" We are in about as good of shape as could be at the moment, we should either press on and not be where the ratling know to find us or leave and try a different entrance if there is one." He looks around the group. "Who can see in the dark? I can really only make out about 10 feet in the dark."
"all right- big group from the south. RIP Olive" When everyone is safely retreated to the entry room, Doc tosses a vial of green liquid as far up the tunnel as he can see. A bonfire erupts, blocking the passageway. "I don't think fighting is the smart option here, but you have all done amazingly well so far. Retreat? What say you all?"
"I can create a cloud of fog to block their view, when they get past the fire. Might let us snipe some of them off as they emerge from the fog."
OOC Molding earth to close the whole tunnel would probably take too much time but... he could use it on the mudslide.
It'd take time but for Doc's creative use of fog cloud I'd say Fog Cloud can help them retreat without a dex save with the help of Mold Earth and Docs spell.
"actually we could do both. A couple of us prep the escape route while the rest of us prep the tunnel and battlefield with oil, ball bearings, caltrops, etc. And get in position. Set up some aiming sticks so we can fire into the tunnel even in the fog. when we see the first rat I will drop a Big fog cloud 40 feet into the tunnel so it spreads out into the rest of the lair to slow them down." Doc sketches a quick range card and notes optimal firing positions to maximize damage but eliminate the chance of friendly fire, just in case they decide to take a stand.

OOC For Doc's firing sticks and firing sketches this is a big task to accomplish in less than one minute.
Have him roll a DC 15 investigation and I'll even accept Arcana to complete this in time. Of course he'll need his friends help physically setting everything up as well.
"How do we want to know when they have entered the fog? I don't have ten min to set up an alarm? I could hid in the fog as I can sense in it better then most and give a warning, but might be in line of fire too..."
"I was going to wait until we saw the first one, but..." Doc grabs a bell and 10 feet of string from his pack and throws it to him. "Maybe this will help?"

Axel will help in getting everything set up and then position himself 20' from the tunnel entrance. And if possible ready an action to fire an arrow at the first thing that exits.
As they use Mold Earth and Fog Cloud to buy time to escape upward to make a defensible position back at the basement upward. However as they can hear footsteps coming around the corner. However these creatures... though growling and snarling can be heard. They do not push up the mudslide, they can hear footsteps scrawling back around the corners. Skittering and chuckling but nothing comes to cratered basement above.
OOC
Oh I thought they were waiting down below. I just looked that they used Mold Earth and Fog Cloud to escape. This buys them more time but surprisingly enough.. they aren't followed up the mudslide.
OOC So does the group want to block the cratered basement now that they have escaped with Fog Cloud and Mold Earth and take a short rest? Or do they wanna go straight to Emberwood no short rest? It'll be a decent trek to make it back to town.

If that's what they want ^^
"I like the idea of picking them off as they come through the fire and fog, but we all need to decide what the plan is." Axel says.

"Sounds like a good plan." Axel replies
Baldrige nods slowly and thoughtfully. "That just might work. Most of their attacks were at range, the cowards!"

Baldri will station himself where he can be within 30 feet of everyone in the party, waiting to see what happens.
Axel will help in getting everything set up and then position himself 20' from the tunnel entrance. And if possible ready an action to fire an arrow at the first thing that exits.

the intent was to occupy and defend the room with the pit, killing as many rats as possible then retreating up the mudslide if overwhelmed,
there are no elevations on the map, might be causing confusion.*

Avery will continue to use Mold Earth to hold back the advance.
D&D since 1984

Ahh the pit doesn't have a picture sadly. On the map they had climbed back up the Mudslide, back to the cratered basement.
Did they want to make defenses in the "room" (more tunnel) They were attacked at instead?
