3/3 Update: I think we’ve found our 5 players! (Assuming they all stick around and whatnot). If you’re checking out this concept, and it sounds interesting let me know. If I start up another concept or idea I’ll let you know.
What I’m Looking For: 3 to 5 players, who are able to post once a day (M - F), in a casual but fun (*I cannot promise it'll be fun, I can only try) 5E D&D Game.
Setting: Homebrew. 1750 - 1820s America / Europe if armor, swords, (etc) never went out of style. Low magic (because the most common religion is stamping it out / outlawed it). Guns are thing, if you’re a rich noble who could afford it.
Theme: Group of friends decide to form a street gang in a effort to strike it rich in the port city of Dunnour
DM Style: Improv! I try to leave a lot of “blank spaces” for us to craft and fill in together. I want you to have some ability to help shape the world and what’s going on around you.
Character Creation: Point Buy, Level 1, some restrictions on race (please ask if outside PHB & VOLO) ). Some backgrounds you may have to explain (why is a hermit living in this town and becoming a street gang person with their friends?) Characters have to be from here, and start knowing each other. Everyone will start with 1 contact in the city as well. (Someone from a guild? Rival gang? Mailman? Feel free to be broad as we can all narrow things down later.) Keeping things to official content (Sorry Crit Roll & UA fans)
Length of Game: This one heist and if folks are like “that was cool,” we can continue.
Initiative: Going to be using Side Initiative. Not necessarily my favorite, but, it’ll make the game run smoother. I’ll use a tally of all your static initiative scores. If greater than opponents, congrats you all go first.
Content Sharing: Unfortunately, I won’t be sharing. So you will have to have your own books.
Little bit about the world and location I’m asking you all to join:
History:
As far as anyone knows, the world is somewhere between 300 and 500 years old. Nobody is quite sure what happened before that, but whatever did occur, it was massive. In the sky are the remnants of the old material plane. Spread across the stars like a galaxy. Sometimes flaring up in colors. According to the Faith, the biggest and prominent religion, you all came from there.
The Faith is the dominant religion of the Kingdoms. Also known as The Iron Throne, it’s Champion - The Queen - lead to the foundation of the 5 Kingdoms. They have a low tolerance for magic, or apostates of any kind. Known to stamp out those that show magical abilities, or follow false gods / cults. The Faith’s Domains are Forge, Order, Knowledge, & War.
The 5 Kingdoms:There are 5 main kingdoms that share a common religion, and have more recently been connected by the Rail (Train). Some people currently call it “The Four” due to a bloody war that caused Salair to change leadership….
Salair: The Kingdom where you’re all starting! 3 years ago, a Warring group of Noctis (Homebrew Race. They were somehow born from Humans, Elves, and Orcs and nobody knows why. Now after a few generations, some are breeding with each other and beginning to build their own culture) overthrew Salair after a intense 7 year war. While the old nobility was sure that the Faith would intervene and assist, they did not. For the past 2 years since establishing their own rule, the Noctis have been executing the old nobility (“The Red Streets”). The Governor of Dunnour, however, has not been impacted by this…
Dunnour: The City of the Sea. The City of Wealth. One of the largest ports in the 5 Kingdoms, and happened to be left mostly untouched from the War. It’s a city of great wealth, and absolute poverty. This is where we will begin our story. (Human, Noctis - which is not playable as I’m still tinkering way too much, Half Elves & Orcs make up the dominant races.
I’m prone to having things make sense to me in my head and on paper, so please feel free to ask questions, post character concepts (we can create a character after inviting to campaign), etc.
Launch Date: Next Week, or Two. Depending on group preferences and getting everything set up.
I now realize that, maybe posting this on a Friday afternoon might not be the smartest. So to all those looking, feel free to post questions / DM me directly. But. Well. ha.
I’m interested, particularly because I’m rereading the Gentleman Bastards’ series.
Questions though:
1. What are the base beliefs of this dominant, Magic hating religion and do they view divine magic as different from other forms?
2. Are there any pockets of cults in your world practicing in unseen places, or have they all been eliminated?
3. Would you say that you’re aiming to have a party of rogues and fighters since the aim is to complete a heist, or is there wiggle room for clerics, paladins, etc etc?
I am interested in joining. I never played PbP before. What is the race restriction and also class? Since this is a low magic setting.
Thank you.

4. How do you feel about Variant Humans?
1) Great question. They view Magic as evil, but for some reason give a pass on official clerics (/paladins, etc) of their own faith. Others are either witches, heretics, or apostates.
2) Plenty of room for cults. Some are in plain sight. The Faith doesn’t have eyes and ears everywhere.
3) Not opposed to it being wizards, warlocks, paladins, etc. Part of the fun of us creating all this together.
I am interested in joining. I never played PbP before. What is the race restriction and also class? Since this is a low magic setting.
Thank you.
PbP tends to move a lot slower than normal play. It’s a fantastic and annoying part of it. Race restrictions... hmm.... Warforged. Something else from Eberron (the dual minded dream creature.). Dragonmarked. Some of the variant elves (sorry, there’s so many I don’t remember all their names.). Veldekin (blue people of Ravnica) & Simic Hybrids. Really I’m open to plenty as long as it isn’t too campaign / world specific.
Class restrictions: no bloodhunter, or UA classes (sorry artificer, or gunslingers). Warlocks and wizards are totally around in a low magic setting. They’re just viewed with suspicion and ‘outlawed.’ So tossing a magic missile in the town square will draw some unwanted head.
Below is the link to my character. Please suggest change as you see fit.
I am going to be the "Face" of the group. I have a Criminal Contact, it's a female that happens to work in the Queen's court, or whatever equivalent is available in town. He's aware of the consequences of using magic, so he tries to be discrete. Please let me know if this works, and I can further work on the background.

Na, all good. I'll roll with the Cleric. If you've got the appearance of the gang in the view of folks, I'll have the appearance of the gang in the view of the law.
Raised up as an acolyte of the dominant faith, an encounter with another deity of Order (Ilmater as a stand in if DM wants to homebrew something to fit the world better) who is opposed to the abuse of law that the faith wields. Officially, he came to Dunnour on a mission of outreach, but instead practices and sows seeds of his own deity. He maintains contact with someone who was a fellow acolyte growing up, but is now in a position of authority at one of the Faith's primary temples. This person is aware of Emund’s beliefs, but friendship has so far prevented him from revealing it and this person prefers to try and convert Edmund back
@chrsevs. I like your perspective about our roles in the game, hopefully we will make this work out. Again, sorry for taking your roll. I also would like to thank you. For your background gave me the inspiration to create mine. I am new at these things. Actually, I literally found out about PbP yesterday and replied to this post.
Even if this post doesn’t go anywhere, I would like to thank Geist06 for the opportunity to create a character and come up with a background so quickly. Man, I whish I had known about PbP much earlier and that rolling a char in DnD Beyond is soooo much easier. I am already getting my DnD fix here!!!
Here is my background. Everything is @ the DM’s discretion.
Yorvalor was born and grew up in the City of the Sea (up to DM how much he knows of the town). He is known as the “Faceman” for his pretty face and the smile that occasionally melts the opposite sex’s heart. He may seem reckless to his peers, but that’s because his motto is that “one cannot win if one does not play the game”. He is, however, very loyal to his friends. He has a female contact in the Faith’s local chapter that has a crush on him, but her feelings are not reciprocated for he never revealed her his true feelings. Yorvalor has some inner demons that he keeps at bay by being the reckless person that he is. HeHe promised to himself that one day he will be freed of it and that he will take his true love to a better place and marry her (this last part is optional).
Cheers guys

This is the backstory I am working with so far. DM can decide the tavern's name. If you guys want to suggest/recommend anything I'll take it into consideration.
Cade came from a family of soldiers. Everyone in his family was a member of the army. He wanted to follow his father's footsteps. So, when Cade came of age he joined the army with his older brother. Cade watched his brother die in a battle against the Noctis. As soon as Cade could get away from the battlefield, he left. He was a deserter, he wandered from town to town waiting for his time to return back to his hometown. His family thinks that he is dead. Cade doesn't want to see his family out of fear that he has disappointed them. He hides out at a tavern owned by his father's friend. The man is Cade's only contact in the area. Cade has come to catch up with old friends and after traveling with meager amounts of money he is hoping that he could score big by joining them on a heist.
So there’s two that have contact via PMs and I’m waiting to see here besides the 3 posted from here. So I think we have our five. I’ll be asking some starter questions soon (probably tomorrow) to get a little bit of a better sense of what folks want to do and world build as well.
Some things I’ll probably be asking:
How do you know each other
Little bit of info on your contact / situations / background / etc
Heck I’m curious what kind of heist you’re all most interested in pulling off. (Something Robin Hood ish? Something devious? In between?)
Please feel free to ask any questions you’ve got as well.
Just learned about PbP a few days ago, excited to get my DnD fix finally!
So we have a Bard, Cleric, and Rogue so far? Thinking of going with a Ranger with an Urban vibe to him. I'll work on the character and post the link soon.
Keegan was born and raised in the City of the Sea. Growing up he learned that he had a knack for finding people that didn't want to be found. Putting his skills to good use he got a job with the Faith hunting down apostates and followers of the false gods. Keegan doesn't really share the ideals of the Faith, but a jobs a job and hopes and dreams won't pay for food. He's hoping that joining his friends on this heist will finally allow him to leave this life. He has a contact within the Faith that gives him his next Bounty, Keegan hates his job, but is extremely attracted to his contact and flirts with her relentlessly. (DM's discretion on who the contact is).
Requested customization: Was hoping to have my favored terrain be Urban or City, something like that.
@DM. Perhaps a “bird” unintentionally told Yorvalor that the Faith is sending a very important relic to Dunnour. It is said that such important relic can fetch a good sum in the black market. Something in that line...

Couple that with the fact that losing an important relic would be a blow to the sense of security that the Faith has, and the stranglehold it has on law and presumably import / export, that motivation would fly for Emund too.
Though, thinking about it and how this location is under the control of the Noctis and not the Queen, maybe it’s that they’re trying to move a relic ‘out’ of Dunnour. To bring it to somewhere where they can display and protect it
