Name: Uncia
Race: Tabaxi
Class: Druid (Circle of the Moon)
Background: Outlander
Alignment: Neutral
Backstory: Uncia was born in a small village located in the distant peninsula of Chult, a place filled with both exotic beauty and danger. She spent her childhood learning how to survive the myriad perils of the Chultan jungle, and when it became obvious that she possessed a talent for doing so, Uncia was sent to apprentice with the village mystic. Unfortunately, her training didn't last long before her small village was raided by a group of armed foreigners, killing those who tried to fight back and taking the rest captive to be sold as slaves. Uncia was quickly able to figure out what their captors wanted the female slaves for, and, since she was still young enough for it not to be evident what gender she was at a glance, managed to sneak into the group of young boys without detection.
Uncia was forced to work as a house servant for a couple of years, until it became obvious that she was going through puberty. At that point, the minor noble who had bought her realized that there was a chance to dramatically increase the return on his investment, and sold her again, to a more influentual noble who took Uncia to an isolated woodland manor he owned where he could enjoy his purchase without interruption. Finally in an environment she knew she could survive in, Uncia escaped at the first opportunity that she could get, and even though guards were sent out to look for her, none of them could find her. She traveled for a while, surviving off what she could hunt and forage for herself, until she felt she was far enough away for anyone to have stopped looking for her. Ever since then, Uncia has been living as an adventurer, as she no longer has any home to return to.
Name: Victoria.....Race: Reborn.....Class: Barbarian.....Background: Haunted one.....Alignment: N
Uncommon Magic Item: +1 Maul
Backstory: Victoria woke up on a slab, with scars that suggested she'd been the victim of a tragic accident -or an autopsy. The fragments of memory that come to her make her think she'd been reassembled from parts, but that can't be right. Can it? Victoria is searching for the answer to the question "Who is she?" Or "Who WAS she?"

forgot the magic item
Using 5th level unless you want her higher (or lower)
Used starting equipment plus the uncommon magic item. Is there an allowance for other purchases like armor? Originally she was worked up for an Ebberron campaign.
Ah, should have mentioned but we'd be starting at level 1. You'd be reaching level 2 relatively quickly, however, because I know level 1 can be boring. Characters can start with 200g to purchase extra supplies in addition to their starting equipment.
I have an idea for a character who is from Barovia. Would it be allowed?
Hmmm, I'll allow it, but I think I'd prefer characters to be from somewhere else. I like the idea of the characters being thrust into this wholly new, terrifying situation and not really having much background knowledge about the place.
...Hmmm, I'll allow it, but I think I'd prefer characters to be from somewhere else. I like the idea of the characters being thrust into this wholly new, terrifying situation and not really having much background knowledge about the place.
Well, no, you're very kind as always, Nix, but I will respect your preferences; I re-adapted the character a bit to be from Toril.
Name: Svetlana Galanodel
Race: Wood Elf
Class: Barbarian
Background: Haunted One
Alignment: CG
Uncommon Magic Item: I'd love a Broom of Flying! (I would like to imagine that it is a common broom, to which the Voices have imparted magical power to help Svetlana). But if you don't like us to be able to fly I'll choose a different one.
Backstory:
The wood elf maiden Svetlana is the only survivor of her community. The small elven settlement of Aeloulaev, in the High Forest, was wiped out by an incursion of orc cultists from Gruumsh, who used the population for a massive blood sacrifice. Svetlana survived only because she was mistakenly believed to have died during the battle.
When Svetlana finally awakens, she is surrounded by the horror of the unholy sacrifice that has been made. A horror that marks her deeply... to the point that, from that day on, Svetlana hears the Voices. Voices in her mind by her. So many voices. Her voices tell her that they are the female elf slaughtered by the orcs.
Svetlana, having lost her city and everyone she held dear, shaken by horror and, at times, doubting her own sanity, is forced to begin a wandering existence to survive... She doesn't have a clear plan for what to do with herself.
Backstory: Cael is a bastard son of an elven merchant from Neverwinter, his mother is a sailor from Baldur's Gate whose ship is often employed by his father to transport his goods to and from Baldur's Gate. Cael stays with his mother until he is come of age as his origin would spark a scandal in his father family as his visage is like a mirror to his father with his sharp features and his flaming red hair. When he was of age, he left his mother's side and stays in Baldur's gate and move his way to become a member of The Guild. He quickly moves up the ranks and even has his own crew in a span of a few months. That is until one day when a job went wrong in the lower vaults of The Counting House, forcing him to leave the city for good in order to escape the pursuit of the Flaming Fist. Coinless and without a place to call home, Cael wanders north towards Neverwinter where he would finally meet his father.
A CG human barbarian noble. Otherwise a prim and proper member of Waterdhavian society, this character recently lost her twin brother, a warrior.
In any event, she found herself haunted — somewhat literally — by the loss. Whenever she 'rages out' and does other feats of barbarian-esque strength that cannot be readily explained ... it is because she is channeling her brother's spirit a little bit.
Eventually, I plan on selecting the Path of the Ancestral Guardians for Nyssa and when the subclass features manifest, it will be the brother that will spectrally join her from time to time and fight at her side.
Nyssa and Theron Taenaron were born into a life of privilege and luxury as the twin son and daughter of a prominent noble family in the city of Waterdeep. Raised amidst opulent surroundings and attended by servants, Nyssa was groomed from a young age to fulfill her role as a member of high society. As a twin, Nyssa always felt a deep bond with her twin brother, Theron.
Theron Taenaron was Nyssa's constant companion and confidant, sharing in her joys and sorrows alike. However, Theron was not content to simply live a life of leisure and luxury. He possessed a restless spirit and a thirst for adventure that often led him into trouble. Theron found himself involved in some sort of get-rich-quick scheme and murdered after associating with ne'er-do-wells from the more unsavory parts of the city.
Nyssa was devastated by the loss of her beloved brother, her grief driving her to the brink of madness.
Even in death, however, Theron's spirit refused to be silenced. Bound by the unbreakable bond that twins share, Theron's ghost lingered on, and reached out to Nyssa from beyond the grave. Though others dismissed her claims as mere delusions, Nyssa knew that her brother's spirit was real, and that Theron stood ready to guide her and protect Nyssa in her moments of need.
Now, Nyssa walks a precarious path, straddling the line between sanity and madness as she seeks to unravel the mysteries of her brother's death and bring his killers to justice. With Theron's spectral strength at her side she has embarked on a quest to bring his killers to justice, honor her brother's memory, and ensure that his spirit can finally find peace.
For the uncommon magic item, I'd like to go with a ring of jumping.
So at the last minute (or possibly after the last minute, I'm not sure if this is closed yet) I realized I have another character idea that might be a good fit for CoS.
Name: Millicent Harrowhark
Race: Variant Human (Ritual Caster: Wizard)
Class: Warlock/the Undying (with eventual multiclass into Wizard/Necromancer)
Background: Adept (Kelemvor/Myrkul)
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Uncommon Magic Item: Arcane Grimore (initially skinned as her ritual book but later taking on the aspects of her Wizard's spellbook and her Book of Shadows from Pact of the Tome. Without any additional mechanical bonuses, of course.)
Backstory:
"(They were) merely changing the name on the letterhead and putting a purple sunburst around the skull outside the temples."
When Myrkul, god of the dead, was slain by Cyric the Usurper, most of the Clerics of the god of death transitioned to the new order with little fanfare. Some, however, did not.
For that which rules death cannot be killed, and some who worshipped the Undying God continued to do so in secret... even after the mantle of godhood was passed from Cyric to Kelemvor.
"Harrow" grew up in one such order. While her order outwardly practiced and performed the rites and rituals of Kelemvor, they also practiced other rites in secret... darker, forbidden rituals... intended to help Myrkul to once again rise to his rightful place as the god of the dead.
A gifted ritualist and apprentice Wizard, Harrow has caught the eye of Myrkul. As a chosen of the Undying God, she's been sent out to seek the magic and rituals that can restore him to his former glory. A path which has brought her, unknowingly, into the mists of Barovia...
I have been looking to join a Curse of Strahd game for some time, hoping to make it in under the wire.

Interesting rolls, I think I can work with that.
Character Name: Pavel Marsk
Race: VHuman
Class: Bard (leaning toward College of Spirits)
Background: Charlatan
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Uncommon Magic item: Rhythm Makers Drum
Backstory: Pavel spent his formative years in Gustav’s Wandering Minstrels, Circus Troupe and Wild Menagerie where he learned the subtle art of weaving magic into music and song along with the skills of acting, acrobatics, and entertaining with the sword while traveling the lands around the Moonsea. Embracing the oral tradition of his people, he became a troubadour and performer specializing in storytelling. He also picked up the skills of a small-time con-man and gambler, fleecing unsuspecting townspeople during his travels. His goal is to find a patron, a wealthy noble from a mid-tier family, that will allow him to perform his art outside of the circus while living in luxury.
Hmmm, I'll allow it, but I think I'd prefer characters to be from somewhere else. I like the idea of the characters being thrust into this wholly new, terrifying situation and not really having much background knowledge about the place.
I didn't know you had this preference when I applied. I'm happy to adjust the backstory to have the character be from elsewhere.
Backstory: Monar Grimewarder was not always a paladin of noble cause. Once, he prowled the dark alleys and seedy underbelly of Waterdeep as a feared bounty hunter, his name whispered in fear by those who dared cross him. Born into a tribe of bugbears known for their prowess in combat, Monar was groomed from a young age to be a fierce warrior, skilled in tracking and capturing prey. As he grew older, Monar became disillusioned with the life of violence and crime. He witnessed the suffering caused by his actions, the families torn apart by his pursuits, and the innocent caught in the crossfire. Seeking redemption for his past deeds, Monar turned away from his tribe and sought out a new path. It was during his darkest hour that Monar encountered a group of paladins, followers of Tyr, the god of justice. Inspired by their unwavering commitment to righteousness, Monar pledged himself to their cause, swearing to use his skills for the betterment of others. Under the guidance of the paladins, Monar learned the ways of the righteous, channeling his inner strength and conviction into the pursuit of justice. He honed his skills as a tracker and hunter, using his intimate knowledge of the criminal underworld to root out corruption and evil wherever it may hide. Now, as a paladin of Tyr, Monar travels the Sword Coast, a beacon of hope in a world plagued by darkness. Though his past still haunts him, he remains steadfast in his quest for redemption, knowing that every act of kindness and every life he saves brings him one step closer to atoning for his sins.

Backstory: Procopios is a Lazarite Christian from Ytarria, the default setting of the old GURPS Fantasy game. This is a world where humans from medieval Earth were transplanted over 1000 years ago and brought their religions, cultures, and languages with them. Lazarites are a heretical sect who hold that necromancy is acceptable since it can be used to explore the mysteries of everlasting life, and to spread the gospel among the undead, whose souls still deserve to be saved (Jesus, after all, raised Lazarus from the dead, and the dead rose upon his resurrection). Procopios was drawn to the monastic life from an early age, and spent his formative years serving the local church in whatever way they would allow him. Mostly, this was grounds maintenance, but when he was old enough, he was allowed to perform minor liturgical tasks, as well. At age 16, as he was preparing to take holy vows for the Benedictines, he collapsed in his chambers, overcome by a vision of St. Lazarus commanding him to seek out and deliver the gospel to a powerful vampire whose face he could not see. Convinced this was a true vision and not a deception by the Devil, Procopios was prevented from becoming a priest in the Petrine (Catholic) Church, and fled the village under pain of death if he ever returned. Eventually, his spiritual quest brought him to the hidden island city of Abydos, center of power for the hidden Lazarite Church, where he was admitted to St. Magdelene's College and became a full priest. Upon graduation, he was expected to take up residence at a parish in the outer provinces, but on his journey there, he found himself lost in a strange, unseasonable fog that seemed to spring from nowhere...
Backstory: Evania was a Vistani girl who fell in love with a Dusk elf, she left Borovia in secret, when she found out that she became pregnant with a child that shouldn't exist. Once born she named the child Enache, and after a few years, left the boy, with distant relations to the Vistani, The Marchenko's.
Ean and Liza Marchenko, both half wood elves, living in Shadow Dale, helped with the defense of the town, and hunted for game in the area.
They brought up their adopted son Enache in their trade as a furrier, as a ranger.
As Enache grew older, he was haunted by the face of his mother, lately, a strange man with blood shot eyes and sharp canines, would enter his dreams, prompting him to research, finding out what kind of monster haunted his dreams, he gather tools that would, in theory help kill this, monster. He then went on the hunt for his tormentor. (Maybe, accidently, Mistwalking to the land of the foe, he seeks)
Those who look into your eyes can see that you have faced unimaginable horror and that you are no stranger to darkness. Though they might fear you, commoners will extend you every courtesy and do their utmost to help you. Unless you have shown yourself to be a danger to them, they will even take up arms to fight alongside you, should you find yourself facing an enemy alone.

First I just want to say thank you for all these applications! They were all very good and made deciding very difficult. I wish I could take everyone but I know that I can only handle one campaign at a time in order to give my all to it. If you weren't selected, I will still keep you on a backup list in case anyone needs to drop out instead of re-opening recruitment. I think it's fairer that way so everyone who posted an app has a chance in case of dropouts.
These are the selected players! I am looking forward to a very interesting and exciting campaign in the land of Barovia.

Without a doubt it will be, knowing the Dungeon Mistress! Have fun everyone 😀
Curses! Why do I always show up a day late to Curse Of Strahd threads?
I'll leave a character link here for consideration in case of drops outs. I made him for another CoS campaign that fizzled out.
Brother Procopios
Race: Variant Human
Class: Cleric (Death)
Background: Acolyte

Uncommon Magic Item: Staff Of The Python
Backstory: Procopios is a Lazarite Christian from Ytarria, the default setting of the old GURPS Fantasy game.
