The battle between the giant spider and the bugbear reached its climax. The spider's venomous fangs sank deep into the bugbear's flesh, injecting the potent poison that quickly overwhelmed the creature. With a final, agonized roar, the bugbear struck the giant spider with its morningstar before succumbing to its wounds. It collapsed to the ground in defeat.
Meanwhile, Yaudara, focused on detecting the taint of an unhallowed place or the presence of any fiends or undead. To the paladin's relief, he found nothing amiss in the hallway or in the chamber beyond. It seemed that, for the moment at least, the heroes were not beset by any supernatural threats of that caliber.
Agnes and Rinn each entered the darkened, columned chamber, their light spells shedding illumination on the ominous archway carved to resemble a demon's face. It was a familiar sight, one they recognized from their studies. This archway was a replica from the tomb of a mighty lich, a cautionary tale from another dungeon in ages past.
With a shared understanding, the wizard and warlock recalled the tale associated with such darkened archways. It that other much more horrible tomb, the face was a stark warning to adventurers that all was not as it appeared. A reminder to always look before one leaps. The image lived on as a cautionary tale ... and in this small dungeon ... whomever carved this replica probably meant is a homage to those bygone eras ... or perhaps as a delay tactic.

Move up to G6, melee Attack for 12 to hit, which misses.
Rinn presses ahead after Yaudara, moving through the demon door and hoping that they're right that this is just a means to distract and slow down would-be intruders.
Rachael stays back with Agnes, her fur bristling, not liking this one bit, and giving Rinn a look with her expressional green eyes of, "you first, I insist, Master Rinn."
The elf has another mote of flame at the ready for another casting of fire bolt if necessary.
OOC - If by some miracle one of the goblins isn't dead or if he sees another combatant appear, Rinn will be firing his cantrip at them. To Hit = 17 + 5 = 22. Damage = 1.
The battle in the underground chambers came to an end. One one end of the bridge, the giant spider's poisonous fangs dripped with venom and struck with deadly precision. On the other end, Agnes' eldritch blasts crackled through the air, her starlight finding its mark through the vision-blocking darkness enchantment with deadly accuracy.
The heroes had won the day. The lookout post had been vanquished.
After Yaudara's yklwa glances off the goblin's armor, he sees the familiar pattern of shadow, then blue-white flame, and the goblin drops dead in front of him. "Good thing we untied that one," he mutters.
The paladin turns back, gives a smile and a nod toward the magical darkness, then proceeds across the rope bridge to join the newly-orced Toadstool.
The small chamber on the eastern side of the gully was dimly lit. Some trash and other debris littered the floor in places, but it was otherwise empty. To the south, a spiraling, descending passage went down to another level. In the ceiling, a circular hole could be seen that accessed a darkened chamber directly above this one. A rope that the bugbear had used when climbing down hung from the darkened circle.
Yaudara shakes his head. "I can climb, but thank you." Before heading up, he'll look into the darkness to see if his dark vision can spy any enemies up there, and listen for noises that might indicate something else is up there. If he hears nothing, he'll stow his shield and weapon and climb the rope. If he hears something, he'll stay down and mention it to the group.
After a few moments, Yaudara heard no indications that the room above was occupied. Upon climbing the rope, the smell was the first thing the paladin noticed. Reeking furs and dirty blankets lay atop matted piles of filthy straw in this darkened place. The paladin had found the heart of the goblin warren.
One more door exited this room to the east. Another sleeping space, also unlit and just as dirty, presumably for the bugbear.
Yaudara returns to the hole and looks down. "No signs of life," he says to Toadstool, "and there's a treasure chest up here. I'm no good at thievery skills, like picking locks or finding traps, so if one of us is better suited to that, I'd recommend they give it a go. I'll be close by, in case things go wrong."
Agnes skips through the gaping demon head and onto the bridge, where she slows her pace and carefully moves to the eastern side. She peers up after Yaudara as he explores the sleeping chambers. "What can't be picked can oft be smashed," Agnes agrees with Toadstool. "By the by, wouldn't this be a good time fer a little rest?"
"Can be, if needs be." Yaudara looks around the room. "This particular spot is very defensible, if we all get up here and pull the rope up." He glances into the other room. "If none other feel the call, I'll check the chest and open it. Seems wise to do that before resting."
Rinn had rushed through the demon-headed door, only to find a dead goblin on the other side and his companions seeming to have finished off the other combatants. He sticks his head back through he door, surprising the skittish Rachael a bit as he beckons her through. She follows, coming to the other side to continue to travel along behind Rinn.
The mage takes a moment to look through the downed goblins and bugbear (Investigate 8+5=13), wondering what they may have on them. He also is listening to talk of resting.
"While I could continue thanks to Agnes's healing," says the mage, "it does appear that Agnes herself may need a small rest. Plus, we should take time to search to see if there's anything worth while on the dead; we will be needing it more than they will."
Rachael mews a bit at Rinn and he nods, relaying the tressym's wisdom, "Rachael says that we need to keep an eye out on our surroundings, make sure we don't end up surrounded while resting. We don't know who, or what, has been alerted to our presence."
Rinn will be using arcane recovery while he has the opportunity to recovery 1 lvl 1 spell slot.
During the rest, the chest was inspected and found to be without traps and unlocked. It contained an assortment of coin pouches and other small bric-a-brac. The spoils of a band of highwaymen, most likely.
Also contained in the chest, a penned letter on parchment. It was written in the common tongue with fine penmanship.
To the Incompetent Oaf,
It has come to my attention that you, a lumbering fool of a bugbear, have once again proven your utter lack of intelligence by failing to properly man the lookout post assigned to you. It is a wonder you have not fallen off of your own two feet in sheer idiocy.
Furthermore, I am disgusted by your report that the snare trap set by our cunning kobold was triggered by your sheer incompetence. No doubt you stumbled into it like a blind ogre tripping over its own club. Pathetic.
In light of your ineptitude I have instructed the wizard, Nox, to pay a visit in a few days' time to reset the magical snare that you have so foolishly tampered with.
Do not disappoint me further, lest I find it necessary to send you to the depths as living feed for the ghoulwall.
With disdain, Grimgnaw
Loot
Scimitar x7, Shield x7, Shortbow x7, Morningstar
[There are also seven sets of leather armor from the goblins & the bugbear's hide armor. Other than being functional armor ... these are essentially worthless and have no value as loot]
In the chest: 200gp and the note.
OOC — A short rest occurred. Rinn — Arcane Recovery used, one 1st level spell slot recovered.
Toads chuckles a bit and asks the group "That, that Grimgnaw fellow, uuuuh, not a nice guy, umm polite, but not nice, not nice at all. Uuh do you think this note is old, do, do you think the wizard already came?"
OOC: Would the bugbears hide armor fit Toads? It's not magical, so I don't have high hopes :D

Init - Round 7 Summary
Web recharge: 4, so a fail
Toadstool shrugs and shakes in its spider form from the heavy damage that the Bugbear managed to do.
After that he sees the miniscule form of goblin (compared to a giant spider) that is swinging his tiny scimitar.
Toadstool lets out a loud shriek and bites the Goblin 7.
Encouraged by Agnes' description of the mouth being an illusion, Yaudara charged past his companions, using his small stature to weave among them and step through the illusion. He struck at the goblin on the other side, but couldn't penetrate the creature's armor.
Move up to G6, melee Attack for 12 to hit, which misses.
Bonus Action to place hex on G6. Action to cast eldritch blast at G6. Attack: 17+5=22; Damage: 7+3=10 force damage, plus 6 necrotic damage from hex.
Agnes releases another eldritch bolt. Her starfire burns through the darkness of the demonic mouth, bound straight for the goblin with the bow.

On the other end, Agnes' eldritch blasts crackled through the air, her starlight finding its mark through the vision-blocking darkness enchantment with deadly accuracy.
The heroes had won the day. The lookout post had been vanquished.
Vanquished ... but not yet explored.
Toadstool drops his spider form and just sits down on the bridge to take a breather. Takes out his waterskin and just chugs.
"Oh my, oh boy, oh no, this was bad, this was very bad"
Still winded he stands up and goes in the chamber where the Bugbear was and tries to look around (NAT 1 investigation for the total of 3).
OOC — An updated map.
After Yaudara's yklwa glances off the goblin's armor, he sees the familiar pattern of shadow, then blue-white flame, and the goblin drops dead in front of him. "Good thing we untied that one," he mutters.

Perception check: 20
After a few moments, Yaudara heard no indications that the room above was occupied. Upon climbing the rope, the smell was the first thing the paladin noticed. Reeking furs and dirty blankets lay atop matted piles of filthy straw in this darkened place. The paladin had found the heart of the goblin warren.
One more door exited this room to the east. Another sleeping space, also unlit and just as dirty, presumably for the bugbear.
In this last room ... a chest.
Ooh, I, I have big and clumsy hands. No, no I shouldn't. I can break it open maybe.
Agnes is proposing taking a short rest.
"Can be, if needs be." Yaudara looks around the room. "This particular spot is very defensible, if we all get up here and pull the rope up." He glances into the other room. "If none other feel the call, I'll check the chest and open it. Seems wise to do that before resting."
He'll wait for Rinn to weigh in, and then decide.

Rinn will be using arcane recovery while he has the opportunity to recovery 1 lvl 1 spell slot.
The party rested for a bit in the warren.
