"Hello friend, I'm helping these esteemed visitors find this plot of land they have a deed for, would you direct us to whom we should ask for further details? I've never had the pleasure of digging through old records/maps to find a location like this and am almost interested in how to do it." Misalyk puts on his best we're-in-it-together-these-out-of-towners-are-odd-please-help-me-help-them face.
The servant withdraws into the house. Moments later, you hear the pumping of heavy footsteps on wooden stairs, and the Baron comes out of the gloom within the house.
Greetings, greetings! His dogs are nowhere to be seen. He is all smiles. Barnaby, yes? You have done Vallaki a great service. A great service. And me! Me personally. That was a fine show, at the festival. Poof! Fire in the rain! I never would have thought. But I knew I could trust you, from when we met yesterday morning. A man of action! A little man. Of action. Yes, yes. I knew it.
Barnaby extends the deed, and asks about it. Yes, yes, this is the mill outside of town. I think. It is the only mill I know of in all of Barovia, so surely it is the same. He rubs his chin. Yes, yes, I think this is the one. Strange, that you have the deed, but these are strange days. Where is it from? And what can I do for you?
Barnaby tilts his head forwards allowing the brim of his hat to hide his face as he blushes from the praise. Thank youBaron. It was my pleasure to help out. Clearly you work hard to make life good for the people of this town, it was truly the least I could do.
As to the origin of the deed, we came across it in a house that was abandoned by the living, but infested with spirits and fiends. Apparently some sort of cultist had operated out of the house, but we found his remains(I think)in his basement chapel.I hope I got some of that right. It wasn't as long ago for Barnaby as it was for me.We came across this deed and figured it shouldn't be left to rot away with the house. Perhaps it is best left in your hands to do with as you see fit. Meanwhile, we have been led to believe (if asked where we learned this, Barnaby will claim an anonymous note) that there is a coven of witches that has taken up residence in the mill. We are trying to learn what we can about the mill and the witches, with the hopes of being able to go there to rout them; all in an effort to better your barony of course. Can you tell us anything about either, or direct us to someone who may be able to?
And lastly, I am in need of a pearl worth about 100 gp in order to cast one of my spells. Is there any chance you would have one lying about that I could purchase from you?
Question to the group...If the baron has a pearl (or anyone else we find) how do you guys feel about spending the bulk of our current party funds in order for me to be able to cast the identify spell? I am okay if you think we should wait until we have more gold, but I think it would be useful. Currently we have a druid staff that is marked in our party loot as "magic", but we don't know what it is. I'm not sure why we marked it as magic. It might not be. Regardless it is the type of thing that, I think, the identify spell will tell us more about.
Witches! In the mill!? Harumph harumph harumph. It is a dangerous place outside these walls, and I do not know all of the dangers you may encounter. But witches? At the mill? I had not heard that.
I will not discourage you from investigating, of course. You will be welcome back, when you return. As for riches, perhaps you will find some there? But I do not have a treasure like the one you describe.
Go ahead & roll an insight check. If you get a 15 or higher, read this:
He may be holding something back about his familiarity with the mill. You don't get the feeling he's being sinister, but there is something he isn't saying.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Chubs: So, Mr. Baron Sir, perhaps you didn't hear all of Barnaby the Bold's, Chubs raises a hand with a flourish that he imagines to be magicish in nature, question. Do you know anything of the mill that may help us in our endeavours? Perhaps there is a secret basement? Perhaps a back door in? Perhaps you know of the poor miller who was disemboweled there years ago and his spirit now haunts the place? Or...perhaps you know nothing. I just wanted to make sure you heard the question. Chubs raises a particularly fuzzy eyebrow in expectation.
Know about the mill from personal experience? No, no, young man. I've never seen it myself, and I don't know what's inside. We in Vallaki protect ourselves and each other by staying within the walls! He's visibly unsure of what to make of some of what Chubs had to say.
Worried that disturbing the Baron prior to leaving on their mission would bring an unwelcome level of official attention, Misalyk speaks up "As we saw at the Festival these gentlemen have a flair towards the theatrical, I think. Witches at a mill would make for a fine theatre play. One where the heroes, sent by the Baron, investigate an abandoned property and drive out the scary beings infesting it and then set about revitalizing it so that town can enjoy the extra industry provided by their leadership. Witches, ghosts, undead... it matters not the foe as long as in the end it is a joyful ending that shows people they have hope." Turning to the others, he says "If there is only one mill it shouldn't be hard to find, we can go quickly and check out this place and report back to the good Baron when we're done. Hopefully with good news that there is no additional threats or concerns to worry about." He makes towards the exit.
Chubs rolls his eyes and shrugs his prodigious shoulders, Yeah, what he said, and follows after Misalyk.
Barnaby's eyebrows furrow as he stares after them silently for a moment. Yes, good day Baron. We will report back to you when we are able, and he too follows.
Regarding the gold thing I don't have any objections to you spending group funds (especially as I wasn't there to earn it and don't have a say). I have 10g if you are short and need a tiny bit extra.

Thanks. Speaking of which...Barnaby did not get a response to whether he could purchase a 100 gp pearl from the Baron.
The baron said that he did not have a treasure of the type you sought. I will wind the clock to the following morning and leaving Vallaki tomorrow.
You will have a successful long rest. Choose your spells, if any of you do that kind of thing. Lucento, if you pass along this news, signals his intent to stay at the temple, for the time being.

You can roll a Persuasion check, with advantage, for reasons that may or may not become clear.
15 Persuasion.
BTW: definitely consensus on windmill, I'll try to be better with attendance
Excellent!

Spend that gold if necessary
