"Nivara was driven and motivated from a young age, she devoted herself to learning magics and soon became an accomplished witch tapping into the shadow realm that is the ancestral home of all shadar-kai, with shadow magics came the teachings of death, the raven queen and the origins of our ancestry. Death and the worship of the queen is something that Nivara understood. That is until myself and my twin brother were born. For the short time that my brother was alive Nivara doted on the both of us, long with our mother Mori. But then the queen took my brother away... Nivara, in her grief became single minded, she went out in to the world and tried to find the magics to either bring him back or save the rest of her family from an inevitable fate. That is when she stumbled upon a shrine to nectyran in your plane. She brought back with her clues to the fate of nectyran and a curse, a curse which she shared with myself, my mother and her own husband Sergor. Under her hunt we found our way to the portal to Thaeir. She helped us build a home around it but soon left. That is when she must have also left behind a failsafe, a body to be awakened upon her death to carry her soul forth and continue her task. You, Elthana.
After a few years without word Sergor and I also came to Thaeir to search for her. Sergor became embroiled in hijacking the political and financial landscape here for his own gain, having started a city around his home back on your plane it seemed he was eager to make deals back and forth. I however went looking for Nivara, and I found this place. They distrusted me at first but it has been a few thousand years and now I am a trusted ally.
But I learned of what Nivara did here before she disappeared. She met with Lumithor and asked for entry to the shadowfell. She was denied and seemed unwilling to take down a dragon by herself, so instead she took her anger out on a nearby city, levelling buildings turning the dead, corrupting the very nature of the worship of the natural that the people here hold, she wanted to bait out lumithor but he remained true to his duty and guarded the gate to the shadowfell. Then she disappeared. Scouts and witnesses back then say she went to the thunder, the home of Vox Tontritor. That she is the reason the Vox then decided to strike lumithor down.
Many rumours spread that Nivara must have lied to the Vox or tricked her into killing lumithor, the giant sorceresses own son. Others think that Nivara was killed there and the vox thought lumithor a betrayer to the cause.
Either way that's when the rumours began, and we're supported by the djinni and their guard, that's when all dragon kin and the residents of the now broken isle were branded as betrayers along with lumithor, a conspiracy was drawn up that we wanted to open the gate and release Nectyran, but that was not our wish at all. It was Nivara's.
We thought her dead, she hasn't been seen for nearly 4 thousand years. But Muir has given me evidence to suggest she lives still, but I don't know where, I don't know why she seems to have stopped, or why she hasn't returned to try opening the gate to the shadowfell." Hector finishes rather sad and out of breath.
Griff grunts and strains obviously uncomfortable with this narrative. Before blurting out, "how are you being so old, thousands of years you are saying, yes? How is this and yet you are saying you worship the raven queen, you are being an aberration, an affront to the ways no? Nd how could one woman sway the Vox Tontritor!? This is blasphemy is it not? Has this whole island gone mad?"
Muir decides to add his two sense since it's been a minute since he has done so "Your not being her Elthana and Morris' warning leads me to believe she is alive. She visited Vox and suddenly Lumithor dies....These two seem to be connected. Which leads me to 2 possible ideas....the dead portal, Nivara was the last to go through it trying to reach the shadowlands or....When was the last time some one saw Vox?"Muir looks at Hector and Griff
"I have to confess, I am confused by the timescales involved here as well. How can you be four thousand years old? Even with time running at different speeds, that would still be one thousand in our time right?", Vin interjects. "And how powerful was Nivara to be able to do the things you mentioned?".
He looks to Elthana, "Also, are we assuming you were woken by an incident that caused Nivara's soul to need a new body? Maybe like what happened to me. If she disappeared all that time ago, and we assume that is when the incident happened, how old are you?".
He looks a bit uncertain, "My memory is a bit fragmented still, so I might have got the wrong end of all those sticks mind".
"none but the Djiini are seeing the Vox, and only by way of their communication tables" Griff offers.
Hector nods in agreement, and takes Muir's propositions. "I've been pondering on that possibility since you mentioned it on the journey over... The shattering left this isle in disarray for many years, it would have been easy for a lone operative like Nivara to sneak back to the isle and through the shadowfell gate, but why wouldn't she spring Nectyran out or come back out herself after finding the key to immortality herself as was her want? It doesn't make sense...
Bit Vin's questions are appropriate, knowing when Elthana woke exactly gives us a time scale for when something changed with Nivara.
For the clone spell to have succeeded Elthana would have gained all the memories and the soul of Nivara upon Nivara's death, the fact that Elthana is a different aspect of Nivara, so much that they are different people entirely, something went wrong..."
Muir decides that now is the time to mention the being he has seen in different pieces of lore "I have seen a figure throughout the different realms while doing my research....either stories or paintings....I cannot find the name of this person mentioned in any of the lore but only they have appeared in different realms.....in one painting this person looked like they should be in the fae realm but it was a painting of the fire realm.....Perhaps she is traversing through the realms and has lost enough of her that it woke Elthana....This of course is all conjecture...if I could have access to the different factions histories....." Muir trails off looking at the others realizing he bagn rambling again
Elthana listens to Hector, having heard some of this already but not all. "Sergor was more interested in the politics and getting his city literally off the ground than he was in finding his wife?" She is silent again and thinks about how this one woman, driven though she may be has changed the course in this plane forever. Has affected so so many lives and from her vantage point, all for the worst. But why? Because her brother died?
"Wait, Muir has given you evidence that Nivara still lives??" She looks at the loxodon, hurt in her eyes, "but you haven't told us?"
Turning to Griff, "Please, calm down as we try and get through all of this. I'm sure they are not lies. As Hector stated, they were all cursed."
Surprised by the question from Vin, "Me? I have been awake about 75 years I believe? No wait.. I've been awake for 25 years, 50 years were implanted as fake memories." Turning back to Hector, "Anything happen around 25 years ago?"
As Muir starts talking, it starts sounding like mush in her brain. Just too much to take in (Charlie Brown adults speaking here lol)
Muir answers Elthana and Vin "Young Vincent the women had a mask on and I could not tell who she was. Dear Elthana I did not keep anything from you. Morris told us you are not ready to face her meaning she is alive, or at least I believe, because you have not become her. I am trying to connect the dots. I promise I am not keeping anything from you or at least not on purpose."
"Alright, alright... Not surprising but this is all beyond me. I'm a punch someone in the throat because they're talking too much sort of guy, not one to sit around and listen to the guy guy," Sam complains after he has been listening long after he has gotten lost.
"So this Nivara was all learning and testing into this shadow real but otherwise all sugar and spice and everything nice until one day her kid brother, Hector's twin, kicks it. This sends her on a tear to learn the secret to immortality or such. On this tear she found the portal from our.. Realm, plane, world, whatever... to here. You all built a house around this here portal. So... Hector, was this home in mid-air? Was the portal in the air and so the house was built around it? If so, how was the house built in midair? 'Cause shit in midair, and no longer wanting to be so, is the impetus for us really being here right now." Sam looks to Elthana at this and softens a bit. "Not that we don't have more we want to find out or even that the more can wait, but if you know how to keep things midair without this load stone bone stuff...." Sam then trails off to see if there is an answer. ((Probably not as helpful a one as Sam is hoping but hey, fingers crossed.))
"And if the home was built in midair, does this mean the treasury was built around your house? Is all of Northmorrah founded where it is because Nivara found this random portal??"
"And then Nivara, still on her tear, did all this destroying and such? All because Hector's twin died?"
Sam really doesn't care about the politics of this realm but is finding himself needing to care more about this Nivara tantrum because it obviously affects Elthana. He is quite frankly a bit dumbstruck that it's possible her family is responsible, in a large sense, for all of his known world. Not the making of the land and air and such but where the cities are built and all... Amazing.
"25 years ago would be 100 years here, nothing big happened that I'm aware of" hector begins as people begin speaking up around him, "I'm not sure what or who you saw in the archives and pictures but I doubt Nivara would have appeared in anything about the Fae or Hellfire realms, her focus after finding that shrine in the material plane was solely Nectyran god of immortality..." He offers to Muir.
As Sam poses his speculations and concerns, Hector sighs a little, he sees the need for a quick solution even if there isn't one to be had. "I must not have been clear, the home and eventual city that sergor created was surrounding the portal to Thaeir, not the other way around, Sergor is the founder of the city you call home, the one under threat of his falling castle right now... He must have gained the lodestone to elevate his district after the soldiers came to desecrate Lumithor's corpse the first time, before this isle was made a forbidden zone...
It gets confusing because it goes back so far on two different timelines, but the crux of the matter is this. Sergor and Nivara are that old because of the curse bestowed on them by Nivara, one that she found when plundering a shrine to Nectyran, they are both vampires, as is Mori and as was myself before I met the good witch and she alleviated my situation. If there's one thing I want to do before my, now mortal, life comes to an end, it is to find and stop my sister... Stop her from destroying anything else in an attempt to save me. Elthana is the first bit of good news I've had toward that goal in a long time, and that's why I am going to try my damnedest with the elders on your behalf. But Nivara is also the reason that Elthana may have to stay out of sight before I can at least prepare them."
In response to Elthana's plea Griff takes a breath and listens to the response of Hector, Griff still appears anxious to even be on this isle knowing that his presence here will likely be the end of him in one way or another. After Hector's explanation the Aarakocra merely repeats the word 'vampire' rolling it around his beak and trying to understand the thing that is abhorrent to all he believes in.
"Yes, I meant he built the city on our side of the portal..." Sam mumbles quietly but tries not to interrupt. As Hector goes on Sam comes to figure that the portal wasn't originally in midair when it was discovered and he supposes that makes sense - easier to find and build a home around something at ground level and raise it all later, he supposed. But how would elevating the Treasury back home help with soldiers trying to desecrate Lumithor's corpse, which he imagines is solely an Thaeir proble...
"I'm sorry, Vamwhatnow?" Sam blurts out, shocked. He looks to Elthana immediately and knows, just knows, that he has seen her during the daytime. And he is absolutely sure she couldn't have hidden fangs from him.... "You are not! Are you??"
"why do you think I looked in her mouth back when we were fighting?" Hector says slightly disheartened, "Nivara would never give up vampirism, and when Muir tried telling me that Elthana wasn't Nivara.. well that was the one surefire way to know." He sees Sam's lingering look to Elthana obviously wanting to hear the answer from her and not hector and so he sighs, hoping to have helped the situation but instead shuts up, sits down and waits.
Vin is also taken aback by the news that Nivara is a vampire, but not just her.
"Are you saying that Sergor is a vampire? That Hog is right now being held by a vampire? That there is a vampire on the High Council?", he asks as he looks to the bag that they have been using to communicate back to the material plane.
As Muir reassures Elthana that he has not held anything from her, she smiles, knowing the big lug was telling the truth as much as he knew.
She listens as Sam tries to understand and Hector attempts to clear things up... but then she blanches when he tells them all her family are vampires. She sits down hard, and with her elbows on her knees she holds her face in her hand. Without looking up, "No, Sam I am not a vampire. I never have been... at least that I am aware of. I'm sorry I never said anything, I guess I was protecting Mori. My mother."
Hearing Vin she looks up, "Yes, he is." She is sure Hog is fine, but doesn't add anything more as she didn't need an argument to start. Not really wanting to talk about it, she gets up and walks over to Muir, "What are you going on about?"
"No... obviously not you. But... Wow. How did you be you surrounded by..." Sam kind of stutters. "You're mother too? Just how much of the Treasury is... infected?"
(Intelligence roll to see just how much Sam knows about vampires = 8 sooooooo.... not much. They're scary and spooky and bad news.)
"Just a shame we couldn't send a big bag a sunshine back through the bag for him," Sam says mostly to himself, then looks to Elthana and hopes she didn't hear it as he doesn't want to talk any more bad about her family right now than he needs to.
"I'm sorry Elthana, getting everything out on the table is the only way to really get across the point of how far Nivara has gone, how far she's willing to go..."
Muir's thought process gets slightly louder as people realise that he's basically having a one sided conversations with himself, but neither Hector, Griff or the two dragonborn really pay him much notice (not that either dragonborns understand a word of what is or has been said around this table). At Vin's words Hector loses composite for a moment and let's out a sharp laugh before stopping himself, "sorry sorry, I'm just imagining sergor on a council... that pompous prick having to deal with other people's problems I bet he hates every second of it."
Vin goes silent, in a bit of shock. He wonders if the rest of the council know about Sergor, but is reluctant to ask.
Instead he turns to more immediate concerns.
"So you are saying that either Elthana needs a disguise, or she can't come to the meeting with the elders?", he asks Hector. "I have to agree with Sam here, unless the elders take no interest in the comings and goings here, surely they must know about Elthana's presence. Unless of course all this happened so long ago, the common folk have no idea what Nivara looks like?".
"If Elthana doesn't come, Neferox can stay with her", he suggests doubtfully, not really happy at excluding Elthana from the meeting.
