"if you are Halia, the boy Pip has told us you are one who knows well the lay of things. my small friend here is eager to repay those which tried to kill us while we were bringing in supplies, so much that he is set to bother you at this hour instead of morning, i apologise. however his haste is not unwarranted, we carried Elmar's goods and the man who hired us was taken, we would like to retrieve him, before he is bled by goblins."
Halia scans the both of you (or however many came) and purses her lips. She makes a 'come in' motion and moves aside so you can enter her shop. "What is it exactly you think I can do for you?"
We are searching for Cragmaw hideout. Our original employer was captured and brought there by goblins. We were told you might have information on where it might be located, or know someone who might."
We are searching for Cragmaw hideout. Our original employer was captured and brought there by goblins. We were told you might have information on where it might be located, or know someone who might."
OOC: Cragmaw Hideout is the cave you cleaned out, where Klarg was based. Your group already knows the location to that. That being said, it's not vitally important with this NPC, as she will just point you to another anyway. Just make sure you ask for the right thing when speaking to the right person, as the key word "Castle" is what triggers the NPC's dialogues.
Halia listens intently and tells you, "There are many goblin tribes in the wilds to the north, the 'Cragmaw' are probably only one of them. There is a lot of ground where goblins can make a base. I keep myself informed of happenings, but I haven't heard word of a 'Hideout' specifically. However, as your half-orc friend pointed out, a druid whose escapades I fund by the name of Reidoth would have a much better chance of giving you any kind of answer, as he is intimately more familiar with the lands, it's geography and history.
I last provisioned Reidoth for a trip to Thundertree, about fifty miles north west. I can give you directions if you wish."
She eyes your group, your equipment and your weapons, and counteroffers, "I have another possible solution. As I am sure, you are already aware the Redbrands are a nuissance here in Phandalin. The ruffians loiter around the Sleeping Giant tap house, but I happen to know they are based out of Tresendor Manor and their leader Glasstaff stays there. If you agree to capture, kill or run off this Glasstaff and bring me all his correspondances and papers, I will pay you all 100 gold and tell you another way you can potentially find this goblin hideout you are looking for."
OUT OF GAME: Crap! Sorry. I don't remember details so good! :P
IN GAME: "What are these guys to you? Word around town is that they don't bother you at all. Maybe you are in league with them and are sending us into an ambush. Saw you eyeing our stuff..."
Taken aback, Halia responds, "I am not in league with them. True, they do not bother me because of my connections, but they are bad for my business. I need miners coming to Phandalin to settle down and work so I can make my living. The Redbrands are chasing out and robbing all newcomers, and they rob from the businesses that are already established. At this rate, Phandalin is doomed to wither and die."
"How do we know you are being truthful about knowing how to find CRAGMAW CASTLE? (Is that what it was called?) If you think you can send us on some foolhardy quest and not deliver on the info, you'll have an angry group to contend with. One that won't be as kind as the Redbrands..."
Halia smiles now, "Well, the threat of retribution from a group that can be more cruel than the Redbrands is enough reason to be truthful, no? Besides, I am not paying in advance. If you agree to a business arrangement and then decide to not follow through, then you will simply not get paid and we will do no further business together. If you agree to the business arrangement, then I will tell you how you could maybe find information about the Cragmaw 'Castle', and that is given up front without any guarantee from you. You could use my suggestion, ignore my deal and have taken advantage of me."
"Ok. Well it seems to me that traveling 50 kilometers to go see your friend for info will take much longer than dealing with a band of thugs. How do we get to this Manor? Let's get this silliness over with so we can deal with the goblins..."
(PLAYER NOTE: my character has been monopolizing the convo and the direction. Feel free at anytime to put him back in his place!)
OOC: As soon as we have a majority, that's the direction the group will go. Generally if no one speaks against it in 1 days time, then not posting = agreement. Since it's going to be the weekend, if no one interacts with any NPC's or says otherwise, we'll begin with that first thing Monday. So this time you get a couple days to agree or not.
Things you need to decide as a group: Accept Halia's mission, or not? If you do, do you wait until daylight, or do it this night (no resting)?
Regardless what the group decides Leek needs to go back and pay Pip. Plus I paid 13 silver for a room and breakfast, soooooooooo my vote is go back and sleep.
Elila didn't follow the group to Halia's, since I wasn't really asked to join the group at all. All that was said is "do the paths cross?" That said, Elila doesn't have a choice in what you guys want to do and she's still at the Inn.

OOC: you could 'retroactively' roleplay the rest of our conversation. Leek accelerated the timeline before you responded to the questions, that's probably not the last time that will happen.. just post out of 'sequence' and quote to maintain the continuity.
or we can start a new one since we're heading back to the inn. ie: upon returning to the inn for rest, i notice Elila still nursing a drink at the table alone. upon approaching her, "well lass, now that you've had time to think through a few more drinks, have you courage to answer to my question?"
Hint: I'm creating the opening for backstory for you, ie tell us that your not just some girl who got robbed and is now crying in her ale... Creative writing time! Why should we help you, or you join us.
OOC: There was an encounter that was supposed to happen if the party didn't decide to pursue the Redbrands. Leek did take on Halia's mission to kick out the Redbrand leader 'Glasstaff", but some of you are here at Halia's, and others are at the Inn, and Elila isn't committed to the group yet. So this is the DM railroading you guys together using one of the encounters that was supposed to be forced on you if you ignored the Redbrands too much.
Halia smiles even brighter at Leek's pronouncement. He provides the necessary details, "Tresendor Manor is to the East, up on a plateau. It is in quite the disrepair, but the Redbrands are using the cellars as their base. They are trying to make it look uninhabited, but do a poor job of it. As to your Cragmaw problem; I happen to know that the Redbrands have some goblinoid muscle hiding in those cellars. Take one captive and ask it where the Cragmaw base is. If anyone in Phalandin knows, it would be them. Now remember, bring me any papers, ledgers or correspondence that this 'Glasstaff' has with him!"
Leek and the rest of the party head back to the Inn for the rest of the evening. In the morning, breakfast is served. Toblen has arranged the eggs, bacon, sausage and leafy greens on Leek's plate to give it the shape of a squirrel. The whole thing is covered in black molasses. "Here you go Sir, squirrel, well done."
OOC: You stayed at the Inn. A modest room with a modest breakfast will cost you 8 silver. A nicer room with a better breakfast runs you 13 silver. Remember to play your character. Look at what you chose for lifestyle and pay accordingly.
OOC: Also, we're about to move out and trigger the next encounter. Everyone is full HP and all your abilities are refreshed. We can run 2 threads of thought here: the fight AND conversations from the previous evening. So you can all roleplay a bit more about talking to each other if you wish.
You all prepare and head out the door of the inn, into early morning sunlight. You begin to walk out of the courtyard, when four sleazy humans wearing grimy red cloaks block your exit, hands on their weapons as they watch you, "Well look here boys. Came to accept the big *****'s payment for our orgy tonight, and we got more willing to pay to come too!" The leader looks at Rindelk, scrunches his nose and says to his compatriots, "That one there in the dress is a bit flat chested for my tastes, but you beggars can't be choosers, eh?" The leader laughs at his own joke. Then looking at Leek, "You, you wrinkled old runt, you're not invited. Give us your stuff and be on your way."
OOC:
Leek: 3 of the men look like normal ruffians, but the leader who is doing the talking definitely has a black aura around him.
Marching order matters here, I suppose, so I'm going to roll to see who goes out first (lowest first):
Rindelk: 2
Katerielle: 6
Kitryn: 4
Leek: 1
Elila: You are not leaving with the group. However, as you're eating your breakfast next to the door, you do hear what is being said outside. The man saying "big *****" is the same man that robbed you. He was saying the same thing at the time.
Regardless, on my turn Leek says "Don't make me angry. You won't like it when I'm angry. Too late." With a cry that seems to come from the depths of the Underworld, Leek drops on all fours. His skin seems to split in half from the top of his crown to the tip of his tailbone, as a large Brown Bear erupts from the skin shell. The bear leaps forward and attacks the leader.
I thought that whatever we type is not canon until you say it is. Technically, we don't get into battle until my turn (which, depending on what happens before that might change). Just want to make sure that we are consistent. I'm just telling you what my character is planning to do based on the situation we are in, but if someone who acts before me says "JIM!!!! Jim from high school? How's it going buddy? Remember me? Rindelk from gym class?" and then all of a sudden we are all friends, I'm not going to go exploding bear shit on their asses...

Have we rolled initiative?
Just in case: 4

Bite: 15
Damage: 7
Claw: 21
Damage: 14
OOC: Not much for talking. Rolling initiative for the rest:
Leek: Do you want to go with 34 hit points, or roll 4d10+12?
OOC: Rolling 2 x D20s for Portent to be used at a later date. Also, I casted my hawk familiar back at the inn, and I put it in my pocket dimension.
