After drinking his mead and feeling a bit tipsy, Leek will stand on his table and yell out to get the attention of the tavern:
"HELLLLLLLLLO! I will give one shinny gold piece to anyone who knows where the goblin enclave of Cragmaw is located and can guide my group there. If you don't know where it is, but know someone who does, you will get 1 gold piece finder's fee for the info and I will give 1 gold piece for your friend to lead us. We have a friend who has been captured by them and time is of the essence. Thank you."
Leek sits back down and waits for takers.
(PLAYER NOTES: 1. I know we seem to be guided towards dealing with the gang, but my character doesn't care about that. He cares about the goblins, until something changes his mind.
2. I understand that my character is inviting much unwanted attention, from thieves and liars. I understand that. My character does not!)
After Leek's brief pronouncement, Toblen (the innkeeper) strides over to Leek's table and firmly berates Leek, "Good sir, I would appreciate it if you did not stand on my tables. People eat off it and having sick patrons is bad for my business. Now I understand it is difficult for one of such stature, but if you feel the need to be front and center, then drag a chair front and center and stand on it there."
Toblen furiously wipes down the table.
OOC: I will elaborate further after Leek rolls persuasion.
The crowd, expecting Toblen to throw out Leek, stays silent.
At first.
Then, as Leek's offer sinks in, a voice pipes up to be the first followed by many others, all trying to speak over each other. You hear, "Orcs and goblins together out East...", "In the Manor...", among the more obvious, "In the woods...", "In the mountains." As each suggestion is yelled out, there is a counter roar from the crowd as they unanimously shoot it down.
Until Pip yells out, "Halia's friend would know!". At first the crowd utters "No, no..." but eventually some murmuring as consensus is achieved, and "yes, Halia's friend" can be heard more strongly. Pip, seeing the crowd come around to his suggestion, walks up to Leek with a grin and his hand out.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Not sure what skill I need to sense motive. I will roll a deception check (to check if there is deception) and perception check. Pick which is most appropriate.

OOC: checking people's motives, the truthfulness of what they are saying is an Insight check. In cases where you are trying to roll pre-emptively, just roll a d20, and then list the bonuses for the skills you think are appropriate. For example:
9 (Deception +0, Perception +2, Insight +2)
Pip looks at you confused. "No, I'm Pip. Halia runs the Miner's Exchange here in Phandalin. Halia's friend would know where goblins hide out, if anyone would know."
"Oh, ok. Who is her friend and how do you know this friend would have the information we are looking for? My companions and I are very busy and we don't have time to waste on false leads. The money is good if you can deliver."
Pip replies, "I don't know her friend's name, but he doesn't live in Phandalin, he lives in the forests." Toblen puts a hand on his son's shoulder and adds, "Not much is known about him. He comes into town, but only spends time with Halia and leaves again. Halia has a good feel for what is going on around in the wilderness of Phandalin and it makes sense it's because of him. I'm afraid no one here will know about a specific tribe of goblins. They're everywhere and usually not dangerous if travelling with a couple guards."
Elila asks Katarielle and Kitryn to sit down at one of the more isolated tables. Hesitantly, she says "I was ambushed", she continues angrily, "The weaklings took my coin and my weapons. I was ashamed... but now I seek revenge on those foul creatures. I've asked around, and everything points to Redbrand thugs. Do you have any information on their whereabouts?"
OOC: In general, what one member of the party knows, everyone knows. It's understood that party members share their information. Unless they specifically state that they are not sharing a specific bit of information.
As for gathering information, most of it requires social interaction. For example, you need to go talk to someone and ask specific question. Then you would roll Persuasion or Intimidation and based on the result I would decide how good the information you get will be.
The general "freely given" information I have handed out already (perception rolls to listen in on other NPC's conversations. Rindelk rolled a natural 20 on his perception, so everything there is to know "automatically" has been told.
"Here is 5 silver. My group is staying here for the night. If you can have Halia come here and set up a meeting I will give you another 5. Tell Halia there is 1 gold in it for her if she comes and can get us in touch with her forest friend" I hand him 5 silver and go tell the group the lead I have on the Cragmaw goblins. INFO SHARED!
to Elila: "we know little more than you at this time, we have arrived only tonight. though this group seems to be on everyone's tongue, my small compatriot is plain in the fact that we are on a path that is not their pursuit. that said, i'm not against learning more about before we decide to act, i do imagine the do not intend to leave while we finish out our current track.. you say they robbed you? they appear to have half completed the task! what have you remaining beyond hate?, while we'd welcome aid in our task and could see to the worth of your revenge along the way we are not in the business of charity"
after motioning to Rindelk & Leek to approach as not to yell: "scribe!.. that name, Halia, is she not the one that the bandits fear?!"
Pip looks short changed when he accepts 5 silver instead of a gold piece. Toblen speaks to you both, "It is evening now and I will not let Pip out of the Inn until full daylight tomorrow. By that time Halia will be in her shop and will probably not leave it until midday break at the earliest, but probably more likely end of the business day tomorrow. If that is an acceptable timeline, then earning his coin is perfectly reasonable. Nothing is free in life." You sense that last bit was meant for Pip. "On the other hand, Halia's shop is only minutes of walking from here if you wish to simply go to her shop yourselves. If you'll be staying the evening here, a room with a simple breakfast will run you each 8 silver. If you wish for a more elaborate breakfast, that will be 13 silver each."
Toblen proceeds to give you directions to the Miner's Exchange, where you can find Halia.
"I will go see Halia tonight. You can all remain here if you'd rather. Anyone who wishes to come is welcomed to. When I return, if the info was good, I'll give Pip his remaining coin. Here is 13 silver for a room and breakfast. I like my breakfast squirrels well done."
Leek puts the coins down on the bar and heads out the door to the Miner's Exchange.
OOC: For the sake of expediency, I'll say Halia just happens to still be in her shop instead of at home.
As you walk down the packed dirt road towards the Miner's Exchange, you pass the Lionshield Coster. The sign hanging above the door strikes you as familar. It is the same crest as the goods and supplies that were stacked in Klarg's cave in the Cragmaw Hideout. The Lionshield Coster appears to be closed for the evening.
When you arrive at the Miner's Exchange, the door is locked. You stand there briefly and suddenly the door swings open. A human woman who must be Halia is standing in the doorway, "Well, you're not from around here. How can I help you?"
im new and id love to play a game
OOC: Erenaeth is at the Inn, probably crashed already. Sildar is watching you hand out the shares of the coin.

Why are you asking about the Redbrands?
