There isn't really a surprise round in 5e, per se. Combatants can be surprised, which sort of results in a 'surprise round' of sorts.
So basically, during this first round of combat, the ghoul and the two grimlocks will not move or receive actions, and they will not be able to use any reactions either.
Also yeah the deception thin was a tad confusing. I considered fully verbalizing my plan in OOC but I figured I'd just do my best in IC and see what happens 😂 My intention was to let the grimlocks pass and deal with the Ghoul first. Oh well 😎
@OTheophylus, Aria lacks a ranged option. Normally, I would have her follow Dorn's lead, but wanted to check in ... What would you like to ask of her in this first round?
We'll get better at our strategies. :) If we let them pass, they would have gone straight to Volneer, two rooms away! Guess we would see how wild he really was with two grimlocks on him. :)
I think Dorn would feel comfortable enough for Aria to close in with him. He sees kneecap and callim at the entrance of the hall, so if anybody wants to get to Dorn or Aria, they’ll have to get through kneecap and callim’s reactions. I’ll post dialogue in IC.
@RRV, the actions posted for Volneer will not be possible. There is no way that Volneer will be able to move 30' and target the ghoul with any sort of effect. Please refer to the most recent map.
I have officially had it up to my eyeballs with the forum dice roller ... so we are going to stop using it.
I did some quick research on the "die roller is broken" topic on the DDB forums ... and it turns out that the forum die roller problem has been around for a while (and apparently is not going to be fixed anytime soon). It does seem like the PbP forum is the only place where these types of errors keep popping up though.
So, for all of our future rolls, please roll using the buttons provided on your character sheet.
The rolls that get made this way do get logged in the game log, so at the very least there will be a record of who rolled what and when.
I would like to avoid situations where someone rolls for the same thing two or three different times (or worse yet, rolls for two or three different actions) and then chooses which of the numerous rolls/actions they would like to use. Going to institute something like a 'no take backs' policy here.
So from here on out ... if we are rolling dice for something ... then those rolls will be used in the action that we are proposing. It's totally fine if we have to go back and apply a different modifier or something ... that part we can sort out later ... but the roll itself will stand.
On the upside, since the rolls will be occurring outside of the PbP IC thread ... we will be able to make our rolls, see the results, and then craft an IC post accordingly. So we have that going for us.
In the current game log, there are a metric ton of 'test rolls' that folks had made. So I'll toss a d100 to act as sort of the 'chapter break' between those test rolls ... and the rolls that we will see occurring after the d100 roll will be the ones that count as rolls for use in the game.
@RRV, @OtoutoDwimble ... when you declare actions for Volneer and Calim respectively during this first round of the ghoul encounter ... I would like those actions to be the first we use under this new system.
Thank you for being patient with me as I grok this new site.
I know this is probably late— but there is a user in here who created their own tool that formats rolls on here. It acts similar to the dice tool here, in the sense that it takes your input and formulates a dice code. But it has many more options like advantage, and other common modifiers. Don’t mean to complicate things but just putting it out there. If you want I can share the link
I don't think the problem lies in the formatting of the posts, if I'm being honest.
I have had some rolls that I formatted correctly (like simple 1d20 rolls) show up as absolute rubbish when using the mouseover function. Like, roll a 1d4 and then the mouseover says it was 6d6+4 or something. I think the error lies somewhere with however the rolls are getting logged/retrieved on whatever server they are being maintained on.
I'd like this new part of our 'test run' with the roller to be as simple as possible (cut out as much of the unknown as possible) and we'll just use the die rolling functions built into the character sheets.
Thank you though. As you get farther along in the game you are helming, please let me know how/if the die rolling tool works out.

Kneecap moved next to Calim, probably clear, but didn't want to edit my typo as it contains rolls. :)
^^ Understood, and thanks.
These rolls man 😂
Well ... at least you have 1,000% justified taking the Lucky feat. :)

Dorn: "Let them pass."
Calim and Kneecap:
"You sure about that?"

Thank you for humoring me.
Once Calim and Volneer post their actions for the round, I will do a round summary and then we will begin again.

^^^ right because Volneer dashed, so he’ll likely need to dash back to get back in the area 😭
Alright gang, time for a hard pivot.

Sorry, I didn't see this until after I'd made my post... I will next time.

No worries. I posted the 'use different dice' request after you had rolled the chill touch attack.
You will still have to alter your intent, however, as it is impossible for Volneer to target the ghoul during this first round.
