"No," she looks sheepishly to the party. "I... I promised...," she adds as another wave crashes on deck.
The water then suddenly calms but the rain continues to fall.
"WHAT. WAS. THAT," Niska exclaims from the wheel as the aasimar looks critical at everyone on deck.
The rest of the night passes with only rain plaguing the journey. The crew then wakes the next day to find calm water. The kids have settled into their hammocks and Niska's still at the wheel. Nick prepares another amazing meal while the others get about the business of their duties. Folzi back in the crow's nest and spots another ship in the distance!
Looking a bit sad that the beast is not to return, Folzi stomps on the deck and turns back to Nick. He tosses the wand to the gnome. "Damnit! I just wanted something cool to ride around on like Hrain."

"I can arrange that, boss,"Nick replies with a wink and a grin. Pocketing the wand, he finds himself a hammock to curl up in for some rest and study before firing up the galley again after the storm.
OOC: I didn't have Nicknack learn the Identify because it can be cheesy and contentious, but I would like to use the short rest-related rules for getting to know magic items, to learn about what we've found so far.

Father Pat arrives on deck to see the Manticore flying off into the storm and at the same time it appears the storm seems to calm. He turns to Niska and says "I'm a simple soldier but do you think there is a connection between the beast leaving and storm ceasing or is just the vagaries of the weather spirits?"
The identify spell is the fastest way to reveal an item’s properties. Alternatively, a character can focus on one magic item during a short rest, while being in physical contact with the item. At the end of the rest, the character learns the item’s properties, as well as how to use them.

Father Pat works to make things ship-shape again. As he works he draws on his pool of healing power to restore the hitpoints he lost in the damage from the Manticore's tail spikes - the 6 points he took in his own right and the additional 6 points he took on Hrain's behalf.
Still looking somewhat crestfallen from the previous night's episode, Folzi keeps his eye more to the sky than the waters. "Hmmph...," he pulls put his copper wire and speaks rather unenthusiastically. "Captain, we're coming on another boat."

Nick's study yields it's a wand of dominate monster which functions like the spell with 3 charges a day resets at dawn each day with WIZ save DC17.
Niska climbs to the crow's nest and takes out a spyglass.
"Those are... the same colors we removed from the ship after we took over," the aasimar says grimacing offering the glass to Folzi. "We're in trouble if they catch us," she adds leaping off the crow's nest onto rigging towards the sails and unfurling yet another sail which immediately pulls the boat forward with almost a jolt! "ALL hands on deck enemy ship approaching," the aasimar bellows swing down from the sail on a rope her heavy boots striking the deck with thud! "Positions," she yells next.

"Hope your Traveler can help us through this little war you may have started as I'm not the best of swimmers." Folzi takes the spyglass and has a look at the approaching ship for himself.
Lyra looks around to the other kids manning the canons. "So...did anyone of you actually use these before?" She asks, as she does her best to help Father Pat make sense of how to operate the heavy weaponry.
Folzi spies a ship with blood red colors and the same burning fist insignia on their sails as their ship. Although they aren't flying colors! The ship then alters course heading straight for the party! I looks smaller and sleeker than thier ship but what it lacks in size it overmatches in speed! It approaches quickly but is still a good 200ft away approaching fast!
Below deck Lyra asks her question and nearly all of the teens raise their hands.
"We had to warn off another ship coming into port when we took over this one! It's odd tho during the dragon's havoc this ship went untouched," he adds shrugging as he comes over to Lyra and Pat giving them a run down of the operation if a canon before scurrying back to his own. Only six of the eight cannon have been ready with 2 teens apiece running them.
OOC: Lyra/Pat you'll use improvised weapon rolls to fire. I leave it up to y'all who does what! One will load DEX check with aid from the other, then one of you will aim survival check and the other will fire improvised weapon rolls.
Father Pat picks up the barrel of powder and says to the kids "did you ever see how much of this stuff they put in?"
Father Pat turns to Lyra and says "I never was much good at range stuff - more of a closer quarter fighting type of guy - so what say I look after the loading and you look after what comes next?"
Lyra looks back at the kids, still a little uncertain. "And are we waiting for some sort of signal, or are we free to just fire away...?" She then crouches down near the ammunition supplies to have a closer look at the cannon balls, a sparkling in her eyes indicating that she has something in mind.

Father Pat says “I’ll get it loaded”which he proceeds to do following the instructions of the older teen (Dex check - 21). He then turns to Lyra and says “it’s loaded as best I know how, whether that’s good enough, only time will tell. It’s up to you to fire when you’re ready but if I was you I’d wait for a signal from the Captain - Niska that is - cos I suspect the other Captain Hrain knows as much about these guns as I do which ain’t much at all!”
