Blue Spot is surprised by the two blows that rain down on him from an unexpected height and takes both blows to the skull, shaking his head angrily to chase away the dizziness.
Now Roxana, Aidwyn and Dawnborn are up for Round 3!
Roxana continues to stay put to take careful aim at the blue spot creature. She then looses an arrow from her bow. (Shortbow Attack: 26, Damage: 9 + 7 sneak attack)
Blue Spot was already preparing to counterattack with his harpoon raised to strike, but Roxana shoots an arrow with the precision she is known for and the steel tip lodges in the monster's mouth, piercing first the palate and then the brain.
The underwater creature collapses, dead, against the spiral staircase, while a large gush of its blood clouds the water all around.
Gaer winks at the Shadow Archer: "In any argument, there is no denying that you have... a good point, my love!"
Gratz! Combat won! You may act outside of the rounds now.
"Well, anyone know what those creatures were?" Roxana asks, still casting looks about in case there might be more. She cautiously heads over to the dead ones to see what they might have. (Perception: 22)
Both Gaer and Anita, almost simultaneously, have an intuition about the nature of these creatures!
The tiefling ranger hypothesizes: "They must be Merrow... members of an aggressive race of predators that usually haunt waters, preying on any edible creature that crosses their path, from what I have heard long ago. These savage monsters snatch and devour unwary prey, hauling drowned corpses back to their underwater lairs to feed."
"They could be, indeed..." the arcane scoundrel agrees "I have come across mentions of them, during my studies with Rash... It is said that their monstrous appearance is the result of a mutation induced by none other than Demogorgon, the infamous Prince of Demons - perhaps it is also due to his influence that they are creatures with a tendency towards violence and bullying."
Meanwhile, Roxana notices that the room is devoid of furniture, but some of the fallen stones have been fixed with macabre festoons made from bones tied together with string. The bones are mostly humanoid and (perhaps more interestingly) one of the large skulls (probably belonging to an ogre?) contains a multitude of small gems!
There are 5 gems in total: 1 translucent brown with golden center, 1 opaque gray-black, 1 translucent, with circles of green, 2 translucent striped blue.
Another detail that the enterprising adventurer notices is that the walls of the room are frescoed. The long stay under water has faded the frescoes but she manages to recognize that they mainly represented a noble couple, a lord and a lady, in different environments and situations (although always together). The Lord must have had short brown hair and the Lady must have been particularly thin and have long black hair.
Roxana nods at the explanations Gaer and Anita give. "Hmm, Merrow. I wonder how they got here." She notes the skull that strangely contains some gems and gathers them up to put into her pack. Her attention turns to the frescoes on the walls. "It's a shame the water had faded these images. I'm sure the lord and lady in them must have enjoyed them long ago."
"It seems we could either go west from here or backtrack a bit to the north," she says, pondering the options. "I suppose my vote would be to head back north. We can check out the areas we haven't looked at yet then come back this way later."
"Sounds good," Gaer approves. "Plus, we have no shortage of route options, to the north..."
Mival in the meantime passes his green eyes on those of the other party members, curious to hear their opinion too - and eager to continue the exploration with these very experienced friends, who have managed to ally themselves with an ancient 'mage' like Khellbluen and who seem to be able to conclude every battle in the space of a handful of seconds!
The party takes Roxana's advice and heads north. At the crossroads, you can see that towards the north the corridor will shortly turn west. The street to the east instead leads to a room whose details would certainly become more defined as you get closer. The short street to the west instead opens almost immediately into a room that is roughly triangular in shape, with its only (doorless) entrance on the eastern vertex, which is perpendicular to the center of the opposite western wall. The western wall is 15' from the entrance and is 25' long in total.
The room is cluttered with trinkets and knick-knacks of all kinds. Many must have been broken and ruined by water, judging by the widespread dirt, but the metal and ceramic ones are still recognizable (shards of weapons, pieces of chains, broken mugs, fragments of colored plates).
In the room rests, sitting on a pile of junk, a large crustacean monster, equipped with four legs, a short finned tail, two large and menacing claws and a forest of short red tentacles surrounding its mouth.
Aidwin, who is the first to see it, immediately recognizes the creature: it is of the same species as the monster that, during her journey to Waterdeep to consecrate herself to Lathander, had attacked her and her traveling companions, near a lake, in an attempt to steal her shield in the name of the 'fish gods'!
Anyway, the monster immediately notices our heroes so... ...time to roll for initiative again!
Roxana will step forward then move a step to the east in order to allow others to pass. She knocks an arrow and quickly fires at the creature. (Shortbow Attack: 16, Damage: 11 piercing)
The crustacean monster is slow, so Roxana has time to take careful aim and her arrow slips between two plates of the monster's carapace, evidently stinging the flesh, judging by the indignant sound it emits.
Gaer follows the Shadow Archer, but moves even further east, so that whoever wants to attack from range can take up position. He nocks an arrow and hopes that the unusual conditions (shooting underwater) do not compromise the effectiveness of the shot too much...
...But, unfortunately for the tiefling ranger, his arrow, although hitting close to Roxana's, narrowly avoids insinuating itself in the same gap and is deflected by the monster's body-armor.
In the meantime, Aidwyn holds her position, ready to strike when the enemy advances into the narrow passage (which should hinder its movements quite a bit) and Dawnborn rushes forward, moving decidedly north, to be ready to support her beloved in case of need.
Rash, Spira, Mival, Khellbluen, Anita, Unseen Warrior and Darvin are up! Any order.
[[ OOC: Taking Turns for characters who haven't done so yet ]]
Rash maneuvers to get behind Roxana and tries to hit the tough monster with a freezing ray.
Meanwhile, Khellbluen takes up position just north of Aidwyn and extends his arms crackling with magical energy barely held back enough to suddenly charge a lightning bolt at the monster.
Darvin meanwhile takes up position just south of Aidwyn, ready to attack the monster as soon as he comes within range.
Unfortunately, there isn't much room for Spira, Mival, Anita and Unseen Warrior to maneuver, and they don't really see how to contribute for now.
