Gentario lifts his eyebrows in surprise. "Uh," he says, looking the least composed any of them have ever seen the man. "What a peculiar request. I've heard of the Xanathar guild employing bugbears sometimes. I don't know where one would solely acquire the ears, though."
Tituslooks at Jalester Silvermane, and speaks in a low voice "We need to talk, I've come across some sensitive information that I think you'll want to hear. Is it safe to talk here? Believe me when I say that there are people who would kill us both where we stand to learn about this. I don't want to risk anyone eavesdropping on us..."
Titususes his Divine Sense to scan the room for any fiends that may be lurking in the Yawning Portal.
Titus' divine sense determines no threat of fiends in the area. He looks back at Silvermane to see he is staring at Titusintently. He nods, then calls over a burly looking fellow from a neighboring table. He whispers in the man's ear. Within a few minutes, this corner of the tavern is completely cleared of customers. Speaking low, Silvermane says, "Speak your mind. This is as safe as we'll be without magic being involved."
“Well... we found out what was behind the explosion in Trollskull Alley. Gangs, fiends, and Pelor knows else is willing to spill all that blood because of a magical item, the Stone of Golorr. We believe this stone can help locate a massive stolen treasure in the city, half a million gold! We have the stone and last night we fought off fiends who came to steal it right out from under us. We will be able to decipher the location soon, but we are getting in pretty deep with this one now. There are gangs and daemons after this treasure, and its guarded by a golden dragon, right here in Waterdeep! I come here seeking help and guidance from the Lord’s Alliance to make sure this gold doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.”
Morph nods, slumping slightly with disappointment.
"So, the other question we have is...well we found out where the treasure is located and are in the process of getting needed supplies for an attempt to recover it."
"We were hoping The Blackstaff would be back, because we want to know what we should do, if we succeed in recovering it."
"The treasure was embezzled from the city, so, who do we return it to, if we succeed? or should we give the details to you and let someone else attempt the recovery?"
"Or do you have others we should work with, to try a recovery?"
"We want to do the right thing, and we are not even totally sure we will succeed. We found out there is a dragon defending the treasure..."
"Ah," Silvermane says knowingly. "You believe it to be real, then? Neverember's hoard? Do you know how he amassed this fortune?" Silvermane says this in a way that suggests he already knows the answer himself.
Morph, Rethan, and Laniel:
Grentario continues to look surprised. "It is real then? Dagult's Theft? I had always thought he had spent it or took it with him. Well, returning it to the city is no trouble. The Gray Hands or the Lord's Alliance, or even the Harpers could help do that. As for recovering the treasure, I personally recommend you lot for the task. You have done a fine job of it so far. You understand the stakes better than anyone. That said, if you care for backup, Lady Blackstaff might be persuaded to join you. There could not be any dragon, though. They are magically excluded from the city, above and below."
Grentario looks as if he is about to respond but then Morphmentions the Dragonstaff. "Ah," he says at last. "That item would allow a dragon within the limits of Waterdeep. I've not heard of Aurinax but if he is a gold dragon, then he is likely good-hearted at least, as most such are. I've not heard of the Dragonstaff of Ahgairon for some time. It does make sense that Dagult Neverember would have possessed it at one time, though. Truly, the bits and pieces of your assertions hold up under light scrutiny."
Still seeing the confusing on Morph'sface, he returns to his original interjection. "Oh, yes, the dragon in the bay. The protection spell does not extend that far. It is strictly over the walled areas of the city, both above and below. Undercliff does not even benefit from the protection."
Grentario straightens a wrinkle in his otherwise perfect uniform. "In any case," he says. "Lady Blackstaff will return to the city soon. She might well accompany you to confront Aurinax, if you are patient enough to wait for her."
Grentario shakes his head. "You may let us know when you are going in. If Lady Blackstaff has returned by then, she may have some thoughts about going along. As for the task of getting the coin out, we'll just have to rely on some magic for that, I imagine." There is a little twinkle in his eye as he says this. "You don't worry about logistics. That is my area. You just solve the problem in front of you. The Gray Hands will offer their support where it is needed."
“We believe it was embezzled from the great city of Waterdeep some time ago. Awful thing to pilfer off the people like that. And now the treasure is beset upon by all of the most vile scum in the city! That much gold would be very dangerous in the wrong hands...”

Silvermane nods. "Indeed. Putting back into the hands of the city, maybe even the citizens themselves, would be the right course of action. Well, assuming you are on the right track, what do you require of the Lord's Alliance?"
"So are we going to try and hunting for some Xanathar Bugbears then? Do you think I should try and ask Golorr if he knows where we should try hunting?"
"Rethan, do you have any knowledge about the Xanathars territory, except that they work out of the sewer system of course?"
"Going hunting in the sewers could get us lost and could take us ages. If we know the general area where we might find bugbears operating, it might be a little quicker."
Morphlooks down at the bar in contemplation,
"Picking a fight with the Xanathar gang, could get us in some deep trouble. We are going to want to be extra careful, if we can."
"Can we draw the Xanathar gang to us?" Laniel says. "No. They won't necessarily bring bugbears with them. Maybe we can just capture a known Xanathar guild member and question him?"
“Yes of course, I will ensure the money is returned to the city coffers, not leeched away by some lowlife goons. Waterdeep and her people will not be robbed of this wealth. As for help from the alliance... well lets see, we will surely have many adversaries if we seek this treasure.
The gangs I think we can handle, no worries there, just some good old fashion guards work to be done.
The devils and fiends may pose a bigger threat, anything you can provide that would help ward against them or destroy them would give us an edge.
And then there’s... the gold Dragon guarding the treasure. Unless he can be persuaded to share in our civic traditions and return the gold to the city coffers, I don’t know what we shall do! And I’ve never known a Dragon to easily part with treasure... Do you have any advice for us in dealing with them?”
(Do I need to roll something to see if I know where to find xanathar?)
"Another option might be to check the city morgue, see if there's any dead bugbears we could acquire ears from. Or even a cemetery for any recently deceased that might be usable, though that's rather less than ideal..."

"Ahh..."
Morph looks mildly confused,
"What about the dragon that Lady Blackstaff sent us to parley with, the one from the harbour?"
"There must be a way for dragons to enter Waterdeep, we have talked to one."
"Our informant is adamant that a gold dragon guards the treasure for Neverember."
"He says it is doing it, in exchange for some gems and a staff...uh...called..."
Morph tries to remember the name Golorr gave.
"Ah...the Dragonstaff of Ahghairon, I think."
"The dragons name is Aurinax, if that makes any difference."

"Well we still need to find a pair of bugbear ears, according to our source, and we are not having much luck currently."
"If we keep having problems with their acquisition, the Lady Blackstaff may well have returned, by the time we get them."
Morph gives a mildly despondent laugh.
"Anyway...so how do we get the treasure out and to the grey hands, once we have managed to get into the vault?"
"My guess is, its not going to be so easy for just 5 people to carry out. Do you have someway you would like us to move it?"
"Or, should we just confirm its location and how to get into the vault and then talk to you, or Lady Blackstaff at that point?"

Rethan looks to the others. "Well, I guess our next step is to find those ears..."
Morph nods agreement with Rethan,
"Yep, thanks for your help Grentario, we will let you know when we plan to make an attempt at the vault."
Morph turns to the other,
"Well, shell we head back to the manor, see what the others find and make plans for our hunt?"
