My track record as a DM in the play-by-post world is less than stellar, but I’m hoping to change that ever so slightly with this next effort. I think my large-scale, lore-heavy homebrewed campaigns that inherently require significant time and energy in creating meaningful NPC’s and generating detailed maps have been my downfall. In short, the labor outweighed the enjoyment. With that said, my intent for my next adventure is to run a short but well-written campaign that I’ve purchased through DMs Guild. This should lower the hurdle I’ve struggled to clear in the past. So, if my straightforward admission of past failures hasn’t turned you away, then read on.
This adventure and the players involved will be determined entirely by rolls of the virtual dice after recruitment is closed. First, a d4 roll will determine which one of the following we will use:
Adventure 1. A mystery begins to unfold as citizens of a seemingly ordinary village prepare for a special annual event. (Four 4th-level characters)
Adventure 2. Rumors suggest that something sinister has brought shipping to a halt in a local harbor. (Four 5th-level characters)
Adventure 3.A darkly whimsical story centered around the nighttime disappearances of people in a prominent city. (Four 5th-level characters)
Adventure 4. A small group of performers must fulfill a promise they made years ago. (Three 6th-level characters, all of whom must have at least 4 levels in the bard class)
To select the players, I will publicly roll 12d12 for each person who has expressed interest (this should hopefully prevent any ties), and the individuals with the highest totals will be given the player slots for the determined adventure. Those players will then discuss character creation with each other in session 0. So, there’s no need to post ability scores or a character idea. If you want to put your name in the hat, then just post your interest below in whatever way seems fitting to you. I’ll close recruitment and let the dice decide our fate in forty-eight hours approximately six hours (1:00 pm Pacific).
OOH! Chaos! This sounds fun. I am also interested! And don't worry about PBP games fizzling out, they often do, but its that one rare group that sticks together for months or years, and has hundreds or thousands of pages in their game thread. Hopin' my dice luck comes through.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Hi, I'm Raccoon_Master, a young genderfluid actor, writer, explorer, and bass vocalist. Pronouns They/Them/Theirs
My Characters: Brorminthe Devout Crusher; Morgrom the Cunning Summoner;Theathe Rebellious Beauty;
You definitely caught my attention with this whole "chance decides everything" idea. It's got a fun, risky feel to it. I'm ready to roll with it, win or lose! Looking forward to this wild ride. Cheers...
I did a one shot where the character creation was like this, rolled for race and class, then rolled for stats where you rolled each stat separately (opposed to picking the stat after rolling). It made for some interesting characters!
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Recruitment is now closed. Thanks, everyone.
Here’s a recap of how this will work. To determine the adventure, a 1d4 roll will be made, with the result corresponding to the adventure descriptions in my original post. To determine the players, a 12d12 roll will be made for each applicant, and those four* with the highest total will be given the character slots for the adventure. If a tie needs to be broken, then I will make an additional post with another 12d12 roll for each of the players in the tie situation.
*I’ve decided that adventure option 4 will have four players, not three.

Sounds like a good time, I'm down to throw my hat in.
A wild idea, count me in!
I’d also be interested.
Interesting! Sure, I’ll go ahead throw my fate in with the dice gods as well.
I am interested. Would this be played on DnDbeyond? Or discord and the like
Good question. DnD Beyond exclusively.
Definitely interested, and I'm good with random. Very old school.
UPDATE: We already have eleven names in the hat; so, I'll be closing recruitment at 1:00 pm today (Pacific Time).
