OOC: Is it possible to have my character cut some goblin ears from the goblin corpses (since it was previously mentioned that he fancies eating goblin ears)?
OOC: I can't seem to find the XP slot in my character sheet
OOC: I'll allow you to do that fairly quickly; however, given that you're not proficient in cook's utensils, I'll ask you to make a save every time you eat them or be poisoned (eating fellow predators is generally unhealthy). I edited your character sheet to give you the xp line; also, your leather armor is still unequipped.
OOC: What time of the day is it? We started at the break of dawn and it seemed we bumped into the patrol after we were joined by Epos. Would that mean if we strip and hide the equipment and then travel to the cache it would be a little bit after noon time?
Khial approaches each of the goblin corpses and slices their ears using a dagger. Looking at the 6 pairs of goblin ear, he mutters to himself, "Maybe if I find a cook in the town, I could pay him to roast these goblin ears so don't have to eat them raw." With that, he pockets the goblin ears.
He then draws his dagger, and approaches the helpless hobgoblin being tied up. He suddenly remembers his first cold-blooded kill many years back, when he was recruited by a small guild of assassins and bounty hunters. He decided to share his story to his companions, while staring at the dagger that would soon be thrust in the heart of the hobgoblin. "As part of my initiation", the thief tells his fellow companions, "the guild had a victim tied up in order to be tortured into revealing information. When they finished torturing the man, they tasked me into ending the poor man's life, so he wouldn't be able to alert his allies into finding our location." The thief looks up into the sky, somehow regretting what he did in his past life before meeting his current companions. "After a while, I grew weary of that guild, and I wanted to leave it. But one does not simply leave a guild of assassins and bounty hunters. So the only way I managed to free myself.....was to kill the leader of the guild." He looks blankly into the hobgoblin's eyes, "And I slit his throat while he slept one night. And stole his shortbow and dagger." He then nears the hobgoblin slowly, one step at a time, " The very dagger that will end your life, you filthy hobgoblin.", the thief coldly hisses towards the hobgoblin.
The thief thrusts the dagger straight into the heart of the hobgoblin.
OOC: DM, do I still need to roll to attack in order to kill the hobgoblin?
OOC: No, the hobgoblin is automatically killed. However, the Herr Doktor Professor says ...
"For someone trying to start a new life, Khial, you seem to be falling back into familiar patterns."
OOC: Epos recovers the weapons, then does a striptease with them as they immediately weigh him down (I figure you'll have a longbow, shortbow, longsword, and scimitar left after you throw away the rest, given a Strength score of 10).
Everyone please make Survival checks. Also, those who used the short rest period to heal up, where are your rolls?
Xel admires Khial for his efficiency with his special skills. While Xel has read of these things before, seeing it up close should have shaken him, but it didn't. The real world is unlike the worlds he has explored in his books. Real life experience is ... interesting. He is taking in everything with methodological eyes. Soaking everything up for later analysis.
Xel understands that he will need to learn a great many things in order to become stronger. Great power requires patience and perseverance.
Xel feels there is more about Epos than meets the eye. Calm and freegoing yet he can break bone with a well placed blow with his foot and fist. What happens when he loses control.
The party follows the Herr Doktor Professor into the woods; following a well-worn trail, they encounter signs that someone or something has passed here ahead of them.
Once, Xel prevents Khial from stepping into a pile of fallen leaves. The sharp-eyed wizard notices that some of the leaves are green, not brown or yellow. Clearing the pile, they find a crudely-made spike trap -- clearly designed to wound and hobble whoever stepped on it.
Another time, Epos finds a broken short bow, discarded by the side of the trail.
After traveling for around four hours, the party emerges from the trail near a clearing surrounded by five strange-looking trees.
"I was passing north of the grove when one of the trees caught my attention," says the Herr Doktor Professor. "They're weirwood trees -- not native to this part of the Sword Coast. The groundlings or simple volk call them witch wood trees; there are many stories told of people enchanted or cursed just by sleeping beneath them. Before you dismiss such tales as superstition, I also know that enchanters and necromancers favor such trees for creating wands that hold spells from their respective schools.
"I was examining the trees and found the sigil of the Cult of the Dragon carved into them. Before I could investigate further, I heard the voices of goblinoids approaching and fled. Apparently, some of the goblinoids picked up my trail and followed me."
OOC: The party emerges from the SE end of the map; please inform me of what your characters will be doing.
Xel tries to remember if he knows anything about weirwood trees and their significance for any ritual or spell, especially given there are five (5) of them in a circle formation.
OOC: Hi Mike. Do I already roll for checks or do I wait for you to tell me which skill or ability I should be rolling?
OOC: Has it been more than 8 hours since we fought the goblins and hobgoblins? If its more than 8 hours my Mage Armor has expired.
Xel also has Nihm fly up and scan the area from above for any other creatures and let me know if there are.
Xel turns to the group: "Since we know that there are goblins in this area, I would suggest that Khial stealthily reconnoiter the area before we go closer for a better look.
"HDP, do you remember which tree has the symbol of the Cult of the Dragon carved into it?"
OOC: if you're making a skill check, you can roll already as long as you identify the skill you're rolling for. Roll for Arcana for more information on weirwood trees.
OOC: around 6 hours have passed.
The Herr Doktor Professor scratches a crude dragon claw on the ground, with eyes enclosed within a flame above it -- the known symbol of the Cult of the Dragon. He says all the weirwood trees have it.
OOC: when did you summon a familiar? You couldn't do that during the short rest period -- otherwise, I'll add to your travel time to the grove. If you summom one now, tell me what kind of beast is it and what it will do.

OOC: If only six hours has past them my Mage Armor is still active.

OOC: I presumed I already had one summoned at the start. I recalled it from the pocket dimension after the fight with the goblins. It's listed on my character sheet.
Xel patiently waits to see if the coast is clear before approaching the clearing with the weirwoods to further investigate the markings.

The thief equips his dagger, just in case his stealth gets compromised. He slowly creeps his way in between the trees, no sound coming from each step he makes. He stops and blends into the shadows cast by the trees (M13), to listen to any unusual sounds nearby.

Epos watches the thief disappear into the surrounding forest. He recalls with unease the cruel banality with which Khial dispatched the hobgoblin. "This is the way of the world," he thinks. "These are the lessons people learn from the harshness of the world.... Master Ekbanta's observations on how callousness perpetuates itself to a certain degree, appears to be evidenced by the actions and demeanor of my new companion," the monk reflected.
OOC: Having lived in a temple surrounded by forest, will a Nature check help Epos discern what might be in store, intuit possible danger, or glean some useful information? If yes: NATURE: 1
OOC: The monk also remains alert to the surrounding area, watching out for danger... PERCEPTION: 6
