This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
I’m assuming this was growing in the skull at some point while the person was alive?
I’ll do a medicine check 23
”Maribel, what do you make of this? I think it was growing in that persons head!” says Gavin while motioning to the skull. “What some people will do for power”
Now that you examine it more closely, you're pretty sure the sure the shape of the gemstone does sort of align to various brain folds. It is likely that this was in fact growing inside the person's head while they were still alive.

"The mongoose blew out its candle and was asleep in bed before the room went dark." —Llanowar fable
“I believe these stairs lead back to the ‘death cube’. You guys wanna check out this hole in the ground? Maybe Mub can fly down and scout it out while we get ropes ready. I sure would like to know what that pinging noise is.”
You drop down to the lower sandy pit of the second mine level. Peeking around the exit of the chamber you see a medium sides amorphous room of rough stone walls as soft sandy floors. There is an opening to the west and likely a room beyond. To learn more, about the area some Perception or Investigation rolls are required.

There is definitely a room beyond; a smaller chamber with another circular sink-hole leading to an even deeper level. The sounds of the metallic pinging are stronger here.

This is very clearly an old sapphire mine. You can still see the occasional fleck of blue gemstone here and there among the walls and the structure of the mine itself has a very familiar feel of dwarven engineering efficiency. In fact, as you scan the walls, you can clearly see a cleverly hidden sub-chamber that seems designed to be overlooked by a set of curving walls concealing its narrow passageway entrance.
For Mirabel:
As you examine the stone you realize you are holding what's called a "Wizard's Flower." You've never really seen one up until now, as they are rather rare and greedily sought after by arcanists of all sorts for use in various rituals and experiments. They are said to be the remains of crystallized thoughts and spells that remain after a dead wizard's brain is boiled away. This particular Wizard's Flower seems muddied and chaotic. Whatever spells it might have been structurally representing have mixed and muddled together, causing some sort of failed-state amalgamation that likely drove this individual mad as it hardened into permanency.
Peren will yell to everyone above and say it is safe to climb down, We found another room with another sink hole that we need to explore. Also I think Kathra has found something in this room

Peren asks Gavin “Do you think that small gemstone is what is animating the skeletons”
For Gavin:

Gavin answers Peren “I believe some fool wanted to go through a ritual to gain more magical power and he got this growing in his brain instead.”
"This is why I tend to stay away from magic," says the dwarf with the weird magic tattoos. "Too big a chance of ending up with rocks in your skull."
“I believe these stairs lead back to the ‘death cube’. You guys wanna check out this hole in the ground? Maybe Mub can fly down and scout it out while we get ropes ready. I sure would like to know what that pinging noise is.”
Peren will take his rope off of his pack and look for somewhere to tie it off
It's not hard to find a rock to secure your rope to.
Peren will tie his rope to a rock and slowly climb down into the hole
Would I need an athletics roll for that 23
((That's more than good enough.))

Peren will look around the room

Then sneak up into the opening to see if there is another room to the west

Kathra will drop down into the hole with Peren, although she'll probably wait for him to scout around on his own before following him anywhere.
If you would like to look around and know more about this area, feel free to roll for it with your Stonecunning advantage for History.
((Oh sure yeah, I forgot))
Kathra scopes out the area.
History: 13
((What's this? A good roll? IMPOSSIBLE))
((Ok where’s Kathra and what have you done with her! LOL)
Mirabel is pretty sure that the brain rock is magical. Given what he knows about the ritual, is it possible to determine what spells might be within?
