Hello all! I've been thinking a while about doing something crazy, so here's what I'd like to try...
- PCs start at Level 1. You are inexperienced, completely out of your depth, and probably considered yourself basically unremarkable until you found yourself dragged into adventure. - Roll for stats. Do NOT re-roll 1's. I want it to feel as much as possible like you're a bunch of random people who were thrown into something you couldn't possibly prepare yourselves for. - Standard starting equipment. Unwanted items can be sold for half their gp value.
Alright, everything sounds pretty standard right now, but here's where things get interesting...
Each of you starts play with a single rare magic item or two uncommon magic items of your choice. These items have been gifted to each of you by the local temple of Ilmater to help you on your quest, because each of you also starts play with...
...any one LEGENDARY magic item of your choice. Yes, ANY legendary magic item of your choice. But the catch is that your magic items all are CURSED! Your quest is to find a way to break the curses on your legendary magic items. No, finding a scroll of remove curse won't cut it. I will allow you to come up with exactly what that curse is, and feel free to be creative! Mostly the curse is there to motivate your character, so it doesn't need to impose a mechanical penalty... but it should be something that you would want to be free of ASAP, while making it impossible for you to simply discard the item (for example, perhaps your legendary cursed sword consumes the soul of its bearer upon his or her death, and it only transfers ownership when its bearer is slain... or your legendary cursed armor causes you to age rapidly whenever you are not wearing it...). Magic items with a variable number of charges, such as the luck blade, start with the maximum possible number of charges.
In your application, please include your character's
Name: Race: Background: Class (and subclass, if applicable): Rare magic item or uncommon magic items gifted to you by the temple: Legendary magic item, along with a description of the curse it carries: Brief backstory (including how you came into possession of your cursed legendary magic item):
As for the actual campaign, it's going to mostly be a basic dungeon crawling adventure. But... since you have some epic-tier magic items at your disposal, I won't be easing you into the adventure the way that I normally would when starting at level 1. If you (somehow) manage to get on the bad side of a dracolich on your first outing, you're fighting a dracolich during your first outing. You have been warned.
Campaign will take place over the D&D beyond forum. XP-based levelling. All official races and classes are available.
Applications will close on Friday, November 10.

I'm thinking a high-fantasy version of Colonial England, essentially. Lots of homebrewing involved and a non-zero amount of 'make it up as I go along.'

Rare and Legendary Magic Items: Cape of the Mountebank, Dragon Vessel
Very brief backstory (let me know if you require something more substantial!): The runt of a litter of six, Tom was abandoned on the streets of [insert place] with nothing but the fur on his back. While in a state of veritable gloom and self-pity, he crossed paths with an old lady who, after succumbing to his charming demeanor, promised to take Tom in and provide him with work - for she was a powerful witch in need of an assistant. For the following seven years, the tabaxi collected spell components for his employer, assisted her in macabre rituals and, from time to time, was taught a quaint little trick or two! When the witch eventually passed away, Tom was left in her will many personal possessions, and deciding there was no reason to remain in town took up professional wandering instead. That is, er, adventuring.
Are the attacks considered to be made by the player through the apparatus, or are they solely by the apparatus, which is commanded by the player? Basically, do effects that say "when you hit with an attack," "when you hit a creature," or similar take effect when the apparatus's claws hit?
Would using the levers be a [Tooltip Not Found] action, or something else?
Also, completely separate to everything asked before this point, would Battle Smith Artificer's Battle Ready feature allow the use of Intelligence on magic items that don't use Strength or Dexterity?
Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.

Rare magic item: elven chain Legendary magic item: [magicitem]ollamh harp[/magic item] (Normally) You can play the instrument while casting a spell that causes any of its targets to be charmed on a failed saving throw, thereby imposing disadvantage on the save. (Curse) Any creature with a Reckless attack has advantage on this save and with a successful save becomes hostile and can rage (if it has the class feature) as a reaction.
Backstory:
"I left home to follow the roving troupe, Merrywn's Mystical Musical tour. You need to start at the bottom, so moving the stage, instruments, and production was just a start. The real plan is to have my own band, something with a little more bite than what the elves offer up. The star of Merrywn's is Stephe Fallow or perhaps it was his ollamh harp. Most folks get glassy eyed from the harp and smile widely. But the barbarians hated the music, and it made them kinda crazy. Stephe, in a panic, rained fire on them all. I took the harp and fled the battle. It called to me and spoke of my greatness to come..."
😂Okay, have to admit that my first urge was to play a certain Half-Elven, Imateri Paladin.😉
Then I saw the Ring of Invisibility is a legendary item and it was really hard not to come up with a cursed version of that (something about a dark lord and the end of the world) in the hands of a Halfling.
But, assuming you'll allow a homebrew item, I think I've finally settled on something reasonable. Of course, I'm well aware that if I'm selected the item is subject to rejection or whatever modifications you think would be appropriate.

Legendary magic item, along with a description of the curse it carries:
This ring is bound to the Archdevil who created it and marks the wearer as their own. The Archdevil can track the wearer, communicate with them telepathically, and cast enchantments on the wearer as if they were present. Once this ring is attuned it can only be removed by the death of the wearer, the death or permission of the Archdevil, or the destruction of the ring. The method of destruction is currently unknown.
(Not so) Brief backstory:
Delvindra was brought to the Monastery of the Healing Hands as an infant by a dying human woman who claimed to be her mother. The woman was burning up with fever and little of what she said before she passed was intelligible or coherent, the only real clue to the girl or her origins was an iron signet ring of an unknown noble house that her mother wore...
Delvindra grew up among the clerics and monks of the Ilmateri, learning both the healing arts and the art of unarmed fighting. When she came of age, the Abbot gifted her the ring her mother had worn.
That was when the whispers started.
At night she was visited by visions of a creature, beautiful and terrible, that took at times the form of a human, a Tiefling, an Incubus, or an Archdevil and claimed to be her father. At first she believed they were nightmares, then that she was going insane.
It was easier than accepting the truth.
When she finally sought help from the Ilmateri the true nature of the ring was discovered, but no spell they possessed could free her from the curse. Instead, the gifted her with an amulet and a ring to protect her from the Archdevil that haunts her as she seems a way to be permanently freed of her curse...

This sounds like a really fun concept. And allows for some interesting backstory. This will be a WIP while I think about what it means to have this Legendary item. I think I’ve got it now! Planning a character around some defining thing like this is pretty fun :)
Magic items gifted to you by the temple: Rare: Amulet of Health ; Uncommon: Rod of the Pact Keeper, Adamantine Half Plate Legendary magic item, along with a description of the curse it carries: Moonblade curse: Each time the blade is unsheathed, Korba must ‘feed’ it ‘half-breed’ blood, causing his level in damage. Additionally, if this weapon is ever to be used against a ‘pure-breed’ elf of any kind, the bearer must succeed a CHA saving throw or have disadvantage on all attacks made with the blade until the bearer has taken a short rest to re-attune with the blade.
Brief backstory (including how you came into possession of your cursed legendary magic item): Korba comes from a long line of drow, though is the first ‘bastard’ half-drow, born when his mother bonded with a human slave (though nearly all non-drow are slaves, some are given some small measure of responsibility in drow households). Korba, born as a bastard half-drow was raised as most drow males, but was never treated anywhere near equal, even coming from a prestigious family such as his. This ended up causing him to learn how to fight to defend himself when he wasn’t able to hide or avoid it. Due to his skill with a weapon he was put in a position to train slave armies in weapon sport. Being the only child of the Matriarch of the family the heirloom Moonblade was to pass to him, but before he was able to claim what was his, an estranged uncle put a curse on the blade making it… more difficult… for ‘half-breeds’ to properly use.
Class (and subclass, if applicable): Sorcerer (Aberrant Mind)
Rare magic item or uncommon magic items gifted to you by the temple:Bloodwell vial (the "rare" version)
Legendary magic item, along with a description of the curse it carries:Staff of the magi. The curse prevents Rhaenys from using her shapechanging abilities freely. She does change, yes, but out of her control and at random moments of day.
Brief backstory (including how you came into possession of your cursed legendary magic item): As a sorcerer, Rhaenys has had magic abilities since moment she was born. She doesn't really know from which member of her family she has inherited it, as it seems to have skiped her parents, which are common Feywild people with absolutely normal lives. And while she could have used her magic to do something useful to it, she's used for mischief: stealing, deceiving, sometimes to just make fun of people.
Some time ago, Rhaenys caught wind of some powerful staff that some noble kept in his manor and, as she had nothing better to do, she thought it was a good idea to steal it and earn some good money. Wouldn't it just be great to be so rich that she wouldn't need to impersonate noble people anymore, but actually become one of them? So she did manage to break into the noble's house and the moment she put her hands on the staff, a cranky voice sounded in her head:
- It was about DAMN TIME someone got their hands on me! That stupid old geezer has had me in here for ages and never once sought to wield me! Can you imagine!? Me, stored! Unused! Trapped in a showcase to be displayed like some common goblet. He's even had a picture made of him wielding me as if he were a great wizard, when he cannot even summon the slightest puff of light colored smoke. How utterly disrespectul! Now ... what do we have here? A changeling, huh? Hmmmm. Interesting. Hehehe. I am going to have a little fun with you. Come on! What are you waiting for? Get me out, let's go.
So, long story short. Rhaenys is now the owner of a bored timeless powerful staff that wants to be used and takes pleasure in using her shapeshifting feature at will (and not in useful ways). The ever mocking Rhaenys is now mocked by a cursed stick on a daily basis! Many times she has tried to get rid of it, but whenever she tries to part ways with it, it simply returns to her hands time and again.
