OoC: Yup, he will I'm sure have a very charming exchange with Miri, and thank her for her generosity...
After breakfast, Darvin heads with Valji and Skiaceq into town, eager to spend some of his newfound gold. On his way he visits Miri to return her grandfather's bow and thank her for her generosity, letting her know how instrumental she was in saving the city from the dragon cult menace.
Miri is quite thankful, and rushes Darvin off to meet Aarvene, who thanks him for all the help he's given the city and gives him one of her newest weapon, a masterwork shortbow which makes the user more alert. He also finds 2 Potions of Greater Healing and an Uncommon Magic Item.
Skiaceqs bird eyes serve him well, and while shopping around town, he finds another two Potions of Greater Healing, an Uncommon Magic Item, and an Uncommon Wondrous Item. While the shopkeepers are greatful for the Aarakokra's help, they can't part with the magic items for less than 25gp. After all, magic is rare, and a shopkeepers has got to eat.
(If you're really attached to the fancy mundane Scimitar you found earlier, feel free to reskin it as the uncommon magic item at no cost)
Valji finds a small magic shop, which is more than happy to supply him with 2 Potions of Greeater Healing (or 2 spell scrolls of 3rd level or lower, if you'd rather learn some new spells), and an Uncommon Magic Item. Unfortunately, this shopkeep has just gotten back into town after heading out for more wares, and isn't quite as impressed with your exploits, asking for 50gp for the magic item.
The young shopkeeper looks in horror at the massive pile of copper pieces, and slowly begins counting two at a time. "Two... four... six... eight...."Several minutes pass, and the shopkeep loses count, starting all over again. Sweat begins dropping from his brow, a line forming with other customers looking for healing potions, minor protective charms (actually mundane in nature to Valjis trained eyes, although Skiaceq eyes the shiny baubles excitedly). More seconds and minutes tick by. "Four hundred and ninety-three, four hundred and ninety-four". He pauses for a second, taking out a copper piece that, upon closer inspection, is actually just a piece of glass which had been mixed in with the kobold hoard, reflecting the copper and blending in to the bunch. Throwing it dismissively at Skiaceq, he continues. "Four hundred ninety-five, Four hundred and ninety-six.
From the back room, a wizened old shopkeep comes waltzes in angrily. "Stewart! Whats the holdup..." He eyes the pile of coins and his apprentice counting. "What have I told you? Over 50 coins and you need to weigh them!" He pulls out a set of scales, sliding all the coins onto one plate before pulling out a set of iron weights and placing them on the other side, stacking one by one until the sides are almost matched. Taking three copper pieces and sliding them Skiaceqs way, he announces. "This is an impressive hoard you've accumulated, feathered one, but we have only 10 gold worth of copper here. With the gnomes 20, you're still going to need another 20 gold." He looks meaningfully to the rest of the group.
Darvin, who had been browsing around the shop unaware of the fiasco with the copper, strolls over with a smile when the older shopkeeper comes out. "My apologies for my friend here," he says, gesturing toward Skiaceq. "He's not from around here." He slides 20 gold toward the man, then separately pulls out another 4 gp and places it in the palm of the steward. "For your trouble," he says with a wink.
"Are you sure?!? I mean - thank you so much...but I don't want to take your money if there is something that you want or need..." Valji stammers, then smiles his thanks to his new friends. He had figured that the magical item would have to wait until some other time...but instead he is able to grab the two healing potions and a rather plain-looking leather bag with daisies and butterflies stitched on the sides. "Yes, I think this bag will come in handy as we continue to go forth and do good for all!"
With their supplies purchases, the adventurers gather together to head off to the south, map in hand.
What is the marching order? Who is navigating? Will the party be traveling at a fast pace, normal pace, go slow and stealthy, or some combination thereof?
As the group heads out of town, Darvin walks tall in his new slightly ill-fitting armor, shield strapped to his left arm, and a bevy of weapons strapped to his belt and chest. He gets some odd looks from some townsfolk as they pass by, a few teenagers snickering at the juxtaposition of his proud carriage and the awkward assortment of new equipment adorning him, and a few more tactful citizens waiting until he has passed to quietly put their palms to their faces. He does not exactly inspire confidence, as he periodically pauses to adjust his armor.
Once the group is clear of town he stops and says, "You know, maybe this armor was a mistake. Let me try something..." He takes a minute to unfasten the buckles on his studded leather and then tosses it in his bag, pulling out the green mask and a forest green pointed suede hat. He puts the mask on. As he does so, he feels a surge of magical energy through his body. "Now watch this," he says through the mask. He places the hat on his head. With a brief shimmer, he appears to be transformed into a human wearing a set of long hooded robes, much like those the party had seen on so many cult members.
"Not bad, eh? I got this thing for a song, quite literally, from a haberdasher in town who didn't know what he had. I figure this way we can continue at a normal pace, and if anyone spots us, they will think you two are my prisoners that I'm leading back to the camp. Probably ought to make the two of you look like you put up a fight, though." He pulls out his disguise kit and (assuming they agree) begins adding some blood and bruises to Valji and Skiaceq's faces and arms.
OoC: I'm assuming there's some sort of disguise kit roll involved to determine how convincing the mundane disguises are, but I'm not sure what ability score would apply if any.
Valji will be second or third in line - somewhere safely in the middle! He doesn't object to the ruse Darvin suggests, but will refuse to be actually bound in any way. "I need my hands to work my magic, you silly boy!"
Skiaceq had been taking the lead until now, distracted by memories of the last three days repeating in his head. At Darvin's suggestion, he falls back next to the others and offers his face. "Can you make your hands appear cuffed with an illusion?" he wonders to Valji.
While Darvin is working his magic, Skiaceq studies the map, taking note of the terrain at and around their destination.
Investigation: 1
OoC: What stands out to him? I'm guessing the map is fairly basic, showing landmasses but no terrain detail. Is the area hilly, mountainous, caves? How much can Skiaceq learn about the area in advance just from the map? Edit: Omg...
OoC: Darvin is wearing the mask now, but it's not visible while he is in disguise (Disguise self: "The illusion can include your clothes, armor, weapons, and other belongings on your person.")
"I don't know that you need to be cuffed, but perhaps you should put your weapons in Valji's marvelous new bag. Fortunately even should the need for sudden combat arise, neither of you is very dependent on them."
Skiaceq looks at the map, and comes up with little besides a feeling for the direction they need to head, but still confidently leads the battered-looking party to the south. (Make a Wisdom(Survival) check to see how effectively you navigate the path).
The party makes quick time heading towards the encampment pointed out on the map, only stopping briefly to don their disguises and hide their weapons just out of sight. (Darvin: Make a Dexterity check adding your proficiency bonus)
For the sake of time, we can do it off camera. It's fairly easy to get any mundane equipment you might need... will Darvin return the bow?
