[OOC: Mairi speaks many a languages, and someday, many a more. Alas, Gnomish isn't one of them!]
"... Hm? O-oh! Sorry. Here." Mairi slips a dragon forward. "I tend to zone out sometimes when I find something interesting, or someones being a bit interesting. And Brigga here's been acting strangely for a while there, so..." She shrugs helplessly, and goes back to her drink. "But Volo... volo.. volo... I believe I heard of him! Awfully generous of him too to have a place like this be payment. Mind if I ask what sorta job it was?" She asked, grinning from to ear.
[OOC: My bad. I have edited the post so that it is clearer the gnomish was intended for Saralyssa.]
"We be saving his boyfriend," says Tyrus taking the gold piece. "He not be wanting to go to the guard for some reason... Ummm, that be not for publication, you understand?"
Tyrus then heads off to get Saralyssa her refill and deposits the coin he has collected for the drinks into the till.
[OOC: How are we doing, DM? If there is a large amount of money in the till, he will take some of it and put it away somewhere safe, making sure that no one is paying him too much attention while doing so.]

Briga brightens up a bit as the conversation shifts, she is unskilled at duplicity and recognizes it, and embraces a conversational turn that requires less calculated speech, or so she perceives it.
"That was quite a story! It all started with a Troll. That was how Griff and Tyrus and me met, in bar just like this. Like this, but it had a big hole leading to Undermountain, the Yawning Portal, y'know. Anyway, we were some of the handful of people who stood up to the thing, and all the overgrown mosquitoes that were chowing down on its blood," Briga says, animatedly pantomiming the fight to the threat of glassware. "Then Volo sent us out to find his missing friend, and next thing you know we're knee deep in a full on crime novel kidnapping plot, only with Kenku killers and brains with legs and weirder things than that. The sewer part was pretty smelly, but as a whole, great experience."
"I probably left some holes in that plot. There's a reason Griff and Tyrus are the charmers here in the group. Their stories make more sense." She chuckles.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
[OOC: Whoops! Did not see Brigga's thing first. Editing now.]
[Fixed]
Tyrus doesn't even need to finish his question before Mairi waving offhandedly and saying, "Yes, yes, off the record. I know how this works." She smiled teasingly at Tyrus, showing that there were no hard feelings for the request. Turning to Brigga and their dragonborn compatriot next, Mairi pushes aside her drink to make room for her leaning more forward on the bar in deep interest Brigga's tale.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa! Back up a moment... A kidnapping plot? Involving's Volo's maybe friend, maybe boyfriend? That's...." She trails off there and leans back in her seat, rubbing her chin and chewing her bottom lip in deep thought.
"It's... no... no, especially with the war going on, it'd have to be a tight ship scenario--" She muttered, then quickly aloud said, "Did you ever figure out why these Kenku and brains with legs kidnap his friend? I know Volo's has been recently starting to get attention, but in all honesty, that level of attention seems a bit much even for him."
Briga reddens a bit. "What Tyrus said, of course. Off the record, right. Gah, maybe the stoic, silent barbarian types I grew up with would have been better at this than me, after all."
There is quite a bit of gold in the till by the first couple of hours of the opening, and clearing it you get 50 gold after thinking about expenses. As Tryus starts clearing out the till, that's when the conversation is interrupted by the sound of a loud explosion, right outside the tavern.
Briga seems oddly relieved at the explosion as a distraction and relief from the social tension of subterfuge. "Thank the gods, I mean, what in the hells was that? "
She also draws her glaive from her back and follows closely behind Griff, calling out to the NPC patrons as she goes, "Stay inside and stay safe, friends, we'll check this out."
"Guess that was not a planned-for way to get more customers." Saralyssa says, seeing the tavern owners pulling weapons as they rush outside. She pushes up from her own chair and moves after them.
Stunned, Mairi isn't as quick to draw a blade, but would at least look back frantically to any window. "What in the world--?"She asked noone. And soon after, it did not mattered. Her eyes all but lit up as a spark of journalist enthusiasm propelled her into following after the others. Though along the way she hurriedly tries to pull out and strap on some kind of buckler along the way.

Tyrus's first reaction is to protect the coins he has just pulled from the till. Taking the cloth he has been using to keep his hands clean, he wraps the coins in it and then stuffs the bundle somewhere out of sight. He then checks that no one has seen him do that [OOC: If relevant, here is a Perception check 4 ; Tyrus has a suspicious mind and is concerned that this might be a distraction to possibly rob the place.].
If nothing comes of his suspicions, he will then check he has his component pouch at his side and then also head towards the door to see what is happening outside.
[OOC: LOL at the Perception check. Clearly he is not as suspicious as I am.]
Briga attempts to survey the situation outside, along with the others, trying to discern the cause of the sound and if there’s any immediate, ongoing danger.
It takes only a few seconds before the explosion is replaced by sounds of anguished cries, sobs, and moans. Stepping outside, it looks like there was an explosion. Lying on the ground just outside the tavern are a rock gnome, and three humans wearing black closely behind him, charred to a crisp. There are also other bodies of locals that got caught in the blast.
[OOC: It'll be an Arcana check to determine the cause]
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
[OOC: Tyrus is late in arriving, but he does have Expertise in Arcana, so I will make a roll for him just in case the others don't have any success: 13 ]
[OOC: DM, are the newcomers going to be added to the D&D Beyond campaign? There are still only three of us visible there.]

Whereas others might've rushed to the aid the locals, Mairi couldn't help but take a moment to fully take in the scene, and piece together at least try to peace together one mystery from the start.
The cause of the explosion is beyond her, she knows. Seeing people hurt and in danger, Briga abandons caution and immediately rushes from person to person, trying to see if there are any injured, not dead, frantically pushing aside rubble if needed to aid anyone pinned, using athletics.
She is not trained in medicine, but she is trained in perception and intuition, so while doing this she tried to observe the crowd, the nearby rooftops, etc, for anyone who might be an active threat (perception) or anyone acting oddly (intuition).
Seeing Brigga rushing to the aid of the wounded, Tyrus calls out to her, saying, "Brigga! I'll be getting me healer's kit. You bring them into the tavern and I will look to their wounds."
Then, as an afterthought, he yells, "Griffdar should see to the worst of them. Maybe he has a miracle or ten up his sleeve."
Tyrus will then hurry back inside and head for his room, which is where his healer's kit is.

The gnome and black-dressed humans are dead. You notice that one of the the male Humans. there is a tattoo of a flying snake on their neck. The gnome figure doesn't have such a tattoo, but there is no doubt is Saralyssa's, Mairi's, and Tyrus's minds, the explosion outside the tavern, right on the doorstep in fact, was a fireball spell.
In addition to the male humans as you look around you find a total of 11 dead bodies. In addition to the three looking like they were making their way to the tavern, there is also an elderly female. Two other female humans and a male-half elf in plain clothes also seemed to have been passing through and got caught in the blast, and a male and female halfling with a destroyed flute and fiddle laying next to their charred bodies.
In addition to that, the dead gnomish figure has dry waste on his boots and the lower end of his cloak, suggesting he has recently spent time in the sewers. There is also a ripped pouch with five gemstones laying in the ground near the body.
Smoke rises from where the fireball went of andf you spot Fala Lefaliir, the half-elf herbalist that owns Corellon's Crown, an Apothocary that sits on the opposite side of the road south of your tavern, who has just also come out to investigate the sound. There is also a wealthy noble who is passing through, looking shaken, and a 12-year old boy ducked behind some crates shaking and crying.
Saralyssa moves over to talk to the crying boy that moved behind the crates. "Are you ok?" She asks him as she glances around, making sure no more fireballs were getting cast on them as they all gathered at the scene.
