"Flemig" Maya would look up the rope at Flemig, feeling the tiredness in her arms, "Could you do 4 of us plus the grate? It would have to be well timed, as we fall with a grate, but it may be our only 'stealthy' option?" She thought aloud.
“Before the four down by the grate jump someone could attempt to dislodge a couple rocks to make it easier to break though. A quick listen in for anyone down below wouldn’t hurt either.” Khlöe lets out a huff trying to position herself in way to alleviate the arm stress being caused by holding onto the rope.
Though well mortared, both jumping and hitting the mortar will start it crumbling, and eventually allow you to pull it up out of the way.
On the ground, you find yourself an irregular shaped cavern, roughly 15x30. The walls are rough hewn and the floor is uneven. Flemig can tell, this is not the more skilled work of Gnomes or Dwarves, and better than that of Goblins and such, so it must be human made. Here and there along the walls, small dish-shaped shelves glow from a phosphorescent lichen. There are a few sconces driven into the walls, but there are no torches. Below the ventilation shaft, is another grate and a shaft. There is one exist (5ft wide) in the east wall.

2 of you will need to leave rope behind. 10ft to tie off, 40 ft shaft, 12 ft to the floor.
Zansnut could feel the burn in his arms. He wasn't sure how long he was going to be able to hold on. When he thought he was going to fall on top of them the other members of the team enacted their plan. He was sure they were going to fall to their deaths, or at least requiring Flemig to use his spell to slow their descent. With the grate out of the way he followed down the rope right behind them. He kept his coil of rope to himself letting the others get rid of theirs. "The more resources I have compared to them will give me a better chance at getting out alive, " the halfling thought.
Aided with the light of his companions (assuming the light spell is still active) he grabbed his crowbar out of his pack and begins to pry at the grate blocking the east wall. "Good job with the first grate I got this one."

Maya would massage her forearms while everyone gathered at bottom of the cavern. Lifting her left hand up in front of her, palm up, she'd cast Produce Flame and hold it in her hand to produce additional light to scan the area. With her free hand, Maya would slide her hood down and press her ear against the cave wall to listen.
Would the light from produce flame show anything else in the room?
Can she hear anything in the next area? Perception 15
Zansnut: The grate second grate is directly below the first (in the flow), and the east exit is just that.
Maya: The room is illuminated with the rope and lichen enough to examine the room of needed. In this cavern, you can hear no other sounds, but you can feel a draft entering the from the east and from below and exiting above.
When he got closer to the east exit he could see there was no grate. "Never mind." He scratched his chin, the beard felt uncomfortable. He put the crowbar away replacing it with the pickaxe he acquired.
ooc - It his intention to go east but he will wait for those with light to follow.

Another grate is mortared to the stone, and a cold draft can be felt.
The bowl-like formations holding the glowing lichen is damp with brackish water
The torch sconces are iron and rusted from lack of use.
Pick marks can be found in the cavern, indicating that is man-made or at least man expanded.
Flemig whispers (this time quietly) to Maya, "Sorry my lady, but this particular magic spell only works on the living. I could help 4 people fall like a feather, but not the grate"
Addressing the rest of the group Flemig whispers "Someone with better perception than myself should check for hidden doors or passages in this room. And we should also find a way (if possible at all) to lock the grate behind us, in a way that only we can open if we come back this way. It wouldn't be prudent to start down a passage and leave our backs unprotected."

Maya would nod at Flemig acknowledging his explanation of his feather fall spell, keeping that detail in mind in case it comes up again in the future. Nodding again to Flemig’s suggestions. “Unfortunately I don’t believe I have a spell that could lock the grate behind us. If none of us do, would wedging a tool with the grate be an option? I have a spare hand axe from the closet.” She’d shrug. While Tanirall listens down the eastern passage, Maya would walk along the walls holding her flame up close to see if she may happen upon a hidden door or passage she may have missed earlier.
Zansnut doubted there was going to be any secret passages in a tunnel meant for air flow. At least that is the purpose he thought the tunnel had. Though if they wanted to look he wasn't going to stop them. "I'm not too concerned with sealing the entrance. If we get caught I'm telling them all of you took me hostage." He gave his fake dwarven beard another stroke for emphasis. "Besides with the rope still hanging it is obvious we came down and with how weak the grate was to begin with it wont be much of a barrier." Not wanting to appear soft he didn't tell them he would use the opportunity to sneak attack them to keep Flemig, and Khloe safe. The two he has started to view as his past and warning of the future he doesn't want to become.
ooc- Anyone near Zansnut when he was putting away his crowbar would see that he has a lantern he could use to light but he doesn't want to use his own resources if he could help it. Kind of like he is hording it from the party. To him Flemig represents the kinder version of himself when he left the halfling people and Khloe seems like the other extreme of being too careful, based on how she acted when headed to the masters house.
“Well what a mighty helpful hostage we’ll have had and the most courteous kidnappers we will have been” Khlöe was extremely amused by Zansnut’s blunt declaration. She had always respected people with a keen sense of self preservation, even if that sense landed her in hot water instead. “And if we don’t put the grate back someone could always use it as an impromptu projectile. Better have them face the grate than it falling down on us mid climb”
Flemig, silding up to Maya as she examines the walls, says "Pssst... Maya.... have you found anything? Here, let me lend you a hand." Perception check of the walls 21. "These blasted caves. Why did it have to be caves? So full of rock! And so closed in! I much prefer the open spaces of the forest myself. I mean, anything could be hiding behind these walls and we'd never know it! There could be gnarks or gremlings right through that tunnel! That doesn't happen in the forest. No place for bad things to hide there. Well, except for that one time that Zombie snuck up on me. But it was just a kid from the village playing a trick on me" Flemig sighs.
With a grin Flemig says to Maya "How about you? Spend much time in caves?"
Erevan walks over and joins Tanirall in checking the eastern passage, waiting for the others to finish their conversation until they are ready to move in whatever direction they want to go. "I am happy to head this way or try and force the grate in the floor to the next level below, but just be aware it is likely that as we go further down we will be more likely to be heard, as noise carries when you're surrounded from every direction by stone."
Besides the slight draft of air exiting up the ventilation shaft, you can hear very faintly either the dripping of water or the clinking of metal on stone, but it is to faint and jumbled to make a distinction. As lichen must have a food source, you guess that the tunnel and cave are occasionally maintained.
The tunnel proceeds 25ft before splitting off to the left.
