Xanrym realizes that Avery and Liarin didn't follow Theldrin and him, so he returns through the door. He sees a black bear biting one of the coin-things and Avery apparently stuck to another one. He says urgently, "We've got to fall back. Let's put some distance between us and those toothed coins." He casts vicious mockery on the mimic holding Avery: "Though all men want treasure, no one wants you."
Xanrym also tries to inspire Avery to break free of the one that's holding him: "Avery is not avarice: gold has no hold on you! Break free and show this vile thing its place!"
Movement: Up to 30' of movement. Move back through the door just until he has line-of-sight to Avery. If he can do that from a distance (back by the door), then he will. Ideally, he'll Action: Cast spell Vicious Mockery on the mimic that's grappling Avery, WIS 13 save or target takes damage (1 psychic) and has disadvantage on the next roll it makes before the end of its next turn. Bonus Action: Grant bardic inspiration (a 1d6 inspiration die) to Avery. Free Action: Talking.
Theldrin moves up so that Liarin, Avery and the attacking pseudopods are within a 15 foot cube in front of him, then casts Thunderwave using Sculpt Spells to protect Liarin and Avery.
Sculpt Spells:
Beginning at 2nd level, you can create pockets of relative safety within the effects of your evocation spells. When you cast an evocation spell that affects other creatures that you can see, you can choose a number of them equal to 1 + the spell’s level. The chosen creatures automatically succeed on their saving throws against the spell, and they take no damage if they would normally take half damage on a successful save.
(OOC: Don't forget that Avery has Bardic Inspiration from Xanrym. Escaping a grapple is normally an athletics check, and I guess that you'd need at least a 10, maybe higher. Avery may want to use that Bardic Inspiration this turn. You'd just roll a 1d6 and add the result to Avery's athletics check.
Of course, Avery wouldn't need to do that if Theldrin 's spell breaks the grapple.)
Avery again will try to break free: Athletics: 8 Strength: 16. He is growling, "Should have went with my bloody instincts on these things. Its what kept me alive!"
(OOC: didn't that latest hit knock out Avery? He started the fight with 17 HP, and between post #842 and post #853, it looks like he has taken 22 = 10+2 + 4 + 6 points of damage.)
Seeing that Theldrin's spell shattered one of these cursed coins, Xanrym hopes that the group can finish off the two that are still ganging up on Avery. He decides to switch from vicious mockery to doing as much damage as he can, saying, "We've got to get Avery unstuck!"
Xanrym moves closer to get a clear shot with his crossbow at the mimic that is grappling Avery, being careful not to get within 5' of either of remaining mimics. Then he retreats back down the hallway to clear the way for Theldrin.
Movement: Up to 30'. Moving forward, firing crossbow, and then falling back. Action: Attack the mimic who is grappling Avery, Crossbow, Light (80/320): 22, Damage: 4 Free Action: Talking
The bear Liarin bites and rips at the coin.
Everyone else is up.
