The kobolds, cruel and cunning in equal measure, have become a festering blight upon the borderlands. Once content to skulk in their stinking warrens and raid livestock, they have grown bold of late—brazen enough to enslave goblins, hobfolk, and worse. Whispers now tell of iron brands and bone pens, of screams echoing through the pine-thick hills where no honest man dares tread.
Elvyn, gods preserve him, was no longer young—his sword hand slower, his eyes clouded—but the fire of justice still burned in his breast. Once, he had ridden with kings and broken brigand lords across the rivers. In his twilight years, he sought peace in these troubled lands, and when he saw the kobolds' evil, he took up arms once more. He vanished soon after. Most thought him dead—or worse.
But now a goblin, half-mad and bleeding from a dozen lash-marks, has stumbled into the town of Dunwarren. Between coughs and cries, he told of a pit where Elvyn is held—starved, bound, but still alive. The council, cowards in robes and rings, dare not send their own. So they have turned to you, four sellswords with little more than steel and desperation to your names.
Bring Elvyn back alive, and they promise you a hundred golden stags—enough coin to fill a purse or slit a dozen throats. But mind this: the kobolds are not what they were. There is a hunger in them now, an anger deeper than goblin chains or old grudges. If you can learn the root of their fury… well, that might earn you more than coin. Or get you all killed.
Choose wisely. Ride soon. The sun sets early in the hills, and darker things than kobolds stir when it does.
I am looking for 4 level 1 characters for this adventure. Post your character concept and rolled stats below (ones re-rolled once only). I will then send a private message and invite to the chosen four.
I have not made the switch yet but I am fine with 2024 character builds in the game. Porting the adventure from four against darkness so there will be some homebrew and flex in the rules anyway. Let's see if everything is as compatible as they say it is :)
Backstory: Rhys was an unremarkable sage. For hundreds of years he sat in his tower studying magic and documenting his findings. He was friendly with the other villagers but had become detached after witnessing the passing of multiple generations. For an elf attachment seemed foolish but Rhys would travel with the hunters of the village to get food when he needed. This became his only connection for an elf that lived among humans. As all things in life this had to come to an end. The kobolds came without warning and within hours the village was set ablaze. Rhys was lucky that his tower was far enough away from the main force. By the time Rhys noticed that there was an attack it was too late. He managed to help a few villagers but running seemed like the only option. All of the people and places Rhys knew were gone and all of his work was destroyed. Now Rhys finds himself in the town of Dunwarren with an opportunity to fight off this evil and hopefully save the poor soul Elvyn.
Rowan Crackernutt is a young half elf who has some roots in his culture but was found in the woods alone by a town guard at the age of 7 or 8. His family were dead and their remains were found, having been killed by some form of invisible creature. Once in town he was passed from church group to church group who housed and educated him until he turned 15. This is when the money ran out from the remains of his families possessions. All he has left is a single golden earing which he remembers his mother wearing, which is his most treasured possession. His ambition was to be a Wizard, but he could never find anyone to train him so when he was, er cast out of the foundling home, he ended up working in a tavern. Having a keen eye he became a bit of a card shark, well a baby one at least.
A handsome lad (even by the standards of the fair folk) and with a rare gift of the gab, he can now days be found playing cards in taverns and bars, usually with visiting merchants and guards. He is seen as a good, but cautious player, never making a fortune, but clearly skilled enough to make a living and is well known in the merchant and trade district.
His affable nature and hanging with the guards has made him a "cultivated source" for the local, shall we call them "Unemployed gentle persons who are paid by the hour or specific contract?" For folk like this he is known to be a good person that, for a few coppers and silvers, has been known to be an informed source of information on the comings and goings of traders and people who frequent the merchant quarter.
A few months ago he found that by wishing he was cleaner, he magically became cleaner and has over the past nine months or so, come into some powers he didn't know he had. He thinks this is a legacy of his parents, but in fact is the after effect of the spells that killed his family. He is learning what these skills mean whilst working through these new experiences. More recently he has been trying to meet with people who have the gift of magic, to learn more about what is happening to him.
Thus players may encounter Rowan in a bar, looking for a mark, opps I mean a new friend with all the risks that may entail......
Zoloff is a Kobold who has been having a particularly rough time of it lately and has taken to some petty thievery to make ends meet, so to speak. He's not exactly the brave or adventuring type but when he learns of this opportunity to strike out at the very Kobolds who have made his life so miserable lately, he jumps at it!
Would probably work best if they were the pal (or sidekick) of someone more respectable so that they could hide in the shadows and kind of join in on the sly? Since I am assuming the people hiring wouldn't trust them very much...
since we cannot reroll ones more than once, the scores would be:
18, 15, 10, 13, 14, 6
Dealuri Frumos translates as "beautiful hills", which accurately described her. If her beauty doesn't make you forget that you are yet again losing to this soldier (Fighter class) at cards, her voice and hand harp will and will give you strength you never thought you had. Dealuri pays no attention to the names of kings and cities and gods, as she will cheerfully tell you, but can shot a rabbit from 200 feet with her longbow, as she will regularly demonstrate to supplement the night's meal.
Vakas appeared to be a trustworthy sort of guide. Appeared to be. He seemed to know his way around a map, he would lure marks, preferably rich out-of-towners for custom tours of the countryside, sights in the city, whatever they seemed keen on for a nice distraction. Occasionally he would work with partners, anyone who would help with the story. You get the picture.
He happened to be sitting in the wrong seat on the wrong day.. that being the seat that had a good vantage point to the goblin they brought in screaming and crying, bleeding all over the wooden floor. He just happened to overhear the story. He understood the goblin words that spilled out in between sobs. Dammit. Curiosity always killed the friggin cat. It might do the same for him…
FYI, haven't done a play by post before. Not sure how it works. If you're still recruiting my character pitch is:
Skritch Nubbins
A Ratatosk Ekore (sentient speaking squirrels basically, from Kobold Press' Book of Ebon Tides) druid.
When he gets to third level, he'll become a Moon Druid. So, lots of morphing from a cute little squirrel who normally does supporty, utility things, into a bear and just does much carnagy things. Then back into a squirrel person.
With his low Ch I guess his fur would be a bit motheaten and unkempt.
I imagine he'd be likeable and trusting. V helpful where he could be. And then an absolute berserker in beast mode.

I haven't played in around two years but I'm hoping to get back into d&d. I just may be a little rusty on the rules.
I'm also down to play any class or role the group needs filled.
