Skameros slinks away from the party, heading east by keeping the cavern wall to his right. He keeps moving forward until the others are just barely visible behind. Looking forward, he can barely see what looks like another massive door similar to the ones you came through to get to the Rockblight.
The sounds of battle seem just as faint and still very difficult to discern a direction of origin.
Skameros doesn't see anything else. The sounds of a waterfall maybe got a little louder, but it's hard to tell as it echoes in the cavern.
Rodolfo whispers, "I can't tell where the sounds of battle are coming from. Lets just go and hug left left wall and see where we end up."
Beegred listens to Rodolfo, and then jumps up when Skameros gets back. "You sneaky devil."
(OOC: Skameros doesn't mention the massive door ahead? Sonofa...)
"The party should start moving forward at a careful speed. Hug the left wall, like Rodolfo said. I'll go ahead about a hundred feet to scout ahead, and come back every few minutes to make sure we share what we see."
Once Beegred is outside of dim light, he is invisible to darkvision (but not to blindsense, like the oozes have). He will use his passive senses (Observant feat) and his Ranger knowledge of Underdark terrain to notice what is around, and try to be stealthy: 12

Rejoined, your party starts to move, keeping the pool of water to the left until you reach the northern wall of the cavern. Here you clearly see the cave, descending steeply enough to warrant the stairs you find inside. The faint sounds of battle never cease to be just beyond the darkness.
As Beegred scouts further east, on the northern side of the cavern, he sees a silhouette in the darkness at the edge of his vision. It doesn't emit light, but at the same time, it is not complete darkness which allows Beegred to see it. This silhouette moves at a leisurely pace as if on some kind of business.
As long as the halfling can stay in complete darkness (to be invisible to those with darkvision), Beegred will try to move within 50' of that figure to better identify what the thing is.
(That is within his darkvision range, but maybe seeing in the equivalent of black & white "dim light" limits what he can make out?)

As Beegred gets within 50 feet of... whatever it is... and staring intently, he's fairly sure he's looking at a ghostly deep gnome. It continues to walk along as if on some kind of business.
Beegred decides the brave thing to do is scamper back to the cleric with a holy symbol, and mention the ghostly deep gnome. (Just stick around long enough to figure out what direction it is headed.)

The ghostly creature walks from spot to spot, leaning over to look at something that Beegred can't see. It seems to make an exchange with someone, then continues walking until it stops at another spot. There it stands for a while, pondering, occasionally reaching out to touch something that is not there. The creature shrugs, turns and heads back from where it came, repeating similar behavior at various spots in this cavern.

Rodolfo History: 12
Ghosts are usually trapped in the material and/or ethereal planes due to suffering traumatic deaths. They are usually trapped in the moment in time around their deaths. They can be friendly, or hostile. There's no way to know until one approaches them.
Unless someone objects, Beegred will urge the group towards the last location of the ghost.
Beegred: "Let's approach this ghost. If it is hostile, we can back off, but if it can talk, maybe it knows more about this area and the medusa and the feral elementals.
"Besides, we can't let this ghost think it can frighten us." (He says this while staying a half-step behind Narstin.)

Narstin shrugs, then chuckles as Beegred moves to hide behind him. Then he squares his shoulders and heads towards where the ghost was spotted. "Hello, my name is Narstin," he says to the ghost if it's visible when they get there. Or to the open air if it's not visible and they don't see any sign of where it went.

Agreeing with Beegred, the party moves together towards the center of the cavern searching for the ghost. No one is sure who found who first, but suddenly the inwardly lit form of the ghost appears in front of the party, and seems to become more opaque, more rooted in this cavern. Where there was a silhouette before, now everyone can see a gnome, well dressed carrying a basket with some foods and unknown items, its face contorted with dread and pain as it clutches the fabric of its clothing just below the collar.
Beegred and Narstin both immediately notice a shimmering mirage like aura around the silhouette of the ghost, as well as an increase in the volume of the sounds of combat that has been so elusive until now. Through the mirage like aura, the two can see fleeting glimpses of chaos, as shapes seem to dart to and fro, some chasing, others being chased.
For someone so big, you're surprised by how quietly he disappeared.

Especially with Beegred's Observant feat, he is not pleased that Skameros was long gone before Beegred noticed.
(EDIT: Role-playing being displeased. The player is not grumpy at all.)

The party can decide if this is something to investigate, or to stay clear of the areas being visited.

Would Rodolfo know anything about ghostly gnomes?
Maybe Rodolfo will know something about ghosts in general if he rolls OK.
But there's nothing specific about this ghost being a gnome that would warrant giving you the info or having you roll for it.
