have been complaining that the squatters there have gone missing... Any one who goes in doesn't come out, of course it's likely just a kobold nest, we have a dragonkin imprisoned here who has been muttering about the place being haunted by ghosts. Superstitious folk over there you see. I'll tell you that much. " He looks to vin and listens to the question with some slight amusement, suddenly a second captain Bullwing appears next to vin and leans in close whispering something into the boys ear before disappearing once more "...So no, no official capacity I'm afraid. There's likely a damn good reason why Vox Tontritor doesn't want us going to the broken isles and I'll have no official reports out there that I'm assisting people going for whatever reason, it's above my pay grade, you understand. This 'wine' is enough for the information, but I'm not so easily swayed to let 'poor, not destitute' folk come wandering in off the streets and just take a prisoner with them... though I'll give your guard here directions and you can go. A deal is a deal, BUT if you get any more of this drink in your travels you come by here and I'll help you out with what you need. Hmm? Depending on whether you survive that is." He chuckles looking around the group, though the amusement doesn't quite reach his eyes.
Elthana stares at her friends as Muir and Gewyn just pull out what they stole from her Treasury and offer it up to this guard. It renders her speechless in the gall that they would do that, and she's impressed as well. She makes note though not to take them places where things should not be taken. Shaking her head she listens to what the guard says about the ruined healers house.
Then looking to Griff, "do you know the place he talks of? Can we go there now? Time is of the essence."
“No… No, it’s not.” Sam answers dismissively. “Not in the least.” Sam is preoccupied with his animals for any more response, however. This is a deliberate ignoring of the good captain so that Sam doesn’t cave to his inner voice telling him to just smack him a hood one already…
“Couldn’t someone just point to the damned islands and let us make our own way there?” Sam asks Molly in a grumble. Ògra yawns out a bit of a roar in response. The brown bear is the only one who still seems to be paying attention to the negotiations.
Vin is a little startled by the duplicate appearing right next to him to whisper in his ear, but as tries to cover his momentary surprise by nodding at what it is saying.
"Well, it was worth an ask", he says after the Captain is done. "Do you see much of Vox Tontritor? Where exactly does she live?", he asks, his curiosity getting the better of him. "I mean, does she ever walk amongst you?".
Hearing Elthana is eager to leave, and Sam muttering something to his giant goat, he adds "Perhaps now is not the time, best we get moving".
The captain takes the second bottle from Muir, and in response for the additional gift gives Griff a detailed direction in Auran. Griff nods his head to Elthana, "now I am being aware, so we can be leaving"
When Vin asks his question, the captain snorts a little derisively, "nooooo no, she resides in the thunder, nobody sees her, but she's always above and apparently always watching... She gives orders for the lands to each djiin, not that Gojiin has much of a hold on this place..." Griff this time gives the derisive snort and gets himself a scowl from Bullwing in return, but Griff is already on his way out, beckoning the others to follow.
Gewyn offers an apologetic shrug to Elthana in response to her bewildered stare, but when they are out of earshot of Bullwing's earshot, he leans in and mutters, "Oh come on, is your opinion of my honesty so low that you think I'd just steal anything that wasn't nailed down? I offered him something I picked up back at the market, and changed its presentation. A little illusion work, if you will. Yes, I do realize now that I am defending my honesty by revealing my lie..."he chuckles.
Following Griff, Sam and his menagerie are the last to walk away from the captain. Molly, bringing up the rear, pauses... And squats. The Giant Goat drops a giant goat loaf, then prances quickly back up to a chuckling Orc. "Nice meeting you, captain!" Sam calls out with a halfhearted wave without looking back.
"Well, let's see. We had roughly 320 hours to complete our mission, we were on Akiin for about 12 hours, then spent 3 and a bit days travelling so that's about 75-80 hours, and we've been on Gojiin for a handful of hours walking. I'd say we have roughly 220 hours remaining? Man, we lost 100 hours fast."
Elthana stares at Gewyn as he chuckles. "You know... exhaustion doesn't look good on you. Nice try, thief."and she smirks heading off with the rest, hoping this next stop isn't too far away.
"Hm, so we will likely need to allocate another 80-85 hours for getting back to the portal. Ok, I get the rush now", Vin works as out he leaves the room alongside Elthana.
Neferox pads alongside him, eyeballing the guard Captain as they leave.
Griff raises a feathered eyebrow and stifles a cawing laugh as Molly leaves a steaming gift in the waiting room, several duplicates of captain Bullwing appear and walk off down the hall calling out to other guards, likely for some kind of clean up before disappearing into thin air.
As the group start walking out of the run down headquarters and back onto the streets, Griff pipes up, "once we are finding kobolds nest, you can be taking whatever mounts they are having and they should be finding their way back without having issues... What do you think the captain was meaning when he saying the healers house is haunted?"
Muir brushes off his cloak and follows behind Griff answering matt of factly "Folks that don't understand the true happenings of an event or place point to the supernatural as the cause. They don't understand the ways of nature and conjure up grand ideas of ghosts and hauntings. Can the undead be a cause, certainly, but there is usually a more natural reason for whatever is occurring."
