This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The last surviving goblin drops its short bow, draws its scimitar, and moves alongside the hobgoblin (from C5 to A7) to swing at Epos: 6.
The scimitar slices into the elf, causing 4 points of damage.
Except that it isn't the last surviving goblin: arrows fire from the bushes (at A10 and B4).
OOC: Skulgryn, I know you said you looked around as you moved towards the hobgoblin, during which you passed one of the hidden goblins. However, since you used your action to attack that turn, I didn't allow you to roll a new Perception check (which would have used up an action). Instead, I just relied on your passive Perception score; these are the two goblins who, based on DM secret rolls, beat everyone's passive Perception earlier.
The goblin A10 fires at Epos with advantage: 16. Epos takes 3 points of damage.
The goblin at B4 fires at Khial with advantage: 20. Khial takes 5 points of damage.
Struck from the front and the back, Epos stays on his feet. Meanwhile, an arrow tears into Khials's shoulder.
The goblins then make Stealth checks as a bonus action to hide: 20, 6.
OOC: I don't know why I got that message again - - probably because I edited the post to reflect the die results. Some of my editing might have touched the algorithm. I'll just stick to putting the die results in one post, then describe the results in the next one.
Just as he thought the battle was turning in their favour, tragedy strikes.
Epos, the only true melee fighter they had goes down with from the blows of the hobgoblin and a surprise attack from a hidden goblin.
Khial also has taken a hit.
With three goblins shooting arrows and the hereto indestructible hobgoblin still standing, Xel quickly calculates the odds. And they are not in their favor.
The goblins will continue their shoot and hide tactic while the hobgoblin can engage us at close range and cut us down like wheat at harvest time. I am barely holding on and one errant arrow or scimitar blow will surely take me down.
But there is always a way out. There is always a chance to turn the tide of battle. He may have a spell that may just be the answer.
With his staff in one hand, his other hand quickly goes through a series of movements ending with his open hand closing into a fist. Xel incants: "Drift off to the land of unreal wonder. let go of your worries and now only slumber."
Xel casts [Sleep] .
He will cast it in order to catch the three goblins (A7, A10, and B4) and hobgoblin (B7) in its area of effect. I think centering it on the B7 will catch all of them in the range of the spell (all creatures within 20 feet from a point I choose).
OOC:Desarud, I rerolled the goblin attacks because of that 'editing my post' glitch. Epos is still up, aling with Khian, though both are wounded.
Xel's sleep magic catches Epos as well as the goblinoids, but being an elf he easily resists the call of the spell. The hobgoblin and the goblins near it are not as strong-willed, and slump to the ground, snoring.
The battle is over. Tell me what you want to do with the sleeping goblins -- kill them, make them prisoners, eat them, etc.
The goblin that hit Khian (from B4) is nowhere in sight. The party lost track of it after its attack (courtesy of a successful Stealth check).
OOC: How does short rest work on the character sheet?
Epos talks to the group: "That hurt. Perhaps we should rest a bit before we move on."
To the Xel he says: "My thanks. Your intervention was timely."
He begins to disarm the slumbering goblins-folk, remove their armor and restrain them with whatever materials are at hand. He intents to bury the arms and armor to dissuade pursuit, after which he intends to bury the fallen enemy.
Xel tells Epos: "Things fell into place. But right now is not the time for pleasantries since there may be more on the way. Let us relieve our would be killers of any valuables they may have and dispose of them. I believe Khial is the type of person who may not be adverse in making sure they do not follow us nor seek revenge at a later time. We should however talk to the hobgoblin and see what he knows before killing him."
The world is a harsh place and Xel very much doubts that the path before them will be made any easier with enemies behind them.
Xel would like to loot the bodies and the prisoners of anything valuable. If their equipment is salvageable, as Epos suggested, bury them and mark the spot. Maybe we can come back at a later time to retrieve them and sell them for whatever they may fetch.
Xel would also like to summon his familiar, Nihm, an owl (celestial). He has Nihm fly up to see from the air if there are any more Goblins in the nearby vicinity.
Once the hobgoblin is securely bound and gagged, Xel asks HDP if he is familiar with the healing arts and help with everyone's wounds.
If the party can take a short rest, Xel , after getting any healing or aid from HDP maybe will get a one HD worth of HP back depending how har he is from maximum HP. He would also want to recover one 1st level spell slot using arcane recovery.
OOC: So you plan to kill the sleeping goblins, then interrogate the hobgoblin? Is that the plan?
OOC: A short rest will take up to an hour. At the end of it, the injured party members can roll a hit dice to regain lost hit points or abilities that recharge after a short rest. You have my permission to press the short rest button, but you must publicly roll for hit points.
As the party rests after the gruelling battle, the uninjured Herr Doktor Professor paces impatiently.
"Vhy rest for such minor injuries? You are brave and hearty adventurers, are you not? You should follow me now to the location of the cache! That the hobgoblins sent this patrol after me is proof that the treasure is there!"
As he rants, the captured hobgoblin looks at the party in grim defiance; he can see the bodies of his comrades whose throats you slit. He knows the fate that awaits him and is determined to resist to the last.
When the party's short rest is over, as you engage in the other activities you mentioned (burying goblins, summoning a familiar), the Herr Doktor Professor's impatience spills over.
"You might as well give up the treasure to the goblinoids if you plan to waste any more time," he shouts.
OOC: what exactly does the party plan to do? Tell me all the activities you actually want to engage in, and I will tell you how much time is spent.
OIC: whose rope was used to tie the hobgoblin? If you plan to leave the hobgoblin behind, you'll also have to leave the rope. I've also noted that some of you are short on rations. Remember that HDP plans to lead you into the forest (beyond the western part of the map) from which the goblins emerged (and none of you have the survival skill).
Xel says "Lead on. Herr Doktor Professor. What you say rings true. Time is not on our side."
Since the Hobgoblin is defiant, Xel asks if there is anyone who objects if he shall be put down. It is very unlikely that he'll talk and even if he does, Xel would not want to release him. Too many loose ends which may be cause for regret later on. He'll let anyone who thinks he can get any useful information from their captive have a crack at him. He will waive to interrogate given that he feels he does not pose any threat to the hobgoblin, especially given that he is resiisting
When Xel checked the belongings of the goblin and hobgoblin, did he find anything relating to either the treasure or the Cult of the Dragon or the identity of their employer or tribe.
Investigation Check: 18
Xel regains 1 HD + Con Modifier of Hit Points from the short rest: 7
OOC: Did we get any treasure?
OOC: I have 10 days of rations. Is it possible to pick berries and nuts as we travel without slowing us down?
OOC: Without proficiency in the survival skill, I will rule that looking for nuts and berries will add several hours to your travel time.
OOC: Each member of the party receives 125 xp for this encounter; please mark this on your character sheets. You can recover the goblinoids' weapons: 6 scimitars. 6 short bows, 2 longswords, 2 longbows, 80 arrows, and 2 suits of chainmail armor. These are all serviceable items, though clearly used. If you bring them to a town, you may be able to get up to half of their price as listed in the PHB, though I will monitor their effect on your encumbrance -- especially if you have a low Strength score.
OOC: Can we see if we can bury/hide them and come back for them later? I don't think we have any pack animals with us and we are not the very strong type. In any case, Xel cannot use any of the equipment.
OOC: stripping the bodies will take about an hour, burying them another hour. The Herr Doktor Professor says it will take around 4 hours to get to the location of the cache. Also, who will murder the hobgoblin in cold blood?
OOC: Hmmm. Epos doesn’t strip professionally. He wouldn’t do the whole tease thing which would take longer. So he would stripped pretty quickly. Anyways Epos decides he will just carry the arms and leave their armor on. Then toss them along the way.
Despite not having equipped his shield, the hobgoblin proves to be an able defender: he uses the stave of his bow to block the elf's blows.
The Herr Doktor Professor shouts out:
"Hobgoblin, hobgoblin, can't hit anything!
Time to go home and get more training!"
Hobgoblin' Wisdom save: 11.
The hobgoblin cringes in pain from the bard's words; it takes 4 points of damage and has disadvantage on its next attack.

The goblins then make Stealth checks as a bonus action to hide: 20, 6.

OOC: I get it. Sometimes when I edit a post, the dice results change. (But that didn't happen before, why is it happening now?)
Anyway, this is the attack roll with advantage against Epos: 11.
This is the attack roll with advantage against Khial: 19.
One goblin's devious attack on Epos fails, but the other scores a hit on Khial. Khial takes 3 points of damage.
The goblins then make Stealth checks to hide: 16, 15.
Xel, your turn is up!

OOC: As per Sleep, I may be able to put some of the goblins asleep. I don't think I rolled high enough for the hobgoblin.
I will then move to M9.
OOC:Desarud, I rerolled the goblin attacks because of that 'editing my post' glitch. Epos is still up, aling with Khian, though both are wounded.
