Also, not trying to be a jerk, but the rules for the game are located right on this website. What may be done in a round, what those actions are, what they do, etc.
Along the top ... Sources > Player's Handbook
If there is something you are trying to refresh your memory on, it is all right here.
Thank you! No I don't think you're being a jerk. You're good! I'm just always multitasking and doing too many things at once so I wasn't that careful in reading today. that's my bad.
currently in class and at a zoom meeting at the same time ahah

This recent stuff in the OOC is a gentle reminder about how the game rules interact with the story we are sharing.
I know that a lot of us are coming to the game with varying levels of experience. Personally, I found a fair bit of unlearning required when I made the jump to 5E.
I don't mind a bit of 'I would like to do X but I don't know how' if it comes up here and there.
For me at least the only experience is 5E with only one inexperienced DM and some Critical Role podcasts. As you are very RAW DM, some things seems weird - like where is your shield, put it on blah blah blah. It totally makes sense and I don't have anything against it, but it just takes getting used to.
^^Right. I get that the action economy can be frustrating to feel limited by. Particularly if they are gotcha moments like ‘you cannot do that because three rounds ago you forgot to such-and-such.’
That is why I’ve been asking you guys to tell me what you have donned/drawn prior to the encounter beginning. It gives you a chance to start the encounter in a good spot without needing to spend actions getting shields donned.
A few have been opting to not reach for shields until after an encounter begins. That’s fine too. There are no wrong answers to those questions.
Aye, I appreciate that. I remember - not too fondly - moments of 'well you didn't tell me you donned/doffed/prepared x/etc.' in other games when announcing such a move would either mean an active interruption of the story or an awkward disclaimer about how you behave in what scenario.
In this particular case I figured Ichep would not travel with his shield donned because... well it's fairly heavy. And combat preparation like donning a shield, drawing a weapon or casting a spell can start combats... as we've seen :D
I promise I'm not picking on you, but you have mentioned a few times that you are new to the game.
No it's good. I really don't mind!!! I am trying to learn so it's been pretty helpful. they got irl DnD games where I live so being here and trying it out here first and learning from you before I even go in person helps with the nerves ahah *sweats*
Oh I thought it was because of the difficult terrain? I thought it needed and athletics roll due to that?
Nope, no rolls needed.
Difficult terrain does, however, eat up twice as much movement. In order to move 10' through difficult terrain ... you must allocate 20' of your movement to do so.

Oh okay. Thank you for clarifying! Sorry I keep messing up, but I really am heading your advice. I tried reading the Player Handbook. My focus has just not been it lately. :/ but I do want to say I really appreciate the effort you put into helping us and prepping this games. Like I am really grateful for your commitment and patience :)

No worries, and no need to apologize. I find it best 'tutorial-wise' if we just cover stuff as it comes up. When some new term makes an appearance, or some new condition arises or whatever ... I'll call attention to it.
I really don't mind explaining taking a moment to explain it.
No need to read a book from cover-to-cover to enjoy the game. You already have about 85% of what you need. Eventually, as new pieces get introduced (or parts you knew once but forgot about) we can take a moment to go over the particulars.

Aw thank you so much! You've been really helpful when it comes to explaining these types of things (like really detailed smart and also it's written in plain words which is what I needed. I'm so bad at understanding jargon hghghh) and I truly appreciate it a lot. Thank you for taking the time for it!!!

Just a heads-up I might be slower on the posts this weekend. In addition to (maybe) flying out tomorrow for a family wedding, I made it to the next round of the NYC Midnight short story contest, so I'll find out at 11pm tonight what my next subject is, and I've got till 11pm Sunday to write 2k words on it.
And to make it more fun, I spent 8 hours in the emergency room today for...something that's been bugging me since Tuesday, and they were able to determine it wasn't a heart attack, cancer or internal bleeding, but other than that, they don't know what it is, so I'll have to go see specialists next week. As my wife says, never be "interesting" in medicine.
So I'm a bit distracted currently. :D

Can confirm about Cunning Action. It's really bread-and-butter for rogues.
Oooh daaaam, DM is tired of our shenenigans. Watch out for rocks. They tend to fall
^^Not really. I'm here for the shenanigans. :)

Well I had an A+ in calculus 101, but I can relate 😀
@SunDial, I promise I'm not picking on you, but you have mentioned a few times that you are new to the game.
The Strength (Athletics) roll was not needed in order to complete any movement.
Also, there is no risk of hidden positions being revealed to one another ... because no one is hidden and everyone on the map can see everyone.
I think what I'd like to try for the rest of this encounter for Balen is go right back to basics.
That is, describe what you would like Balen to do, and then I'll let you know what, if anything to roll.

Rinn's raining lighting down on that giant toad. Just took out 1/3 of its HP.
Now cross my fingers and hope my squishy wizard continues to stay alive.
