Hello! Welcome to whatever this is. I want to try my hand at DMing something light so this is much more of a sandbox space for your characters to interact with each other and NPCs if you so wish. There is an underlying mystery/story if you want to interact with it, but basically I'm going to be sort of riffing off you guys to see where you want to go with it. I just made up a fun little world for y'all to enjoy because I'm really into roleplay and sort of worldbuilding so I'm giving this a shot.
Welcome to the Hotel Lanmit's Annual Masquerade Ball.
You will be coming shortly.
EDIT: I just wanted to clarify that the Masquerade Ball is less like a Phantom of the Opera old timey ones, but one where I give your character a 'mask' that I think fits your character and your first task/thing you do is a ritual based around deception/not knowing who anyone is but having to believe them. "Trust fall" type exercise.
Twimee'zah is basically a pre-Columbian Meso-American fantasy world mixed in with elements of Southeast Asian culture (because I think its just neat *insert Simpsons meme here*). It is a landscape filled with vast jungles interspersed between mountains. The main city is Enerst which is filled with stacked on top of each other apartments/buildings (quite like the Old Quarter in Hanoi, Vietnam) where trees, vines, and other flora and fauna snake their way in. People use rope bridges and vines between the buildings, but there is a dirt road underneath as well. Enerst is a place with all the usual shops and sounds. Bustling city with lots to do. This place is the most safe... or so it seems.
To the east is the smaller country residences (like the picture on top). That is where you'll start. The town there is called Amizt. It is juxtaposed next to a large waterfall by the mountains. A quiet semi-resort town. The rich come to relax, but the poor there work to survive. You just got invited to the most ritzy hotel of the area.
To the west of Enerst is a water based village called Ellus. Houses are floating on the river and people there catch fish and shrimp. They had a great hurricane recently and are in the midst of rebuilding. The local oracle says there might be another one soon.
And for the first time in centuries... Twimee'zah has gotten snow.
Other Locations
Mountains - Rumored to be the gateway between the Feywild and Twimee'zah, people avoid the mountains at all costs. The sporadic wintery weather up is a place for concern for the many superstitious people who are afraid of change.
Twish Rice Paddies - Where dwarves and gnomes mainly work. The work is grueling, but necessary. This is where the main food supply comes from. A great tlalocatl collects dues and sacrifices.
Fsshside Port - Where the ships come in. Very much far upstream from Enerst. This is the poorest side of town because the people of Twimme'zah don't care much for outsiders in their self-sufficient economy.
Nezrat "Tiefling Bandits Cove" - To the south of the rice paddies are where a group of tieflings are rumored to be hiding. Tieflings are considered bad luck, against the deities these villagers claim and are not welcome within Twimee'zah grounds. They stalk the outskirts of the local river system that goes more inland, waiting for new arrivals. It used to be a very busy stream, though once it became known as a tiefling settlement, it was slowly abandoned.
Azzan Ruins - It's actually not so much real ruins, but ruin-esque. It's a temple that is still in use, but forbidden to go in by non-worshipers. It's a miles walk from Amizt, but can be traveled by canal.
The Underside - Entering the temple you would find a small gateway arch lined with flower petals and cobblestones. The start of the place the living don't go. It is where the souls go to rest. Once traveled in there, there's likely no coming back. (Day of the Dead inspired place. looks pretty much how it does in Coco.)
^^ made this dumb map instead of doing homework. too lazy to crop
Technology:
Nature based technology. Algae based fuel. Firefly lanterns. Boats powered by wind. The canal is man-made with the same system as the Erie Canal in New York. (I'm still thinking about how to incorporate it, but for now you can really ignore this part.)
Main deities:
Intsanah - A cat-like god of the hunt, evolution, finesse, and independence. Worshiped by those in Twimee'zah
Fenya - A dragon-like god of survival, cunning, and honor. Worshiped by those in Twimee'zah
Sesisah - A squirrel-like god of stillness, water, and fear. The god of the dead and ruler of The Underside. Feared but revered.
Dinesa - An arctic fox-like god of trickery. Rumored to watch over the mountains. Feared.
Common Races:
Tabaxi
Humans
Elves
Uncommon Races (mostly the short races. things are built for the tall folk. you might have a bit trouble getting around. sorry shorties)
Dragonborns - dragons are slightly feared, but idolized. you would be welcomed, but a surprise!
Gnomes
Halflings
Dwarves
Ostracized races (sadly, there is fantasy racism here):
everyone else - for character applications all races are welcome! even Humblewood if you're up for that! ... though in a very cat-centric society I don't suggest Jerbeen hehehe (you could tho!)
Rules:
Man I'm pretty much okay with whatever. Pretty fast and loose with the standard DnD rules. Anything that sounds reasonable will be accepted (you want to tie a lasso and try to throw it around someone? yeah why not! it'll be counted as a grapple. try to ride it like a bull? oh my god okay! wow that's wild but sure!). I play these out like movies in my head so whatever sounds cool. Go do it! I like to see stuff happen.
You can even just straight up run away and leave your party to deal with a monster (a jerk move but that's okay). Literally whatever. Parties also don't have to stick together. You can do your own thing. This is really a free space choose-your-own-adventure.
Also one thing is that you don't have to fight anything if you don't want to! You can also talk/reason with whomever you encounter (and I do encourage you to try to persuade them). It's kind of like an Undertale setting where anything that is sentient will talk and can be reasoned with. They might not listen, but I do suggest you give it a try!
Also like I'm a new DM and this is mostly just sandbox type stuff. I just want to see y'all have fun. Anything pretty much goes. It'll be rated about PG-13. The genre can drift into whereever you want it. Horror? sure okay. Slice of Life? okay! Adventure comedy? yeah why not. all good options. We'll literally play it by ear.
You know, you had me right up until the 19th century tech level. Very cool homebrew! If you ever want to explore the earlier history of your world, please, let me know.
I'd say good luck with your recruitment, but I don't think you're going to need it, so I'll just say have a great campaign!

Oh wait really?! Thank you so much!!! I hope some people join!
Honestly I can take out the 19th century tech level if that's a deterrent. It's not really much of a big thing in the story/world. Trains can be replaced by boats or whatever. It's more just sort of there. hehehehe
Also yeah if you're up for it, I can PM you some world building ideas! I tend to make things up on the spot.
edit: I won't be able to respond for a bit my computer ran out of battery and I forgot a charger.
I mean, basic steam power is easy enough though 'iron horse steam locomotives' might be a tad too 'advanced' for a tree hugging / rice paddy culture. Plus, woods/forests might not be a great place to destroy for 'iron rails'. Or sink in rice paddies. Perhaps some very basic steam powered things... like a stripper or shaker to help reap rice?
Or some form of Heron's Engine? Originally from Alexandria in 100 CE (AD) >>> He called it an aeolipile, or "wind ball". His design was a sealed caldron of water was placed over a heat source. As the water boiled, steam rose into the pipes and into the hollow sphere. The steam escaped from two bent outlet tubes on the ball, resulting in rotation of the ball. Somehow get a pulley on that and you have a nice little spinning 'engine' to power something else. OR propel a row boat?
Basic batteries -- using citrus juice or vinegar (turned rice wine?)... but this means they have to have access to some raw copper, iron, or zinc ores to conduct the direct current flow. I mean that 'mystery vessel' from Egypt that they figured out was a battery. Clay vessel, copper tube core, tar... just add smashed citrus juice and make wires...
BUT.. it all depends on how much you want to depend on electricity. OR basic steam power. OR artificers and 'steampunk-ish' inventions.
Living among trees, I can understand preferring 'electic light' to fire and torches. But, you don't have electric stoves so FIRE will be around.
but ya... ALOT of what was discovered / invented in the 1800s... typewriters, revolvers, etc. I don't think you want in the picture you have posted in the beginning.
I'm afraid I have to respectfully disagree, Kol. I love the idea of the 1800's tech. It's not really to my personal tastes but it's part of what makes the setting so unique.
We've had fantasy steampunk. We had magic as a stand in for technology. We've had modern day tech. We've had sci-fi tech. But I love that this is something different from all of that!
Personality/Backstory: Emerged from The Underside a few months back with a sacred mission from Sesisah, but upon entering the mortal world, he lost his memories. The people of the temple, who watched him emerge from the shadows beyond the gate of flowers, gave him a place to stay, out of fear and reverence. He has taken up the guise of Oly Crux, a pale elf from a distant land. Without his memories he is eternally curious, but reserved with a strange feeling he has something important to do here. (Short backstory but I didn't want to overload the application.)

Whoa okay those are all really cool suggestions. I pretty much came up with this world on the spot because I live life by "throwing spaghetti to the wall." I hadn't really thought about how/why technology would be in there. I just didn't want it to feel like the world was 'behind; which tends to happen when using non-western culture inspiration.
I'm going to edit it with more natural based low tech + magic. Those are such good suggestions. I'm going to borrow some of them. Thank you!
Also just wanted to say you know a lot about history like that's real cool. I love any history trivia!!!
I just wanted to clarify that the Masquerade Ball is less like a Phantom of the Opera old timey ones, but one where I give your character a 'mask' that I think fits your character and your first task/thing you do is a ritual based around deception/not knowing who anyone is but having to trust them. "Trust fall" type exercise. It's sort of based around a play I read one time where three characters are named the same and they had to vote on the fate of a prison but one person keeps messing up the votes and writing "revolution" or something on it but they don't know who it is and they keep speculating who is it with each other when one women goes to the bathroom. ... if anyone knows what play I'm talking about please send it I forgot the title. it was literally called "villa" or "vista" and I just can't find it.
UPDATE WHILE I WAS WRITING IT: I FOUND IT. it's called "Villa" by Guillermo Calderón
Also @anyone else on this thread. I'm totally up for suggestions if anyone has any ideas. I made this basically to prove to myself that I can do something long term (I suck at commitment sometimes and I'm trying to work on that. literally if I'm not here I'd be watching brainrot on youtube), so I'm really open for anything honestly. It's really just sort of an open-ended world like Minecraft.
Personality or Backstory: You wandered around the wilderness killing anyone who tried to approach you. You are cursed by Sesisah. You eventually accept company of the villagers, they fear you so much that they do anything they tell you to do he is kinda like the king of a small village called Ti
Esh is a bit of a nomad, travelling through the wild places of the world. He is fiercely protective of his beloved forests and specialises in hunting beasts.
Another option, because my first one is pretty basic.
Name: Kota
Race: Leonin
Class: Barbarian
Background: Mercenary Veteran.
Kota is a respected former member of a mercenary troupe known for working closely with the Valenar Elves. When he retired after 20 years of service he was gifted with a double bladed scimitar, the sacred weapon of the Valenar. Since then he has travelled extensively, aiding the common folk wherever trouble arose.
Love the setting! Looking for a pbp game since I have ample free time but may struggle to have one time slot locked down the way a typical game is scheduled, and I love creating characters with atypical flavoring like this setting would allow for. If we go with a bit darker of a theme (several Sesisah-related characters already) I could do a human spores druid that is some kind of priest/temple guard/champion figure for Sesisah and the Underside. If it's a bit more of a light-hearted adventure vibe I have a human alchemist artificer/life cleric that is very herbalist/nature-witch flavored and all about exploration and learning. Happy to try out anything that fits well with the party or any story threads you're interested in exploring!

Wow thank you so much!!! I'm glad you liked the setting! I've been wordbuilding about it for a bit and then decided to write it down on a whim, so it had a few quirks and a rocky start, but I'm so glad you thought it was cool!!!
Yeah whatever you want to try out is up to you! I think they both sound interesting. And haha yeah I've noticed a bit of a Sesisah vibe going on here which is pretty neat!!!
I've sent out the pms and the campaign link for the OOC chat!

Love what you've done with the place! My apologies, I had a run of busy days and this sort of slipped off of my radar. Looks like you're off to a great start with the recruitment as well! Best of luck with the rest of recruitment and best wishes for the campaign!
Hey, this setting sounds amazing! The combination of cultures here feels really well-thought out, and is something I never thought could work together! Have to say, really good job. I might submit an application, but I just want to compliment the ideas for technology and the overall setting. Really cool!

AHHH thank you!!! no worries!!! life gets busy sometimes. I've been wrapped up in finals week hghgh. Thank you so much. That is so sweet! Hopefully things go well fingers crossed. I've never DMed before so I hope this works.

Ayyyyyyy thank you so much! Haha yeah I wanted to combine them for a while now. :) I'm Filipino-Colombian and I sort of realized over time how similar a lot of the world's cultures are and also how it would kind of be fun to mix things together in a fantasy world! I was also thinking about how a cat-like society in a jungle would react with water and change and then sort of how they would come to believe in things if they thought they were like superior or something (hence worshiping a god of evolution but fearing water/being ambivalent about change).
But ahhhh thank you though. I'm really glad you like it! If you ever want to submit, I'll leave this always recruiting even when the campaign starts just in case.

Pronouns: He/Him
Race: Thri-Kreen
Class: Barbarian (Will provide more detail for the build, if it should arise.)
Personality/Backstory: Quite uncommon for his profession, Pak'Cha a quiet and gentle man, along with some minute shreds of compassion for the relationships he does make. However, due to his lack of communication, he can be considered as 'naive' or 'childish' due to his language barrier, and thus keeps quiet.
(WIP Backstory, will edit soon! Main gist of his past is a juvenile of nomadic hunting group who got lost as a child around the Port. Due to his appearance and many arms, he was taken in by some villagers to haul cargo. Having four arms certainly does help. Eventually, once he was grown, he decided to go into the city of Ellus to find work. To the obvious disgust of most, his "hideous" and "frightening" looks prevented him from getting a job. So, he tried something that could get him money and take advantage of his looks; body-guarding. Who would want to attack someone with an imposing looking bug man by their side, mmm? Besides. He can get closer to the normal folk.)
Hiiiii!!! Yes! there's still room. We actually haven't started yet. So I'll add you to the OOC chat.
Also heck yeah clueless newbies are definitely welcome. I've only started playing DnD like two months ago so I'm fairly new myself. It'll be a learning experience! Most of the time when learning just showing up is basically the gist of it.

Technically, you could 'fantasy' some 1800s tech.

I'm sure you'll do great! And, if you do hit any snags, there's a lot of great folks on the forums that are happy to help!
Name: Pak'cha "Mithral"

Heya, does this still have room?
If yes, do you accept clueless newbies?
Hiiiii!!! Yes! there's still room.
