Kalhala also tries to figure out where the noise is coming from - nat 1 :)
"Sure, I can, but why not check out what is over to the East? That's such a big expanse of space, what do you think is out there... in the dark? Also, what if that banging is coming from one of the coffins?" His eyes widen at this thought, but he takes his greataxe out and heads over the rocks he attempted badly earlier. Taking Lehmani's encouragement to heart, he attempts to clear them...
Berkarak whispers, "My curiosity is getting the better of me. Aside from that misty teleportation trick, I've recently learned some illusion magic. I could make it seem like a humanoid is walking through the space 30 feet ahead of us and see if anything interacts with it? Or attacks it?"
Grymar puts his hand on the wall for a moment, listening, then he steps forward, in front of Kalhalla. He tilts his head, listening to the sounds echoing off the rock. He’s used to the way sound travels underground, he starts nodding, looking up the steps to the left, then down to the right, sorting out where they are coming from. He looks through the gloom and darkness in the room, sniffing the air as well. He tries to determine what this could be, and from down below to the right vs up above where the sepulchres were. He stays quiet as he is listening.

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
While they hammer away at the rock wall to the west, Berk returns to the bottom of the steps. He casts minor illusion 30 ft into the large cavern on the cleared path area. It appears to be a weak, scared, male gnome commoner standing up from crawling, looking around, walking further into the cavern, stopping and looking around, scared, and finally back to a crawling position.
If nothing happens, Berk will venture out to that spot, being careful to stay on the clear path. He'll then perform the action again, 30 ft deeper, to see if anything happens. If nothing happens again, he'll make the gnome do a little jig and then return to the group and share that nothing took the bait.
Kalhala - Handing the torch to Lehmani, you heft your battleaxe and bring it down upon the jumble of rocks. Though it does create a resounding CLANG that echoes loudly throughout the cavern, the rocks appear resistant to the slashing damage your battleaxe inflicts.
Lehmani - Your mace manages to knock a few of the rocks away, but the passage is still mostly blocked.
Grymar - You attune yourself to the acoustics of the underground cavern and sense the source of the strange noises... It sounds like multiple sources, coming from the large fungus filled area to the east. You hear more whispering and thuds, but the sound suddenly stops when Kalhala slams his axe into the rocks. The clang echoes throughout the cavern and eventually dies out. All is quiet for a moment, then suddenly you hear more heavy thuds, like metal pounding on stone. The sounds are getting closer.
Berkarak - Your minor illusion appears in the darkness among the fungus. You watch it going through its motions when suddenly a dark shape bursts though it with a shriek. The thing passes harmlessly through the illusion and crashes into a group of puffballs before scurrying to its feet. You see what appears to be a small, gnome-sized humanoid dressed in filthy red rags. It wears what appear to be heavy iron boots on its feet. It chitters madly to itself as it eyes the illusion then suddenly shrieks again and wields a wicked looking sickle. The thing charges the illusion again, swinging its sickle in a dizzying blur. It stops attacking the image and huffs and puffs in place, realizing something is off. The creature whips its head around and notices the party. It then shrieks and raises its sickle as it charges, heavy boots clomping over the stone!
ROUND 1
The recaps rolled an average of 14.5 while the party rolled 10.2
Both Redcaps dash toward Berkarak with howls of hatred on their lips and sickles in hand.
Lehmani, seeing the attacking redcaps, turns her attention away from the rubble and races towards the aggressors. Unable to fully close the distance, she casts Sacred Flame on B.
As the terrifying little gnome attacks his illusory gnome, Berkarak is delighted that his magic worked. His face turns from delight to determination as the thing dashes at him; he remembers the joy he took in melee battle in the adventures of his youth. He pulls his quarterstaff and casts Shillelagh on it (bonus action), muttering a few words while holding the staff and his crystal. When the gnomes reach melee, he pulls back his quarterstaff to swing away as he used to swing his mighty long sword, but then he remembers his Fey patron and the abilities that come with it. He instead uses Fey presence to frighten the gnomes (action).
Wisdom save 13 on both gnomes; on a fail, they are frightened of me until the end of my next turn.
Lehmani - The redcap stumbles a bit as it charges Berkarak, not enough to send it tumbling to the floor, but enough to inadvertently dodge the sacred flame. (Rolled 13 for DEX)
Berkarak - The Redcap's black eyes widen and their masks of rage are replaced with visages of fright. Both Redcaps are frightened. Would you care to describe what they see that frightens them so?
Berk's eyes go black as a bird's, scraggly feathers seem to sprout from his exposed neck and hands, and his fingers bulge and turn claw-like. He tilts his head to the side at an unnatural angle and caws, his mouth appearing to be toothless for the moment.
Grymar spits a wad of something out of the side of his mouth and turns to his staff, saying Kombucha! and then he starts to move toward the odd looking red hatted creatures. “You’re a funny lot, aren’t cha? What in the blue blazes are ya?” Seeing the space is tight, he takes this turn to move into position for next round, inviting Kalhalla to move forward and enage as well.
Kalhala watches as the little gnome attacks Berk's illusion after the disappointment that the rocks they are trying to knock away are apparently a much more difficult foe than he thought. It makes him smile at the little things antics, until they turn and attack Berk. Seeing that Grymar moves out of the way for him, Kalhala dashes his way down the steps and uses his Goring Rush to attack Redcap A with his horns.
Zubien - You arrow manages to hit its mark despite the dim lighting in the area. (The Redcaps are just inside the dim light radius of Kalhala's torch, so I re-rolled your attack to account for DIS. The result was a 14.
Kalhala - You lower your head and rush down the steps. You feel something whiz past your shoulder, causing your hair to whip up in its wake. The arrow strikes the Recap just before you do. The little gnome-thing squeals in anger and pain.
ROUND 2
Redcap B tries to slash Berkarak with its sickle, but is too shaken by fear to land a hit.
Redcap A misses its first swing, hits its second for 9 points of slashing damage, and his third for 7 points of slashing damage.
Lehmani will focus on the one Zubien hit with his bow and cast Toll the Dead trying to draw again on the same force that helped them against the stalactite creature....

Rylan - L1 Human Paladin - Barty's "Princes of the Apocalypse"
Lehmani - The recap is too focused on trying to gut the source of its fear to notice the tolling bell reverberating in the cavern. (Rolled a 15 for WIS)
"Tough little bugger ain't ya?" and Kalhala continues to attack the one he rammed, unless Lehmani took him down, then the other. He unsheathes his longsword and takes a swipe at him.
When Berkarak takes the slashing hits, he points at the redcap and mutters some hellish syllables, casting Hellish Rebuke (reaction); it must make a DEX 13 save; it takes 12 fire damage on a fail or 6 on a success.
He'll then use the quarterstaff he's already wielding and on which he's already cast Shillelagh and swing away. (21 to hit, 7 bludgeoning damage).
He'll take the opportunity attack risk and back away from the frightening, frightened creatures, moving up the stairs 10 feet.

He turns at grins at the tiefling, "How's that?"
Lehmani - The acoustics in the cavern are such that the origin of the sound is hard to pinpoint.

"Worth trying." Lehmani grunts as she makes her own swing at the rocks with her magic-infused mace...
