Gonna have a little role playing based on what Kif has experienced and maybe bend time a touch
As we welcome Fope through the doors...
Welcome back, son. Glad to see you've healed up. Hope the visanti weren't too much of a problem...enigmatic motherf*ckers to be sure. We're here to help our new friend bury their father in the morning and then we're going to escort them to a safe have. Are you up for that?
Oh, and next time you want to cut and run use this, it will be quicker
Hey Dov, glad you're back, hope your exams and such went well, Just to explain from a roleplaying point of view. As far as Kif has seen of him, he showed up at a banquet and saw this guy standing on a chair challenging our hosts and everything else without much provocation, but we decided to move on, we encountered a bear and Kif moved up to stand side by side with Fope the great fighter and as soon as I did that Fope moved back leaving leaving Kif out front and alone (which Kif can deal with, but help is welcome) Then we get to camp and he ditches his stuff and darts off into the woods. Only to turn up beaten to within an inch of his life and looking for help, all within the space of a few days. This is going to leave the old soldier wary of our companion
Barnaby will chuckle to himself at Kif’s little joke. He thinks, “Well I hope this Fope has learned something from his brush with death. If he keeps running off it won’t do us any good.”
Given the chance Barnaby will ask the priest, “So uh, what exactly is going on with your son there? I’ve never seen anything like it. Must be terrifying for you.”
By the way, Barnaby and Puddin, anyone else remember this line from Madam Eva's reading:
" This card sheds light on one who will help you greatly in the battle against darkness. The Executioner. A lean man stands on the gallows, looking up at the noose. Seek out the brother of the devil's bride. They call him "the lesser," but he has a powerful soul."
Seems like Ismark the lesser might fit that bill, which would make his sister the devil's bride
You know, Barnaby, I'm really surprised that Puddin hasn't blown up at the Padre and his questionable parenting tactics. Do you think we should look into this tortured soul in the basement in the morning before or after we bury the old man? Oh, and yeah, moving the sister over one town might not be enough, but that old house they were hiding in seemed pretty beat and probably wouldn't last too much longer, it might just buy us some time
Time has turned elastic, where are we exactly? I'm assuming these discussions have happened before we bed down, then the first watch went by without incident and now we are in the middle of the second watch where Barnaby has seen some shit, is that correct?
I owe a significant update to Barnaby from Father Donavich. I’ll get to it tomorrow. We’re going to bend time a bit and still be at the beginning of first watch.
Father Donavich, having shown Barnaby to the office, now kneels at the altar and returns to quiet prayer. Fope arrives. After Barnaby finds and pockets the scroll, and has finished searching the office, he returns to the chapel and waits for an opportunity to speak with Donavich.
It is during this period that Kif begins speaking with Fope. Puddin, of course, may speak up when she chooses. After 45 minutes in prayer on his knees, Donavich stands to stretch and make some adjustments to his clerical paraphernalia. Barnaby asks him about his son's illness:
Over a year ago, a wizard in black robes led some villagers against Count Strahd. Many perished, including, it is said, the wizard himself. My son Doru was among the villagers, and he returned to me as he is now. I managed to lock him in the basement, and I intend to keep him there until the Morninglord heals him, and makes him a man again.
You are reminded of the conversation with the Visanti at the encampment, at which one of them told you a story about a wizard battling Strahd.
Again, we are just at the beginning of the first watch. Have your conversations & whatnot, and then we will go forward into the watch rotation. No need for new rolls for perception or con saves. Though we are still waiting for a con save, with advantage, from Fope.
“Again, that must be very hard on you. My heart goes out to you, and if we learn anything about what may have happened to your boy while on our adventures, we will be sure to let you know. I have children of my own and I don’t know if I could handle such a situation with the grace that you do.”
”I would say that perhaps Puddin could try a spell of lesser restoration, but I have seen the divine magic in you as well, so I assume you have already tried that path.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Fope, exhausted from his journey and his search in Barovia, accepts the dull knife and goes to sleep on a broken bench. He may or may not think about this the next day.
Barnaby figures that the old priest would be happy to see this scroll used in the fight against the evils of this land and tucks it onto his bag.
Second watch perception13
Con: 16
Barnaby, late at night - you would estimate at roughly midnight - you see a curious green glow coming through the narrow windows in the back of the chapel. Upon closer examination, an eerie green light suffuses the graveyard. From this light emerges a ghostly procession. Wavering images of doughty women toting greatswords, woodwise men with slender bows, dwarves with glittering axes, and archaically dressed mages with beards and strange, pointed hats—all these and more march forth from the graveyard, their numbers growing by the second.
Blue: Do they appear to be coming towards the church? Either way I will look for Father Guido Sarducci and ask if this is typical. Well if they look like they’re headed right for the church I’ll rouse everyone.
They rise and rise and rise. Warriors, wizards, rangers, and rogues. All manner of adventurers, rising from the earth and making their way toward Ravenloft.
They are not the dead of this graveyard. His breath and body odor are both foul, but he seems lucid enough as he whispers into your ear. They are travelers, like yourselves. Adventurers from beyond Barovia, here to battle Strahd. They've all fallen, over the years. And every night they rise up to do battle again. I do not imagine that, in death, they have much effect on him or his keep. You might be able to go touch them, though after sunset I do not lightly open the doors. Certainly not to engage the dead in conversation.
As you watch, the spirits do, in fact, make their way up the rise behind the church, into the trees and toward Strahd's castle.
Ismark awakens as the second watch is coming to a close. He offers to take the third watch and, assuming the offer is acceptable, the rest of the night passes without incident.
It is the eighth day since you left Daggerford, and so much has changed! You awaken at dawn in a strange land, surrounded by strange people, a daunting foe, and new terrors around every corner.
It is almost time to lay a man to rest, though you never knew him in life, and you contemplate what you have learned in these past days. You know you are stronger, as you rise from your slumber, and you take comfort knowing that at least you are slightly better prepared this day then you were on the day before. Because you're Level 3! Get those character sheets done, and we'll move forward. I don't actually *need* everyone's sheet to move forward, but I'd like them as soon as possible, please.
Test went well. Thanks for asking. I'm still waiting for official results.
Føpé fails to cut his breakfast cheese with his new dull knife, Kiff, may I borrow your sharpening stone? Bludgeoning and running just doesn't have the same ring to it.

perfect, I'm going to pocket that...Did Fope show up during first watch or before?
Just before watches began. At dusk. You can talk to him if you want.
Edit: though it’s a holiday weekend so be patient.
no worries.

“Ah, very astute Kif. With that in mind, I worry that bringing her One town over will not be sufficient to make her safe from that demon’s clutches.”
Inspiration for Kif!
sweet

Only the Morninglord can heal him now.

During Barnaby's watch, something happens:
What do you do?
Blue: Do they appear to be coming towards the church? Either way I will look for Father Guido Sarducci and ask if this is typical. Well if they look like they’re headed right for the church I’ll rouse everyone.
Every night at midnight. Watch.
As you watch, the spirits do, in fact, make their way up the rise behind the church, into the trees and toward Strahd's castle.
“Well that certainly gives a man the heebie jeebies.”
Barnaby will relate all of this to the party in the morning.
Ismark awakens as the second watch is coming to a close. He offers to take the third watch and, assuming the offer is acceptable, the rest of the night passes without incident.
