There was the one where our ranger had the bag of magic beans and we arrived at a slave trader/bandit camp during a rain storm. He tied a bean to an arrow and fired it into the air so it would hit the middle of the camp and be immediately buried and watered. The roll on the bean spawned a Ziggurat with an Ancient Mummy right in the middle of the camp and wiped out most of the slave traders. We went in saved the slaves and ran from the mummy. I had a ring that spawned a giant pet snake and used that to bring the slaves down from the tower while I misty stepped to safety.
Not sure if I could keepnup Merkas’ prattle if I had to type all gangster all the time. Besides, he’s really paranoid of things that speak into his head after the scythe and learning that it’s current owner is stuck with it until death.
”M’yeah See, don’t be gettin’ the bosses way, see. Or yous be gettin’ out our way permanent like, see”
You can roll your checks with Advantage to understand what it is you have. If you wish to RP it out and study with Buckeran, that is also fine... but uhh... he just got a mouth full of butt smoke and is gonna need a minute.
Well I guess we take the first thing I roll to figure out the pendant problem: Arcana with advantage = double 7’s for a total of 8. I think I know but Merkas may not.
Oh and it seems Sera’s first command to her “pet” is “Don’t Worry”. Typical Demon behaviour…..
The DC was fairly low on that one. When I rolled for you on the trickery chart, I rolled fairly low, which usually results in a broken magic item. Examples of them were provided by Buckeran before he ate his candy.
Interestingly, it can be fixed and you can turn it into a fully functioning magic item. It's still going to be quirky. A lot of the magic items in this region will be, and I'll be delving into the homebrew section much more often. Magic spoils over time, and a lot of these artifacts were lost in terrible wars and were damaged, then sunblasted, and eroded by centeries of wind and sand. Only the most powerful ancient relics can survive that kind of abuse without decay. If you find a shiny, glistening magic item on this path to the dragon's lair... chances are it has insane powers. Even then, there's the blight caused by the abandoned dragon's lair that has unpredictable affects on magic, food, water, and the weather. Who knows how it would twist a highly powerful magic artifact that's been hiding in the wastes for thousands of years?
I'll post again tomorrow, where the short rest is over. Today is a gauntlet for me, and I didn't get a good night's sleep. So, I'll probably crash early. If I get a chance to post later, I will. But you're welcome to RP a bit, or venture out into the storm. It's your sandbox. In this case... kinda literally.
For all intents and purposes, Nare is the Guild Steward. They're going to manage resources at the guild while you're gone. This is the best way to deal with the fact that Sundial went inactive right after they were promoted into the guild. As such, they can also lead CR1 bounties with a party of three other guild members, to help you accrue funds.
If your party decides to leave Santekh, Nare will remain behind as its official representative, and run guild matters during your absence. Stl will accrue at the guild, and you'll have Bastion turns that you can manage, even while away from the guild hall. So, you can build satellite locations, or even make a new HQ somewhere else, and turn the Santekh location into a satellite location if you wish.
I've added Cyrus to the Campaign Notes. Feel free to check on his stats and lore. I'm adding the guild members kinda slowly right now, because my health has been hit-or-miss lately. But when my mind is sharp, I'll add the other members.
I really need to reorganize the Campaign Notes. I think it's getting hard to read and reference. But that's a whole other all-day project. I wish tables worked better in the Beyond. This whole thing would be so much easier to organize in tables.
Holiday season's are when campaigns tend to slow to a crawl. If you think you're going to be out for a couple weeks between now and mid-January, please let us know. It's no big deal. Life goes a little crazy this time of year.
Which is why I was only soft-prodding. But thank you for checking in. ☺️
Sera and her mission to Solomnia to face her oppressors.
Merkas and his cross-planar mission to Hepmonaland and the towers of madness.
Hastos and the weapons with the power to rewrite fate... possibly a race to them.
Chaos ensues. The party is torn... the dangers are unknowable but certainly high! Every choice seems to lead you to prison, madness, corruption, or destruction!
And what of Tekel and his scythe? What opportunities and/or risks does he pose now that you know he's no longer just a primping fop with shiny armor? That over your month of downtime, he's become a hardened warrior?
Btw: MrUncleTio, though the value of that book is unknowable, it's knowledge is worth a fortune. You could literally buy your own land and title with it, if you can figure out where the last chapter is. Even without it, it's still worth a hefty price. Want a second bastion? Easy. Want your own battallion? No problemo. Want host a summit with allied kings? Done. It's value is in trade, not in coin though. Although the right wizard or artificer would gladly resurrect your whole damned party for just a chance to study that book for a few days.
Merkas is walking around with the Demonomicon of Iggwilv in his bag of holding, Sera’s armour is influencing her emotions, and Hastos seems to be the interest of every suitor in town, and we got the making or a grand adventure, Romantic Novel, or Tragic ending all at once.
It's important to remember that in my campaign, Evil isn't a matter of morality. Both Kasi and Ororana are Evil aligned. But neither of them are bad people. I changed it to allow for more flexibility in gameplay.
Evil simply means you have no compunctions against killing. Kasi could slay an entire army of Dragon Army warriors and sleep soundly that night without a hint of guilt or PTSD. Ororana collects the heads of DA soldiers for chump change. Killing doesn't phase her either. What haunts her is why she killed, and who she killed. But if an opponent raises a weapon at her, their life is forfeit.
The same is true for magic items. The Demonomicon of Iggwilv is Evil aligned. And it's definitely dangerous. But its danger has nothing to do with whether or not it's Evil aligned. Weilded by a person with a strong will, it can be used to do good things. But those things, generally, will involve death and destruction.
If the Living Armor had an alignment, it would be Good aligned. Its loyalty is set to its host that it feeds on. And its primary function is to protect. It literally cannot take life...yet. But Buckeran could train it to. Good aligned creatures do not deal lethal damage... even at the risk to their own life. They can hunt for survival, and fight threats. But their preference is to leave their opponents alive. This doesn't mean that Good aligned creatures are always good. They may keep them alive to torture them, or toy with them, or to enslave them.
Good and Evil as alignments exist seperately from good and evil as moral presuasions and concepts of right and wrong. This allows me to introduce characters in the game that have pre-aligned statblocks without being restricted in behavior by their alignment. It allows people, magic items, and PCs to be complicated and messy.
Buckeran is CG. But he was a bandit and theif. He still doesn't have a murderous bone in his body. Furthermore, the Scythe couldn't appeal to his thirst for glory, because he doesn't possess it. He's content with his accomplishments and doesn't seek more. His only real weakness is his thirst for adventure. It would take someone like Buckeran (but not Buckeran) to weild a weapon or magic item like that.
Tekel... probably is not a good pick to weild the Scythe. But Buckeran has a tendency to see the best in people, while also possessing a kind of moral ambiguity that seems to come with age. So, as far as he's concerned, Santekh is blessed to have such a powerful ally serving their cause with such an overpowered weapon.
