In search of fame, wealth, glory, or even just a place to call home, four heroes journey into the Elsir Vale. This dangerous frontier has tested many an adventurer, but as the movement of monsters and hobgoblin alike seem to become coordinated and attacks against travelers appear less random, could our heroes have found themselves in a war?

I will make every attempt to post once a day, but in a multiplayer game, it can be hard. I will do my best to keep things rolling, but I am a reactive DM. I will tell you the state of the world and you will do things and I will react. If things in the thread stay quiet, the world stays paused. Players must have the drive to make things happen! Players must be clear and specific in what they want to do! It's good to speak in character about what you want to do, but I need definitive action to do any follow up posting. So for example, 4 characters standing around going "I wonder what's in this room" does not indicate to me that I will open the room and put you in there. What will help me is "I wonder what's in this room? We all speak to each other. Okay, I am checking the door for traps and if safe, I will open the door."
Inspiration is pooled and its held as a party resource. Whenever the party or a member of the party accomplishes a minor or major goal, the pool gains 1 point of inspiration. Anyone may use a point of inspiration after they see their result. You can spend any number of points on skill checks, thus making them over and over. However, you must indicate in your post that if you fail you want to use inspiration -- that way I can tell you to reroll. Depending on circumstances, I will make the rolls for you if it will move things along. Example of minor goal: get the NPC to tell me what I want to know, example of major goal: killed the guy who killed my dad.
If a character wants to help another character out, that is possible, but the character doing the HELP action must justify how whatever they do helps in roleplay. You do not need to wait for me to verify if the advantage applies. But if you guys do weird things or nonsensical things to try to justify, I reserve the right to revoke this privilege.
If you think a skill check is warranted, you may roll it. There is a chance I will ignore the skill check and resolve as I see fit -- for example if I decide you have an auto-success or an auto-failure. I will let you know when I overrule your roll attempt.
Combat:
Inspiration cannot be used in combat.
In combat, creatures whose turns happen one after another will go at the same time. What does this mean? If Minsc rolls a 15 in initiative and his ally Boo rolls a 12 and there are no enemies or uncontrolled NPCs taking a turn between them, then Minsc and Boo may post in any order. They may also coordinate and intermix their actions, bonus actions, and movement. So if the players wanted, Boo could run up to an enemy and use the HELP action. Minsc can use the ATTACK action. Boo can follow up by drinking a potion. Essentially, you share your turn with your allies and controlled NPCs. Enemies will not function in this way and will take their turns in the order of what was rolled. However, I reserve the right to group like-enemies together in big combats.
The following actions are now just bonus actions: Hide, Shove, Dip (as in dipping your weapon in fire or acid or something to deal extra damage potentially), Drink a Potion. If somehow this ends up being an issue for some classes (such as a major boon to a class is hide as a bonus action, see: rogue, we can cross that bridge when we get there)
Administering a potion to another creature requires an action, and in the case of your usual everyday healing potions, you can throw healing potions up to 15 feet with 100% accuracy, no check needed.
Roleplaying: (not really rules but letting you know the vibe)
Please use third person perspective. Tense doesn't matter to me.
You are free to embellish environments to a certain extent such as looking at portraits, stating colors on walls, or other "window dressing" type things. Anything substantial would need to be asked for. You are free to roleplay with each other as well, but try not to have me come online to see 20+ messages!
No sexual violence or violence against children. Mostly for my own sanity. If you have limits feel free to let me know, such as you don't like spiders, you don't like gorey details, etc.

17 - Jorr 15 - Valeria & Mae & Kiersa & Iravon 0 - Many Headed Beast (-60 HP)
The onslaught from our heroes, brimming with magical energy as well as martial prowess has felled not one, but two heads of this many headed beast! As it's second head goes limp, dead, the other three heads roar with fury. It reaches out to attack --
Kiersa - 24, 11 piercing damage. (Ignore whatever the creature did before, I applied Iravon's protection disadvantage to this attack -- assuming that is fine.)
Mae - First Attack: 24, 10 piercing damage. Second Attack: 28, 11 piercing damage.
It becomes clear to Iravon his attempt to command this beast to face him and only him has fallen on deaf ears. In fact, the many headed beast seems to have its eyes fixated on Valeria as it postures and moves to strike her.
Kiersa and Iravon, read the spoiler:
You can tell that next turn, every single head will strike at Valeria! This creature, a hydra you figure, has incredible reach. Even from where Valeria is flying, if the creature climbs up the bridge, it will be able to reach her. And, perhaps fairly importantly, if any of you don't take care when moving out of its reach, it will attack you with one of its 3 heads.
Jorr, the old man takes a pop shot at the creature with his trusty crossbow: 21, 7 piercing damage. "I ain't seen this god d--- beast 'fore. Beshaba's teets, these d--- gobbos bring naught but misery."
Notes for this combat, if you move away, even if you are at least 10 ft away from the hydra, without disengaging, it will attack you. If you are moving away without disengaging, please include it's attack of opportunity on you in the bottom of the post so we can see how far you get really. Formula is d20 + 8, d10 + 5 damage.
The hydra will do this 3 times before it runs out of opportunity attacks.

Seeing Mae fall to the creature's attacks, Kiersa tries to strike back with increased vigor. (Using Action Surge for one additional action, which she uses to Attack in addition to her normal Attack.) (Longsword Attack: 19 Damage: 11) (Longsword Attack: 18 Damage: 9) (Longsword Attack: 10 Damage: 13) (Longsword Attack: 14 Damage: 14)
"We need to keep this thing back! It's going after Valeria!" Kiersa shouts.
His words doing nothing to distracted the creature, Iravon bellows "Valeria! Get away! Fly up!" He could only hope she took his instructions and followed them in time, or this would end in disaster. The bard had already been felled, he prayed not mortally - although his oath was to Valeria it would still be his failure if Maevla was killed.
Moving to her still body, which is breathing increasingly shallow breaths, he prays to Bargrivyek, "This human is an honourable warrior, in her own way. Don't let her courage lead to her death here, to the jaws of a mindless beast." Placing one hand on her chest and one on her forehead, he releases almost all of his healing energy into her. Always hold something back, just in case.

"NOO, MAE!"Valeria calls out from above, seeing the rows of razor sharp teeth of the many-headed monstrosity tear into her brave bard companion. Hearing her other companions warnings, she hesitates, but as Kiersa bravely throws herself at the hydra, blade flashing, and Iravon seemingly trying to save Mae, Valeria reluctantly ascends further up (to about 50 feet above the causeway now) carried by her winged boots. She then again calls upon the divine powers of her goddess, uttering celestial words while making a quick pattern in the air with the fingers of one of her slender hands, the other hand touching her amulet to send another fiery star from the skies, roaring down to blossom with a low roar into an explosion of flame engulfing the three remaining snake-like heads in a divine inferno.
(Cast flavored Fireball 33 Dex save 15 for half damage, centered to catch the three remaining heads if possible.)

Mae groaned and coughed after the healing power coursed through her, a heavy pulse of energy bringing some life back to her and making some of her more grievous wounds close up. She looked about in a bit of a daze as her companions rushed back into battle against the many-headed best, still reeling a bit from that initial assault. She got to her feet and took her time acclimating to the scene and trying not to be sick. She gave Iravon a small smile of thanks and a half wave at Valeria in the sky. She then began disengaging herself from the beast for a moment and moved down the bridge a ways.
Iravon clasps Mae by the hand and helps her to her feet. He doesn't return her smile, instead looking her in the eyes and saying gently but firmly. "Stand, and fight." He then turns back towards the monster and readies himself again for battle.
(Sorry Mae, I think you misunderstood my update to your request, yes you can have your full action. I'll accept you as having disengaged and moving away as far as possible.)
The hydra sees that Valeria the source of it's ire is out of range permanently. It howls in anguish and deftly begins to retreat back into the murky waters. It makes it to the center of the river and submerges about 5 ft.
