He would understand that this is only true because of the proximity to the church. As you get further away from the church, and closer to Kholias, the madness will become too strong to simply dissipate with Channel Divinity. Even Valar will start to be effected once you get away from the church.
Amis grip his axe hard with a death grip and he sees the horrors of an alien battlefield. His senses are strained, and he takes a step back. Valar's aid clears his mind "Thank you Valar. I still think we should drop off the greataxe at the eleven camp before heading to the church. This place is affecting my mind."
Barring any objections Amiz will walk towards the elven camp.
Seeing as how we previously said that three out of five of you wanted to go to the church, I’ll assume that’s still the case. Alsen is still into the idea, but would understand if you want to turn back. He knows that people may die confronting The Eaters. I’ll give y’all a few hours to decide.
Ok so what's your approach? You're currently up on a ledge looking down at a church in the clearing. Around the church is a few crumbling buildings, but other than that you don't see much. Are you going to scout or try to sneak?
Valar advises caution, to do both-scout and sneak to get close to make sure they are not ambushed. They are in enemy territory. Move through the ruins to get close to the church.
So who is going to act as Scout? I remember a different universe in which Valar was mauled to death by zombies when he tried to scout the g'Ruek Mine. Is that the plan this time as well?
Ok so i'll assume the plan is for Draíocht to scout ahead using Pass Without Trace, then potentially for the rest of you to sneak up to the church using the same spell. Draíocht sneaks ahead and tries to stay out of sight while probing the church for potential traps or guards:
Draíocht is able to succesfully Sneak around the entire church and surrounding crumbling buildings. To the north of the church are a couple crumbling houses, To the east is an old decrepit Inn, clearly fallen into the earth with the temple. To the south are more crumbling buildings, more closely compacted. To the west it seems pretty bare, but Draíocht hears a strange howling noise when he scouts this section of the area.
So from what direction will you approach the church?
"Some cover between use and that church would at least help me get closer without someone hearing the jangling of my armor. I'd say let's approach from the east. That old Inn could be a fallback position if something happens." whispers Amiz.
So Draíocht comes back and advises you all on the situation. And you all decide to sneak up near the church. I’m doing my best to roll stealth checks for all of you. Including pass without trace, cloak of elvenkind and disadvantage from heavy armour.
Ok so you sneak up to the inn, on the decaying sign out the front is a picture of a cat trying to swim in a keg of liquid. You get a good look at the church, and as you do you see a ghostly form patrolling out front. It takes you a few moments to recognise the spectral image of the hobgoblin woman you know as g’Ruek’s wife. She floats back and forth in front of the church, making faint wailing sounds as she does so.
"I'd hazard she'd go in to warn them if we attacked. So perhaps a distraction?" asks Draíocht. "Perhaps head to the inn and prepare an ambush for any first investigators?"

Are you going to all climb down from the cliff and head to the church?

It's up to y'all if you want to backtrack. You could probably make it back to the river by the time you have to sleep again.

If Valar feels a pull towards the Church, then he nods. "I am being pulled in that direction, let's see what is there."

Draíocht offers to cast Pass Without Trace to help the party approach without being seen and keep an eye out for threats.

Valar agrees to let him scout ahead, makes more sense.

Valar suggests we keep some ruins between them and the church to mask their approach if a route can be found that way.

Valar nods in agreement, "Let's draw them into a fight of our choosing on our ground where we'll have an advantage for a change."
So you'll all head into the inn and try to draw the specter in with an investigation? What form will this distraction take?
