Jaylan jumps on his feet by the impact of Nefire's axe on the lock of the chest. He had been lost in his thoughts for the last minutes as the rest explored the room. He tries to not look startled but he knows that its too late for that.
Nefire's great axe indeed takes the lock off of the chest... It in fact takes the front of the chest off of the chest. Perhaps a smaller axe would have been sufficient. And more precise. Alas, what is done is done... Nefire please roll 1d8 to determine how much of the breakables break. THEN roll 1d8 that number of times, rerolling duplicates, to see what was damages beyond use... ((I feel so mean... lol))
Inside the chest are some of the necessities of life for when spending time in a mine - A bedroll, a good book, an ipad (ok, not an ipad) some paper, ink and quills. Most of this is old and rotted and worthless now. Some items do seem to have, or largely have, survived the years. Inside you find the following... Or their remains, depending on Nefire's rolls.
Breakables:
Spell Scroll - Locate Object
Spell Scroll - Healing Word
Potion of Climbing
Potion of Healing
Potion of Healing
Potion of Healing
Rejuvenating Draft
Aged Goodberry Wine
Non Breakables:
Embroidered Silk Handkerchief
Black Velvet Mask with Silver Stitching Embroidery
Brass Mug with Jade Inlay
Deck of hand painted playing cards
Three bone dice with various colored flakes of jewels for pips
Small Mirror with a painted wooden frame
Small pile of various gemstones: Obsidian, Turquoise, Agate, Zircon, Onyx, Quartz, etc… (400gp-ish value total)
40 gold piece, 189 silver and 212 copper…
Assuming there is no squabbling or significant delay in dividing up the loot, or otherwise deciding what to do with it, you are able to continue on exploring the caves without incident. Unless you randomly decide to exit now, you are heading west and then northerly to explore unexplored parts. Nefire, Jaylan and Dabbert (I think?) explored this way a little bit but not much before the secret entrance was found and they returned. Five or six miles of tunnels are explored and backtracked through when they turn out to be dead ends. The tunnels are gloomy and oppressive as was all the ones behind you and frankly it is getting a bit stifling... The party encounters two more ghouls, each individually and in time to not be surprised and they were quickly dispatched with little hassle. Likely you'd have been turned around and lost several times and ready to tear your hair out, or one another's, but Nefire's sense of direction is impeccable and you are all confident you only traversed tunnels more than once when absolutely necessary... Still, it is almost a relief when the sound of work is heard.
For yes, eventually you hear it... It is subtle and almost lost in the shuffling of your feet at first but eventually the tink, tink, tink is undeniable and you are pretty sure it is the sound of a pickaxe... Or maybe several. The sound is traveling a bit, bouncing back and forth through the tunnels to your ears, and so it's a bit hard to tell how far ahead it is... But surely no more than 50 or 100 feet?
A marching order, please? The tunnel here is wide enough to go two side by side but that is up to you all... And any preparations before you advance?
Dabbert moves up to the front of the group, trying to keep a unified front with Nefire as she leads through through the dark tunnels and winding passages. He keeps his head tilted in the dark, using his peripherals to scan for movement, while also providing his ears with the opportunity to scan where his vision cannot.
Krumar sauntered over to the chest while the others were getting ready to leave and took a gander....that wasn't the only thing he took.....He took with him
Embroidered Silk Handkerchief
Black Velvet Mask with Silver Stitching Embroidery
Deck of hand painted playing cards
Three bone dice with various colored flakes of jewels for pips
Small pile of various gemstones: Obsidian, Turquoise, Agate, Zircon, Onyx, Quartz, etc… (400gp-ish value total)
"I suppose if no one wants these little tchotchkes, I will take them" He says to no one in particular and not loud enough for those leaving to hear. Once he has the handful of things, he gets up and follows everyone else bringing up the rear.
Nefire looks at the mess she made with her axe. The broken bottles and smashed scrolls. If anyone is looking at her face, she is decidedly of two minds about this and finally indifference wins over as she shrugs, "Well, maybe one of those cool handaxes would be better next time."
She picks up the potions of climbing and healing, showing them around, "Anyone want to carry these? Else I can." if no one speaks up, she'll add them to her inventory. She picks up the rejuvenating draft and hands it to Raevyn without a word.
She sees Krumar starting to pick over the other items and smiles. She leans in and grabs the brass mug and raises it as in a toast, "This'll be mighty useful once we finish!" As Krumar takes the gems, she raises an eyebrow, "Guess the orc needs some pretties to compete with pretty boy over there."she nods her head towards Dabbert.
But as Krumar takes the mask, she reaches over and takes it from his hand (let me know if we need to contest) then also gives this to Raevyn. "You seem to have an affinity for masks." is all she says as she hands it to the doctor.
Looking at all the coins, "anyone want to carry the coins? I can if no one else wants to."
Then she'll head out of the room and scurry up next to Dabbert, "You sure ain't leading without me!"
Krumar laughs at Nefire's jest "Pretty boy indeed....we all must be good at something....I suppose. Actually the masks are for Dabbert for when he's around children...I don't want the kids frightened by the sight of him"
"For Dabbert?" Nefire looks around at the party and her eyes land on the crazy old man, Syl, "Um... he might need a mask so the kids aren't frightened." and she chuckles to herself.
Krumar grumbles but doesn't fight Nefire over the mask. He doesn't want to lose a hand or have his bread and butter mangled and have to actually need a mask
Syl leans around the corner and shouts back into the room. "Aye! What say we get back to whatever the Hells it was we were supposed to be doing in here? And then get out of here, eh? I'm freezing all my tips off, here."

Dabbert smiles at Krumar, having an idea of what he's said (or at least thinking so), and then nods at Nefire.
"Wouldn't uh...even think about it." He says, in regard to leading without her. He reaches up at least once to rub his forward and squint. "Still don't like this place. Giving me uh...bad vibes. Ever feel like you're in a nightmare but you're wide awake?"
Krumar writes that line down in his little journal and begins to scribble some ideas for songs...he begins to hum and sing "Ever feel like you're in a nightmare but you're wide awake? Lost in the shadows, trying to escape. Dreams turn to echoes, hearts start to break. In this waking darkness, a chance we'll take."
"Ah, keep your tips on, ol man!" Nefire shouts back to Syl and at Dabbert's question, she stares at him.. to a point it is a bit uncomfortable then responds, "No. What ever do you mean?"
While she wasn't upset about the loss of fragile vials and scrolls, Raevyn would make a note to consider bringing some lock picking tools with them for the future. As she's making her note, she's handed a rejuvenating draft by Nefire. Then as she's noting that new item, the doctor's then gifted the mask. Her cheeks do feel a bit warm as she dips her head in appreciation as she accepts it.
"I trust coin to be safe in your care Miss Nefire." Raevyn would nod. She wasn't opposed to Nefire carrying some extra potions on her either. It was a logical fit.
Just as she had a couple times before, Raevyn would activate her eyes of the grave. Then with a click of her tongue, the doctor falls in line with the others, Pauwau at her side.
Is it Nefire and Deb up front, Krumar, Syl and Jaylan in the middle and then Raevyn and PauWau bringing up the rear?
Any last preparations before advancing towards the sound? Just advancing as a group or someone scouting ahead to get a peek first?
Jaylan feels the desire to be more protected and he feels a chilling breeze coming from his weapon and his armor and skin appear to be covered by a thin layer of frost.
As you all get closer you hear more distinctly the working of tools - It sounds like pickaxes and shovels with an occasional grunt of someone working hard. The tunnel you are following dips lower for 20 or 30 feet and then inclines back up for a while. The effect of the climb means that as the ground starts to even out once more you find yourself suddenly very near another large chamber in the mines. Before you even finish the slight climb and can peek into the room Raevyn is aware that there is undead ahead... You are about ten or twenty feet from the entrance of the chamber and thus cannot see full inside but from what you see there is life... And as the good doctor knew, unlife.
Straight ahead you see a zombie shuffling around with a shovel in hand. Beyond them there is what appears to be a pit or a sink hole of some kind. Beyond, just at the edges of your vision (perhaps beyond, but who's counting?) is a ghoul and another zombie. Unsurprisingly they all appear to have once been orcs but what else would you expect in this region? The cave walls are cutting off your vision to the left and the right and you'll need to get to at least the opening of the room to get a better view... But the room is bathed with the shifting, pulsating, eerie green light you have only seen a small portion of before now and it casts a sickly pallor on... Well let's face it, zombies and ghouls have sickly pallors to begin with but it certainly is not helping their complexion at all.
As of yet there is no indication that the creatures you see are aware of your presence but that could surely change at any moment. Consider yourselves in Initiative but for know you all get the first round to yourselves... ((Yeah... I didn't leave a straight away tunnel leading to the room, that is why you're all standing in darkness. Just imagine a roughly 20' wide tunnel heading south...))
Krumar watches Dabbert and Nef in front stop and point out the undead up ahead. Krumar sees Dabbert shaky at the knees and figures he could use a little boost Heroism
In times of doubt, when shadows loom, Dabbert's courage will brightly bloom. With steadfast heart and spirit strong, He'll rise above, where he belongs.
In the face of fighting the undead, His courage will shine, no shred of dread. He'll stand strong, with weapons in hand, Defending the living, taking a brave stand.
In moments of darkness, he'll find the light, Dabbert's courage will guide him right. He'll chase his dreams, no matter the cost, For within his soul, resilience is embossed.
So let your fears be cast away, For Dabbert's courage will light the way. Believe in yourself, and you shall see, The strength within, that sets you free.
"See? Bard's are already uh...singing about me." Dabbert whispers to Nefire, completely serious but obviously trying to make a joke. He pauses long enough to assess the room, while rolling his shoulders in his armor. "On me? They're not particularly fast. If you and I can consistently sandwich them between us, we should uh...be able to kill them quickly."
He spends a moment trying to peak the corners.
"Be prepared for mop up." He says to the others over his shoulder. "Someone uh...check that green glowy mess but don't get too close. Could be what we're after but uh...could also be a trap or something equally as bad."
When everyone looks set and if the area around the door looks safe enough, Dabbert goes, moving just to the left of the closest zombie and taking a swing with his shortsword.

Nefire is unsure what he means by on me, but as he talks about sandwiching the creatures, she nods, tightens her grip on her greataxe and swings it around a couple of times.
But as she runs out after Dabbert, she sees her short little legs just can't get her there. After moving her 25' towards the closest zombie, she takes out a javelin and throws it at him in frustration.
