A party of four arrives at a small village on the coast. This party works under the auspices of The One-Shot Wonder Guild, an up-and-coming adventuring company.
The dour mood within this coastal fishing village is palpable. Melancholy citizens sit outside their modest, wooden abodes and stare wistfully at you; your presence providing a brief distraction from their current plight. Despite the village’s proximity to the coast, there is a distinct lack of activity in the water – no fishing, surfing, or even children playing. Something has terrified the people who live here.
A half-elven male approaches from the longhouse. "I'm glad you made it," he ways with a smile, though there is stress in his voice. "I'm Pag. I'm in charge of safety in this village." Pag’s navy-colored armor is decorated with fish bones, beads and colorful string, as is his flowing, blonde hair. "...you are the adventurers we requested from the guild, aren't you?", he asks after sizing you up with a little uncertainty.
Nyx (with a calm, assured tone and a small grin, fluttering about as he talks): “Nyx Darkglint, at your service. We might not know what’s lurking beneath the surface just yet, but I’m confident we’ll be the ones to turn the tides for this village. Let’s see what we can chase away from the shadowy depths here.” He leans in a lil, "Do you have any leads on where we should start? The ocean is a pretty big place for... someone of my stature", Nyx says with a slight laugh.
Pag nods. "The beast is large, with a body like a whale and a neck like a giraffe. It has moved into the waters near our village, feasting on fish. It has so far injured six of our villagers." He frowns. "To make matters worse, we are low on the healing herbs which grow on an island nearby, which we can no longer safely reach."
He then explains his plan. "If we can repair one of our damaged boats, we can sail out to open waters and bait the creature away from the village, and ambush it." He then, as he must, explain what's in it for you. "If the creature is slain or otherwise driven off, the village elder Cuda will be eager to reward your efforts."
“Well that sounds very good! A long neck gives ample space for my Greataxe to find a home.”, Dain says jokingly, but with a slight somber note, recognizing the plight the town is in.
Dain is a Dwarf with a braided beard and bulging muscles, which are clearly used to wield the giant axe and maul he carries around.
“Would you need help fixing the boat or do you have craftsmen willing to take up the work?”
Julienne steps up to Pag, adjusting her backpack. "So how did this beast attack the villagers? Did it bite them or topple over their boats or something?" Looking over the coast, she frowns lightly "Can't blame the fella for liking it here, especially if there is good fish to be found." Looking back at Pag and the group, she asks "What could we bait it with to willingly leave this resort and all-you-can-eat buffet?"
Pag answers Dain, "We have the know-how to repair the boat, but assistance with collecting lumber would speed up the process. There is a thicket nearby with trees suitable for the task. Elder Cuda has granted permission for them to be harvested."
He then addresses Julienne's questions. "Both; it has a nasty habit of ramming boats, then taking nips at those tossed overboard. As to bait, I would defer to Ethel Longreeler, our village's expert angler; she will know what sort of fish we should catch to use as bait, if anyone does."
Hefting his axe, he looks in the direction indicated when mentioning the trees. "Alright, I should be able to cut down a few. Can you provide a guide to led us there and point out which trees are acceptable to cut?"
"I can help gather some wood timber for the boat. I'm somewhat skilled with wood construction as well. Where do we need to go for the timber?" Bao asks
Pag is happy to see your enthusiasm. "The thicket is close; I can guide you there. But, we must be on alert; it is an overgrown area, where beasts and monsters may lie hidden..."
Pag leads all who are willing to follow toward into the dense vegetation inland... Feel free to make Perception checks, those of you who go along!
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Bao, your teacher did not neglect to have you train your senses keenly. More than once, you notice the glint of light off a pair of eyes low down in the shadows of the thickets. Each time you announce its presence, it slinks off back into the vegetation, seemingly unwilling to confront the party on fair terms. Whatever it was, it eventually seems to give up, and you don't see those beastly eyes again.
Pag and the party arrive at the site where lumber is to be harvested. Each of you that wish may make an attempt to get down a tree, in whatever way you see fit. (Suggestions might include: Slashing weapon attacks, Athletics checks, Carpentry Tools checks... But if you have another idea go for it!)
Pag makes the first attempt, swinging a hefty machete at a suitable tree: (Attack: 11 Damage: 7) After some time working, the tree falls to the ground. "Alright, one of you give it a try now; I'll be on watch to make sure nothing sneaks up on us," Pag says.
Wanting to hurry and be done with the labor so they could get to monster hunting and collecting their bounty, Dain puts out his greataxe and marks a spot on the trunk of the tree. A quick practice swing to make sure his aim is true and then WHAM! He slams his axe into it.

Bao is on high alert as they move along inland, his ears open and eyes looking about for danger. Perc: 22
D&D since 1984
Fran appears in the place of Nyx, looks around and dashes off after the others heading for the trees.
Fran is not as alert for trouble as she usually is. (rolled nat 3 for total of 7 on character sheet), instead just chasing after the others.
Dain follows, casually alert for danger. (Perc 17)
Bringing up the rear, Julienne follows the group into the forest, keeping an eye and ear open for danger, or dinner (Perception: 14).

Seeing Pag attack a tree with a machete, she talks to herself for a bit. "Nn. Can chop tree?" A brief pause and she adds, "Nn. Like treant."
She the takes the large sword off her back and starts hacking at the indicated tree. (attack 25 - crit, damage 23)
A single chop is all Fran needed; a second tree is felled.
Wanting to hurry and be done with the labor so they could get to monster hunting and collecting their bounty, Dain puts out his greataxe and marks a spot on the trunk of the tree. A quick practice swing to make sure his aim is true and then WHAM! He slams his axe into it.
(24 to hit; 12 dmg)
The great axe makes quick work of the third tree, which falls with a satisfying crash. Pag is clearly impressed by the tabaxi and dwarf logging team.
