The city of Neverwinter stands proudly on the Sword Coast, west and north of Dessarin Valley. Fifty years ago, the city was nearly destroyed by the eruption of Mount Hotenow. Today, the city stands mostly rebuilt. It bustles with skilled tradespeople, intrepid adventurers, and hardy townsfolk.
Leadership in Neverwinter falls to Dagult Neverember, lord protector of the city—and your employer. The city lacks a formal militia, so Lord Neverember often hires mercenaries and adventurers such as yourselves to keep the city secure. Recently, a sinister cult has crept into the city’s bowels. You must infiltrate the cult’s hideout and root out its members before harm befalls the city!
I’d like to invite four to six people to play the Nest of the Eldritch Eye as a play-by-post game. This recruitment thread will close on Sunday, 26 May. I will select the party that evening and notify everyone in this recruitment thread. All characters start at 3rd-level. If you have a character from a previous campaign that ended and want to bring them in, that's great (subject to my approval of special feats/gear.) You may choose to roll 2 sets of ability scores here in the thread (reroll 1's once) and take one set, or use the standard ability score array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8). Your choice of starting equipment or starting gold. No evil alignments. No 3rd party content. Please provide the following information about the character you'd like to play:
Name: Race: Class: Background: Brief backstory/biography: Please provide a paragraph or two with your background story. Some potential questions to get you started (don't feel obliged to answer all of these =)Have you always lived in Neverwinter, or are you a recent immigrant? Do you live in the main town, or in one of the outlying farming communities? What is your current profession – feel free to tie in to one of the well-known businesses or guilds or create your own. How did you acquire your skills - or who trained you? What are your dreams and aspirations? Finally, what is one thing you are known for in town – be it a well-known ‘secret’ or a common rumor. (This last one I do want you to answer!)
About Me: I’m a veteran gamer. I prefer a good story to mechanics, but I will default to the rules. I have come to absolutely trust in the awesome power of randomness. I run PG-13 games. (Sometimes they can be dark, usually they are humorous, but I try to make them safe for the younger gamers…) I post once a day – sometimes more.
What I expect: - Post at least once a day. Let us know if you are going to be out of pocket for more than a day - I want everyone be involved but will move the story on without you if you disappear.
- Be creative! I’m looking for more than a one-line post saying “I hit the goblin.” Role-playing means developing fun interactions and conversations between the characters; they react to what happens to them and talk together as the adventure goes along.
- Play nice! Remember that you are part of a group who just want to have some fun. It’s ok to role-play your character, but not at the expense of everyone else.
- Make a commitment to your fellow players. Play-By-Post games can take a long time and sometimes feel like they’re moving forward very slowly. I promise to help move things along, but I also promise to try and keep everyone involved.
I look forward to meeting your characters – good luck!
Name: Argus Malchior Race: Human (Variant, Observer feat) Class: Wizard (Diviner) Background: Sage Backstory: Argus was born to a moderately wealthy merchant out of Waterdeep who could afford his second born son a good education. Young Argus showed great aptitude for learning and researching and eventually he was offered to be taught the magic of the weave by a small mystical order that used it's great insights into future events to discreetly manipulate events to retain order and balance in the Realms. Recently Argus has been sent on a mission to the city of Neverwinter to put an end to the machinations of a secret cult based there, joining forces with local heroes to accomplish this. He is a stern no-nonsense man who cares little for frivolities, instead serving his order with unquestioning loyalty. He has still something to learn about cooperation with those less serious and dermined.

Name: Khessa Cabbagefield Race: Human Class: Fighter 2 / Wizard 1 Background: Folk Hero Brief backstory/biography: Khessa was born to a peasant family, in a small village. At the age of 20 she is kidnapped, with her family, during a raid of drow slavers. With some luck she manages to free herself, along with some other slave from her village. After a a dangerous journey in the underground, during which she is forced on several occasions to defend herself in the hostile and unfamiliar environment (risking her life, but also honing her fighting skills), she manages to lead the slaves back to the surface. With her family still lost in drow hands, she becomes an adventurer, an hero of the people in particular; she will, when possible, help the defenseless (waiting to be able to help, some day, her family) and will satisfy the curiosity of the world that she had always had...
Since the sinister cult may be a threat to the Common Folk of Neverwinter, Khessa is certainly interested in answering Dagult Neverember's call... But she also has a second reason: if she can impress such a powerful man, perhaps it will be easier for her to organize an expedition into the Underdark one day to free her family!
Khessa is known for in town (in Neverwinter, I mean) for: - her love for cabbages - her sympathy for the 'Common Folk' (she considers herself even more of a cabbage farmer than a heroine - but since, due to her bad experiences, she has developed some practice with combat and magic, she is always ready to making use of these skills to help or defend those who lack them (preventing the tragedies that happened to her from happening to others is also her way of giving meaning to what she had to suffer).
(Orignal Rolls for second set where: 11, 15, 16,12,12,16)
Name: Nyxit Alltahail Race: Fairy Class: Warlock (Pact of the Fiend) 3 Background: Far Traveler Brief backstory/biography: Nyx (as he'd like to be called) never quite fit in with the other Fey lingering in the Neverwinter Woods. For obviously reasons. When he started his apprenticeship to become a warlock, everyone Expected him to pick Archfey as his patron. Little did they know that he already had another in mind. He picked the fiend in secret and started out of the Woods as quickly as he could, for he know the Woods would no longer be welcoming to one such as himself now.
This is what caused Nyx to start wandering the lands, looking for somewhere to call home, somewhere safe from those that would try to force others into a world not of their wanting or liking. After making himself at home on the outskirts of the city, he quickly become known as the harmless trickster. He would often ask for someone's name when first meeting them and if anyone would be so kind as to give him their name, he would immediately claim it as his own but let them still "use it" until he needed it.
When he learned about the cult within the city limits, he moved himself from the outskirts into the heart of the city to find out what he could over this evil threathening his new way of life. Everyone was so welcoming that they never questioned which patron he followed or what it asked of him. He's sad to know that they might find out all too soon what the answers to those questions are as he starts hunting the cult for the city And his patron.
Name: Katarina Spring Blossom of the Mystic Paws Race: Tabaxi Class: Barbarian (Path of Wild Magic) Background: Ruined (from the Book of Many Things; Alert feat) Backstory: Katarina was born into a life of luxury, daughter of Grand Duke Proud Shadow of the Mystic Paws. Strong magic ran within the blood of the Mystic Paws clan, derived from a powerful Fey ancestor. But... while her brothers and sisters grew into powerful sorcerers, Katarina couldn't manage to conjure even a simple cantrip. Slowly, it became clear that she didn't have the same gift that the other kittens did, and they began to look down upon her and bully her for this failing. Her elder sister, Vivian, was always the most cruel of Katarina's bullies...
Eventually, Katarina snapped, and in the process finally unleashed that spark of Fey magic in her veins. But a great cost, as when her rage subsided she was standing atop the broken and barely-living body of her sister. In horror and shame, Katarina fled from her home to take up the life of a common adventurer. Still, in spite of her best efforts to blend in and put her past behind her, the local people of Neverwinter can't help but speculate that she is anything but common. Her dress, the way she speaks, and the way she carriers herself all point to her noble upbringing.
Question: Is it okay to start her out with cloths, fine (for flavor as she is a disgraced noble) rather than traveler's cloths? Also, can we sell unwanted starting gear to purchase other items? I think I would prefer to make Katarina a sword-and-board Barbarian over a greataxe/greatsword Barbarian for flavor reasons.

Name: Bizzlenim Irontoe Race: Autognome Class: Cleric(2)[Peace]/Sorcerer(1)[Divine Soul] Background: Faceless Brief backstory/biography: Bzzt, from what little he came to understand, is the final creation of one Bozzlenim Irontoe; a rock gnome of Lanten left stranded on a deserted island following a teleportation experiment gone wrong. Although originally created to be a companion and eventual means of escape from the scattered wreckage left behind by the incident, the limited resources on the island and dangers within the nearby waters led to Bozzlenim's perishing. Or it would have, were it not for the prayers of Bizz being surprisingly answered by Gaerdal Ironhand, or at least a powerful celestial claiming to be in the deity's service.
Either way, neither denied the godsend or the prophetic message that promised their needed involvement in some future calamity. After this event, Bozzlenim would close his eyes for a final time, his body yet spent from the rigors of surviving up to that point. When he'd awaken again, he'd been "rescued" at last by sailing explorers returning from having found their fortunes elsewhere, but in the body of his creation. Confused, distraught, and with only vague notions of both new mission and deific encounter remaining in mind, Bozz was at a loss for much of the remaining journey to the mainland. But having piqued the interest of his incidental rescuers, to be more accurate) given his animated nature, many talks eventually culminated in his being dropped off in Neverwinter. Both for the sake of getting a fresh start, discover more about his new state of being, and piece together the prophecy. In the meantime, during the day Bizzlenim would play the humble role of an assistant maintaining the shop of a gnome physician. But at night, he would set out onto the streets to administer the wrench of justice upon those who would disturb the peace!! (AN: The last two line are a joke placeholder until the rest of the backstory is further refined)
OR(If Multiclass is not allowed/discouraged, see spoiler below for alternate character app)
Name: Femir Race: Githzerai Class: Bard Background: Entertainer Brief backstory/biography: If ever asked of his origins, Femir would happily spin some yarn about being a retired planeswalker, an astral pirate, or even the result of some mad sorcerer's experiment in trying to uncover lost knowledge of the Netherese! And if one were to believe such tale about his origins, then Femir would have plenty more to sell for coin, or for trade of other fantastical tales to further grow his fame as a storyteller! But in truth, he is but the orphaned son of a Githzerai whose hunt for a treacherous foe led her to journeying to a material plane world, becoming something of an adventurer due in part to unexpected events, but ultimately and tragically sacrificing her life in the defense of her son when an old enemy sought revenge. Thankfully, old allies of his mother would see to his care after, as Femir was little more than a toddler at the time, and settled down themselves within the City of Neverwinter in hopes of finding a measure of peace and potential protection that seemed otherwise less assured in more rural settlements.
Although Neverwinter would prove to have its troubles to contend with over the years, things were relatively peaceful growing up for Femir. But before becoming generally known as the 'Toad of Driftwood' for his frequent gigs acting as an entertainer of guests to the Driftwood Inn, he was merely the gangly, taciturn, green bean assistant of a local pair of alchemists(his parents) in his youth. Yet as much as he'd enjoyed the mixing of herbs and studying of books, and secretly that of seeing health return to those that partook of his family's wares, his course in life would forever be changed upon being gifted a keepsake of his mother; one he'd learned contained an echo of her spirit that would go on to guide and unlock his potential, both in psionics and the spiritual where it touched on the arcane. In time he even became so curious about his origin that he could no longer be content following in his parents footsteps, as his interest expanded beyond that of a humble shopkeeper. So, he'd take to that of the storyteller and bard(profession), aiming to earn whatever coin and information might someday provide a means to travel beyond just the city.
(Holy hell that first set looks busted... DM is this still ok with you? I'm more than happy to choose the second one though if you think this shouldn't be allowed)
Name: Seria Race: Dragonborn (Dragon-in-disguise) Class: Sorcerer (Draconic Bloodline Silver) Background: Far Traveller
Brief backstory/biography: Originating from Icewind Dale, Seria had just recently migrated to the bustling streets of Neverwinter, disguised as a human merchant for a living. Not much of both her past and present life is known, outside of the fact that she's settled in a busy marketplace and learning a few tricks of the trade thanks to watching several others like her compete to earn the maximum profit for themselves. But all she knows, from the vast rumours about this mysterious cult . Initially brushing it off as a distraction, the words eventually wrapped around her head during one occurrence when she was dealing with a bargainer who had apparently asked her if she knew about it, to which she replies she hadn't. A week after that meeting, Seria had been asking so many questions to herself, including who that cult is, what are their objectives are and why are they supposedly committing their acts deep beneath the depths of the overworld. Being a rather studious woman, she delved into various books and scrolls in solitude, but could never find the answers she had been aiming for, especially when she finds speaking to others incredibly difficult.
As time passed by, the seemingly disguised merchant has now been hooked into this mystery case outside of her business hours in hopes she could quell it before her new homeland should be destroyed; Having run out of options, she turns to an opportunity promoted by none other than Neverember himself. Ready to put her life on the line, she understands that the commoners look up to her just because she's headstrong and fearless even outside of trading. And Seria has proven to have the will to do so... as long as everyone can also respect the fact that she's hiding one gigantic secret: Her true form is not a young, youthful woman, but more like a young silver dragon.

Seria (Female Dragon-In-Disguise Sorcerer, Draconic Bloodline)
Heiboros is an Eladrin Elf, his emotions as fleeting as the seasons. He pranced through life in the spring, cloistered himself away in the fall, shut himself up to study during the winter, and was prone to rage in the summer. He learned to control the seasons of himself at 70 and usually stays in summer now. At the age of 100, at his coming-of-age ceremony, the sky darkened as undead, led by a lich sworn to Vecna, swarmed his village. His village could fight, and they did so valiantly, but without magic, they succumbed. The one mage of the city was old, and he was not powerful enough to hold off the entire horde of undead. Using the last of his magic, he teleported Heiboros and three of his classmates to safety, and they were spared. The four of them swore an oath, to rid the world of the undead scourge, but he slowly drifted away from his classmates, for as they studied the sword and the shield, he studied the Weave, but he never forgot the training of his youth. He used the power of Artifice to imbibe magic and power into the weapons of his youth, to fight off the undead that he'd sworn an oath against. He recently immigrated to Neverwinter to continue studying the Weave, but then he had a large number of his books stolen by the Cult. He is determined to get them back, and will soon discover that their god may be behind the attacks on his village.
Heiboros is known in town for skulking in dark corners with ancient tomes and pieces of machinery, followed by his homunculus servant and steel defender.

Name: Seria
Race: Dragonborn (Dragon-in-disguise)
Class: Sorcerer (Draconic Bloodline Silver)
Background: Far Traveller

Name: Heiboros Ganneva
Race: Eladrin Elf
Class: Artificer (Battle Smith)
Background: Cloistered Scholar
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
