"Not at our expense, you're not," Narstin calls back. "I see you have food, how ya doing for water? You'll be wanting that long before we have to worry if we run out of food. But there's no reason we should have to have a standoff or a fight either one. Why not work together, or else simply go our separate ways in peace?"
Beegred under his breath to Narstin: "You shouldn't threaten to separate them into pieces..." (thinks real hard and scratches his chin) "... ah, never mind what I just said."

The leader responds to Narstin, "Now that we're all settled in for this standoff of ours, we can chit chat, hum? See, I lead these men and women and I choose my people wisely. I don't coddle anyone, everyone of my men brings skills and abilities that allows us as a whole to be self sufficient with plenty of redundancy. Food, water, light, combat, diplomacy, we're set.
But see, we were employed by a wizard that teleported us down here to the underdark to find a thing he valued enough to pay us well and risk his life for. It was supposed to be a simple and quick trip, but the wizard seems to not have been as skilled as he let on to be. He didn't bring us directly to the place he said he would, and in a fight he went and got himself killed. I also lost one of my men in that battle.
So now we're not getting paid the balance upon job completion and I have my man's family to support. See, that's how I work, that's how I retain skilled and loyal men. Seeing as this is the Underdark and pretty much full of scum, we're not all that morally restrained in just taking a bit here and a bit there so we can return to the surface a little bit better off than when we came.
As a concerned leader, I don't want to risk the lives of my men needlessly, so peace sounds nice. But peace has a price, don't you think? Wouldn't you like to contribute to the livelihood of a family that is now in need?"
Narstin laughs out loud. "Boy did you pick the wrong group to try to extort." He shakes his head as he continues. "We have nothing no money or valuables of any kind to pay you with even if we were so inclined. We're simply trying to find our way out of this accursed Underdark the same as you are."
The leader laughs as well, "Is that so? It is a funny thing that everyone always says they have nothing to contribute. Yet from my experience, we always find something. How about this then; you throw your weapons in the corridor where we can see them, and we'll just check your pockets and my man can look for magic items? If we find nothing, I'll personally give you a day's meal for your sorry state and be on our way to find our late wizards treasure before we head back to the surface."

Beegred to Narstin, loud enough to be overheard: "This guy is a pitiful jester, right? He keeps blathering like they have any power over us. I know you said it would be a hassle to kill them all, but they seem too stupid to realize they are given a chance to run away with their lives."

The leader laughs, this time with true mirth. "Aye! Like I said, I choose my people so all our needs get fulfilled." He laughs even more. Once the laughter ends he continues to converse, "We've been hiking and climbing for what feels like a day down here in this place. We're all ready for a good rest. We've probably been doing this for a good couple weeks now, although it is hard to keep track of time. So a couple days to relax and care for our gear while you all decide to see reason is acceptable. For now." The last words had no mirth to them.

Beegred hates that this smug bandit bastard is threatening his party. He moves to N10 (I think that is 25' movement), and is Dodge-ing for his action. (He is trying to draw the enemy fire, but with disadvantage so he doesn't die from the hail of arrows.)
He yells out the words of his former halfling squad leader: "The line must be drawn here. This far, no further! And I will make them pay for what they've done!" (That was right before the leader and the rest of Beegred's halfling squad got crushed by stone giant boulders.)

Note: Derendil currently has Khilseith in his 'custody'. At the beginning Derendil can watch the prisoner or fight, not both. If the fight drags out, his bloodlust may overpower his instructions.
The previously loud leader can be heard muttering, trying to speak to his men without being understood by his foes.
(Beegred roll a Perception).
In response, one of his men moves up the tunnel, darting from cover to cover until he rounds the corner (O11) in front of Beegred, hands empty but ready to strike.
(We're in initiative, but not initiative. No one has acted violently yet. But I'll say Xilyrah waits to see what unfolds, which will make it Beegred and Narstin's turns before the bandit gets to go.)
