How about a few turns of ray of frost, to kill any mold that likes heat, and then resort to torches / fire for whatever is still alive?

Does Rodolfo have Detect Magic in his spell book? It might be worth it to cast it as a ritual, if it will let him notice any magic traps or curses around those crystals.
If he doesn't, or if people think the possible benefits aren't worth waiting 10 minutes, then never mind.
If the party wants Beegred to scout the area a short distance ahead of the party, he will whine and complain, and then eventually do it. You'd also have to suggest what he should look for, as he doesn't know squat about arcane crystals.

With those shards out of the way of the summoning circle, Beegred will try to spend more time looking at the shards (from a safe distance). Do they look like shattered remains from a statue, like fingers or arms? (destroyed earth elementals) Or perhaps they have writing on the surface? (broken arcane seals)
Just to be clear, to investigate these shards you will have to enter the chamber. Does Beegred do this?

He waits long enough for others to suggest something better.
If not, then he should enter first to scout while the rest of the party stays outside.

Does Beegred recognize and know what basilisks are? Depends if they are an Underdark threat that would be covered in his Ranger favored terrain studies.
How is the lighting in the cave, dim or dark? If it is pitch black in certain areas, then Beegred won't be petrified if he is in them. (The gaze effect requires that they can see each other, and in darkness he can't be seen with Darkvision.)

Just realized I didn't answer Quasimodal's first question. A little late now... but yes, Basilisks would be well known creatures to anyone living in or knowledgeable about the Underdark.

Yes well, stop rolling badly by proxy! Do something to appease RNJesus already.

Oh, it's worse than that. You failed the check, then the damage rolled pretty high.
Seriously though, if it was my intent to kill someone, I would pick on someone else. You've already lost one character in this campaign.
That being said, the dice do what the dice will...
Brown Mold is instantly killed by cold. I'll continue with posts on Monday.

The module doesn't say. So let the dice decide.

I’m way happier than I should be that Spike Growth might actually be useful right now. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it do useful stuff.
