Given that my experience in D&D is minimal, I'm going to defer to the others. Are giant beetles always bad? Are we able to tell what kind of beetles they are? Do they have mop tops and Liverpool accents?

I'm fine with fighting if we need to. Could also have Sarith move the lights around and see how the insects react. If they follow it, go back to my earlier suggestion of moving off to the side out of the path, then send the lights down the tunnel and see if they just walk right past us

Sounds good to me.

Beegred Thornpost - Lvl 8 Halfling Ranger - Out of the Abyss by Kerrec Drusk - Lvl 8 Half-Orc Life Cleric - The Long Road: Dragon Heist by Mingofaust (player & current DM) Hunferho Aelorothi - Lvl 5 Half-Elf Bard/Rogue - Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus (by Pokepaladdy) DM - Frontier City of Nunkreet (ended)
There is no combat, but you have successfully 'completed' the encounter. XP = 10 per beetle x 8 beetles, divided by a party of 11. Since you didn't gain the benefit of harvesting body parts, I'll just call it an even 10xp each.
I know, not a lot. But I didn't design the encounter. It was randomly rolled and Giant Fire Beetles are not challenging.
Not during the long rest, but during any extended rest times, Beegred will (quietly) hammer at the short sword he took from Shoor. He wants to remove any distinguishing marks or shapes that identify it as Drow make. (Hammer it into a generic short sword.) Beegred is in no rush (a little bit at a time), and will avoid making too much noise.
I am not going to use influence, but I don't object if the other players continue to use it.

I thought about this. I was just going to let it happen without micro-managing things like this. BUT! I need to create certain situations for bits of the story to unfold. So for now, if you want to do this, you'll have to re-arrange your watch shifts to free some time to dedicate to the task.
Once the story bits happen (or not), I'll gloss over this kind of micro-managing and just let stuff like this happen without the hassle.
Just waiting for Narstin to comment before moving forward.
Hopefully all is fine with Narstin. But in the meantime, this isn't so challenging we can't move on without him.

I'm guessing they'll be non-aggressive. Unless we can use beetle body parts for crafting purposes, maybe we should let it be.
sorry, been busy. I'll go find the thread and get updated

If you all want to let them pass, then group check roll animal handling. Otherwise roll for initiative.
No problem. Glad you're still interested.
Narstin is all for letting them pass if we can:
animal handling: 22
Initiative if it comes to that one way or the other: 13
22 is plenty.

Before I go on in the Official thread, is there anything you guys are doing during your long rest?
Also, is anyone going to be using the influence mechanic I homebrewed to work towards a free feat, or would you rather not bother with it?

I haven't abandoned this idea yet.
