Also I think it’s only fair to offer you all an ‘action’ short rest that you can do in a minute. You’ve just had two battles without one and it’s something I often do. Just be aware that the bad guys can do the same
(Would Theldrin be able to use Arcane Recovery to get a spell slot back as well as the other actions he took?)
Xanrym sheathes his sword and dagger and looks out the window. As Lldryk goes to set the trip wire, he asks, "What's your plan? Killing Misha and that Derek, I understand. But these bleary-eyed men? They just seem to be in thrall to some other power. Are you going to try to subdue three of them somehow or just kill them? And if they rush your, can you get back into that door?" (The one in the NE corner.)
Theldrin speaks up, "I agree we should take care to avoid killing the ones who seem to under a spell, try to capture them."

"We should try to subdue and restrain until we can get to the bottom of what's going on here."

(OOC: Xanrym is uninjured and has no abilities that recharge on a short rest, so he'll skip it. I'd like him to try to do various things, so I'll break down the 1 minutes into 10 rounds.)

They just seem to be in thrall to some other power. Are you going to try to subdue three of them somehow or just kill them? And if they rush your, can you get back into that door?" (The one in the NE corner.)
Xanrym tries to help Lldryk prepare by spreading ball bearings between the door and the northeast corner. That may slow down the men if they try to rush Lldryk. (On the map, the ball bearings could cover the square with the "1" on it and the three squares one up and one to the right of it.)
Xanrym moves back toward the stairs and recommends that Liarin be ready to use her bonfire to force the men to force the men to take longer routes to Lldryk or the others: either lighting it in the aisle between the bar and the table in front of it or maybe lighting it just to the NE of the number "1" on the map where the ball bearings are. That may force the men to go over or around the big table in front of the bar, slowing them down more, or straight through the fire. Anything to give Lldryk more time.
Then Xanrym makes sure that Bertram is bound if Lldryk didn't already finish doing that.
If they're going to fight, he plans to start the fight behind the bar with his crossbow. But when Theldrin comes downstairs, he asks the wizard, "What did you find upstairs? Did you get into the locked room?" As soon as Xanrym hears that Theldrin only opened the door next to the locked door, he worries that they've missed something. He asks Liarin for guidance.
He says, "I'll try to be back down before they get here." Then he dashes back upstairs to the locked door.
He'll try to pick the lock: Thieves' Tools20 + (if he has guidance) 4
Did he manage to get the door open? What did he see?
Also Xanrym. In the room you saw a woman tied up on the bed. She's wearing a white sleep robe and has clearly been bound and gagged. She look at you pleadingly. You can change what you did, or if you feel there's not enough time to release her. She would calm down if you explained that you would come back to free her in a minute or two.
(OOC: yeah, reworking those last few actions)
8. Xanrym stows his thieves' tools and walks briskly into the room, saying, "Good woman, it's OK." He looks at her face and checks whether her eyes look bleary, like Bertram's. If not, he removes her gag and says, "But we're not safe yet."
9. He draws his dagger and cuts through just enough of the ropes or cords to free her hands. Then he heads for the door, saying, "Stay here and keep quiet. I'll return in just a few minutes." He closes the door and heads back to the stairs.
10. Disturbed by what he saw, Xanrym sheathes his dagger and switches to his crossbow. He dashes down the hallway and stairs, back to the common room. If he doesn't make it all the way back behind the bar, he will just start at the bottom of the stairs by Bertram's bound body, loading a crossbow bolt.
"I can try to put them to sleep," Theldrin suggests.
Xanrym says, "That would be fantastic! But....what if this isn't the last of them? Should we try to subdue them first? Or just put them to sleep, grab Avery, and then barricade ourselves upstairs until morning?"
"Yes, our next move after this confrontation is something I have been questioning..." Theldrin replies to Xanrym. "We have a noble from Hook Hill upstairs who wants to be escorted home as well."
Alright so the crew with Avery captive come into the bar, Dogroot, running ahead and calling for Misha, doesn't see the trip wire and falls over onto his face. The two thugs pull Avery tied up into the bar and draw there weapons when they see Misha burned on the floor. "It's a trap! Rush them!" They scream to each other. You'll all get a surprise round apart form Avery so you can all take an action before them. I'll roll Initiative.
Xanrym casts vicious mockery on Dogroot. "Rooting around on the ground like dog? A little 'on the nose' isn't it?"
Movement: None Action: Cast spell Vicious Mockery, Damage: 3 psychic One target within 60 ft range. WIS 13 save or take damage and have disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn. Free action: load a bolt in his crossbow
Theldrin decides not to cast Sleep yet, and fears a Fire Bolt might be lethal. He frowns with concentration as he moves the spectral glowing hand towards Avery and attempts to untie the rope binding him.
He cops the full effect of both spells. He's looking hurt and confused but still up. He looks ready to pull himself up. The thug on Avery's right cops an arrow to the shoulder but is also still going. All these guys seem tough. They aren't talking to each other anymore, so full of bleary eyes determination.
Theldrin - Give us a Slight of Hand Check for your Mage Hand. Dunno if that uses your slight of hand or if it has it's own, should look that up before rolling.
Group 1: Liarin, Lldryk, Xanrym
Group 2: Dogroot

That's the surprise round over, now group 1 is up.
Although I’d be happy to put you in a backup list. If someone leaves I’ll add you in
