Startled by the sudden re-appearance of the beast, Lofty dives for the sewer and looks a fool as he comes up gasping and panicked. A moment to recover his cool, and he's all business. "Right, infiltration successful, I believe I promised a reward." Lofty reaches into his rucksack and pulls out one of the health potions, handing it to Ryloos. "Nicely done. How far till we reach the gatehouse? This place gives me the creeps."
Lofty motions for Helios to take the lead and waits to the others to fall in before bringing up the rear. He reaches through the fog and finds Xantlin. The half elf had an uncanny ability to sense danger. He whispers "Listen close, we'll hear it before we see anything down here."
Xantlin has our highest perception score with a +7, so I'm offering him guidance (+1d4) for the check. That stuff about how we moved out is me suggesting a marching order. Helios and I have the highest AC scores, so I sandwiched the rest of you between us.
Buoyside trudges through the water a moment before ultimately deciding to flop on his back to float. "We're in it now, champs. Whadda'ya reckon, cap'n?" He continues to stare up towards the sky, though he can only see the dull grey fog, and then he spreads his arms wide and attempts to resheath his blade. It's a futile attempt, the length is simply too long to do alone. He gets back to his feet and makes his way to HELIOS.
"You were a dynamo out there! Really impressive stuff. I love you." He places a hand on the monks shoulder and lowers his head, a faint shine reflects off his fair skin as if every bit of sunlight that can penetrate the dense mist is focused entirely on him.
Buoyside uses Lay On Hands to restore 10hp for HELIOS (I'll have 15 remaining HP I can give out until our next rest, figures I should hold onto some of that)
"That should help you feel a little better, yeah? Now what do you say, help me sheath my blade?" He offers the sheath to HELIOS
Ryloos sniffs the air. The scent of the city and the sewers still remains. She begins recalling all of her entries into the sewers from her past.
"Approximately every 30 yards there are drains feeding into the sewers. We will know a drain that comes from a gatehouse, barracks, or bank if it has bars on it. If I remember correctly, there are two barred drains roughly 120 yards down: one on the right and one on the left. Although, I don't recall which is the gatehouse drain."
HELIOS takes the sheath from Buoyside and slowly slides it down the blade. "It seems very inefficient to even have a sheath for your blade if you cannot use it yourself. Perhaps you could find someone who could create you a device that would make it possible to do on your own. When all of this is done I will introduce you to my creators, perhaps they could design something."
He turns away from Buoyside without acknowledging or even appearing to register the healing power that was given to him. "I will take the lead Sergeant, Please indicate the direction you think we should travel."
Though largely obscured by the mist, the sewers are lit by faint blue glow that seems to emanate from the everdistant walls. You are seemingly alone, accompanied only by the constant syncopation of condensation falling from the ceiling. But there again, in the distance, you think you hear a heavy thud of something weighty falling into the water. As you walk, you swear you feel something slick and squishy slide past your leg, only to vanish. You are about halfway to the grate when Ryloos, leading your group pauses. Nearby, you hear a very loud splash and, several seconds later, a series of ripples come racing across the otherwise still surface of the water.
As you watch the ripples pass by you, you are surprised by a sound of distant roaring - something deep and hoarse and furious, an indeterminate but considerable distance behind you.
"Stop. We're not alone down here." Ryloos says as she feels the faint ripples pass her leg.
Then the roaring reaches her. "We're really not alone down here." She looks to Lofty. "Why don't we pick up the pace? We need reach the drains and bust them down before whatever the **** is back there reaches us." Her keen nose picks up the foul smell that the roaring carries. "We need to hurry," she thinks to herself.
As he hurries along with the group, Xantlin tries to focus on the sounds of the sewer. What could have caused the water to react the way it did? It didn't make any sense... Nothing large could have followed them through the drain that the WUSSes had crawled down. But if there was already something here, why didn't it react right away? Were all the noises made by the same source?
Sergeant lofty turns to face the long dark tunnel behind him as the roar echoes past. He hefts his shield into position and holds his spear just under the surface of the water where a charging enemy might not notice it. Such trickery would be of no use if what he suspected was true, but it bolstered his confidence to imagine he had the upper hand. "I have a feeling the locals aren't any more eager to greet their visitor than we are. We need a plan for if that thing finds us. Any ideas?"
"Perhaps, we should let it find us. And together, as friends, we will kill it and heft bits of it up high in celebration. Maybe birds will come down and land in our palms to eat the bits of severed flesh." Buoyside smiles. "Imagine, all of us holding up the mushy remains of an evil beast, covered in birds. What a sight! They will be able to see us from hundreds of miles away, birds n' all, with the mist gone." His smile falters a bit, and he shrugs. "What I'm saying, Cap'n, is we won't save this world if we constantly flee in fear. We must be courageous and holy to open our jaws to the sweet tongue of victory."
Your keen half-elf senses are limited by the fog. You ascertain that whatever caused the ripples likely fell and/or leapt into the water from one the support arches. The roof is low - only about three and a half yards high. Based on the sound of the water's cavitation, you surmise that the object was somewhat heavier than a man but smooth in texture. The gentle current of the water belies your senses...but you may think you notice a slight change in the water's flow as if something paddled by you. The roaring, on the other hand, was much more distant...and much more ominous. You think you maybe hear a distant thrashing, as if something large is clawing its way against resistance. The sound is very faint but growing in volume. Your ears are more sensitive given your half-elf origins, so only you appreciate this noise.
ALL
The roaring ceases to be replaced once again by silence, the gentle gurgling of the current, and the occasional plop of falling condensate. You move slowly forward, following Ryloos' lead.
Out of the periphery of your vision, you notice something slide off one of the pillars and into the water. You rub your eyes - the thing was seemingly translucent and vaguely insectoid in morphology, but you have the distinct impression of a toothy rostrum. A series of ripples pass by you, followed by utter stillness. The whole reservoir is seemingly still and silent, spoiled only by the sound of your ragged breathing and a faint humming from HELIOS' core. HELIOS, oblivious to the obvious tension in the room, turns and holds up one finger, preparing to address Lofty and the team. Before he can speak, however, the water about 15 feet to your fore explodes and a massive, centipede-like creature comes hurtling through the air.
Ryloos only barely avoids the attack thanks to her preternatural speed and dexterity, executing a remarkable triple axel spin, her weapons already drawn and readied as she lands. The creature lands heavily in the water, before swimming off at a rapid pace. Having had a better view, the creature resembles a centipede with the maw of a crocodilioid, its skin translucent such that you can see its gizzard and rudimentary aerodigestive tract. It clearly means you harm.
Battle time again, gents. See the details on glass gators listed below. Sorry to say but you all have DISADVANTAGE on your attack rolls, meaning that you roll two dice and then use the worse/lower of the two numbers. There may be plural gators...and your blood may attract even more, should you become injured.
Be aware that whatever is causing that distant roaring will arrive in 6-8 turns. Godspeed.
HELIOS’ finger is still raised in the air when the beast leaps out in front of him in an attempt to strike Ryloos. His body springs into action before he has time to think, chasing down the fleeing beast. “This creature is fast and speed creates a great advantage in battle. I will attempt to slow it down to give us the upper hand.”
As HELIOS reaches the beast in the water he unleashes a flurry of punches into it’s odd body.

Ryloos lands, bow in and hand and knocks an arrow to its string. She aims high on the beast's body to avoid Helios delivering his blows and lets the arrow fly. After she fires, she immediately leaps to another position to take aim and pepper the beast from multiple angles.
Sergeant Lofty peers through the mist at his squad. They looked to be fighting nothing but mist. The creature could only vaguely be seen as an hole in the surface of the water.
"Try to mark it, get some ropes round it or shove something down it's throat if you have to. I don't care how you get it done but we can't fight what we can't see." Struggling to move quickly in the water, Lofty comes up behind the beast and slaps an open palm against it's smooth carapace, leaving behind a bright yellow handprint.
I was gonna be super manly and try to wrestle it, but the dice were acting up so I'm just gonna do some fingerpainting.
I'm not against you marking the beast, Harvey. I think you'd have to succeed on an athletics save to mark it though. Keep in mind that this thing is able to submerse itself in the water, is translucent, and can swim nearly twice as fast as most of you can walk. I'll say the DC would be the thing's armor class (15).

Buoyside narrows his eyes, trying to track the wacky gator. He's at a loss when it comes to any ideas to mark the translucent beast. I must trust my eyes. I must trust the lord to guide my blade.
